To gailandjack1

My mum also skated at the Blue Moon with Ethel Burns as her teacher. My mother's name was Marion Finlay, perhaps you knew her. When I was a child I often visited Mrs Burns with my mum. I have fond memories of her trying to teach me to skate when I was very young.

Cheers.
Karen Newbery

However, what I am trying to establish is what happened to the 8* children (Married/their children etc) 8 One is my grandfather who came to NZ in 1900's. I believe the eldest child Catherine East b 1876 had a number of children (no father mentioned) that all died in before 1st birthday

Thanks for those who have shared their War Bride stories! MY grandmother is still alive... she will be 93 this year. She came to the U.S. in 1945, before the war was over. She lived with my grandfather's parents here until he came home from the war. My grandmother also kept in contact with her family there, visiting every few years. Her sisters, two of them still alive as well, have been here to the US to visit as well.

My grandmother said that many of the GIs actually married Australian women but then gave fake addresses in the U.S. and the women would come here and then have no where to go. That sounds awful!

I know also that my grandmother's parents were VERY against the marriage but, I do think once they saw that the marriage was working and she had a good life here, that they made ammends.

Juliet

They were married in March 1945 and my Mom made it to the states in 1946 on the SS Mariposa. She lived the rest of her life in NJ but traveled back several times. She died in September 2010. For years she was active in a War Brides group that met across the country. Her grave stone says Australian War Bride.

Russ Cherry
Ashburn, Va

Hi found at the Qld Courts probate application for deceased Mary GOWRAN. Also found death notice in paper GOWRAN, Mary, late of Banora Point (NSW) formerly of Holland Park. Passed away on Monday, 2nd February, 2009, aged 95 years...is more but names children etc. If you check the white pages there is only on GOWRAN listed in Qld maybe worth checking.

http://www.ecourts.courts.qld.gov.au/esearching/

Cheers
Tania

Hello from Ireland
I am trying to find ancestors from Offaly (King's County, Irleand who went to Australia in the 1860's.
Over 6,500 people left Offaly in the 1860's. Most seem to have gone to Queensland but would they have moved on from there? In particular I am trying to trace a Buckley family - there was a James Buckley and his three sons - James, John and Daniel. They came from a place called Rahan, near Tullamore in County Offaly and I think they went to Australia bewteen 1862 and 1865.

The reason so many people left then (apart from the aftermath of the Famine) was they were encouraged to do so by a priest called Father Patrick Dunne. Most of the passengers would have been sponsored by the Queensland Immigration Society.
Thanking anyone who might be able to help me with this.
Geraldine
I think a nurse girl was responsible for caring for younger children. There was an article in the Brisbane Courier newspaper in Oct 1875 stating that it was common for young children in orphanages to be bound out as apprentices:

"Care should be taken not to apprentice the children too young, especially in the case of the girls, who are frequently employed as nurse-girls to carry children far too heavy for their strength."

See NLA Trove.

Scheikowski or Schatkowski

Sisters Winifred and Mary Hogan were discharged from St Vincent's Orphanage, Nudgee, as 'nurse girls' to 'Mrs Schicooski' in the Valley, Brisbane in January 1879.

BDM and electoral roll records suggest this was most likely either Scheikowski or Schatkowski.

Winifred (1866-1954) m. Samuel Johnston in Sydney in 1891, later moved to Stanthorpe. Mary (1868-1948) m. Patrick McEniery in Warwick, 1894. The girls were from Warwick, parents Matthew and Mary(nee Hutley)Hogan.

Looking for any further information on the 'Schicooski' connection.

Would also apreciate information on 'nurse girl'. In England a 'nurse child' meant 'foster child',often with payment involved. It sounds like it could also mean to help with nursing of an invalid, or helping with a young family. (Winifred was about 13, Mary 11 at the time.)

Thanks
Veronica

I would suggest contacting the Albany Creek Crematorium to check their records.

http://www.albanycreekcrem.com.au/driver.asp?page=/contact+u...

There is also an article regarding this gentleman on Trove.
Hello,

My paternal grandmother, Joycelyn Olive Smith, was born in Brisbane Australia in 1921. She's now almost 92 years old and still doing quite well. :) She met my grandfather who was an American soldier in WWII and came to live here in the U.S. in 1944.

Joyce's parents were James Smith and Clara Ophelia Magee. James was the son of Samuel Smith and Grace Smithson and Clara was the daughter of Maurice Magee and Alice Bennett.

I have quite a few records for the families so far but would love to connect with any of my long lost relatives in Australia. I did make a visit to Australia with my grandmother in 1997 and was able to meet quite a few relatives, most notable was my grandmother's first cousin, Cyril Hesse, whom I absolutely adored. He passed away in 2009.

Anyway,I just wanted to say "Hi"! and see if there were any others with these ancestors in their family trees.

Juliet
