Remittance passenger was a specific passenger so the family must have had relatives or friends already in Qld who organised & paid for their tickets :

Nominated or remittance passages - Any natural born or naturalized person residing in Queensland, desiring to provide a passage to the Colony for a friend or relative in Europe, could obtain a passage warrant from the Government on payment of the require amount. The warrant was then forwarded to the friend or relative in Europe. On presentation of the warrant, the Government representative in Europe would then arrange a passage for the emigrant.
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/sks/general/remitanc.htm

Hi Tegwen

If you enter "Qld. State Archives" into your search engine, then click onto Assisted Immigration 1848-1912 and follow the links, you will find what you are looking for.

You will find that Evan (36) a Quarryman, his wife Janet (35), their children, William (11), Winifred (7), Evan (5) and Edward (1) all from Wales left London on board the "Quetta" on 29th June, 1886 and arrived in Brisbane on 24th Aug., 1886. They were Remittance Passengers.

Then from the QLD. BDMs you will find Pierce Owen b. 1887 and Catherine Ellen b. 1889 to Parents Evan & Janet.

Do you have an approx. year they returned to the UK?

Cheers,

Alan Mac.

I think they arrived in circa 1886 they were called Evan Jones and Jennett Lloyd Jones, and had one of their children with them Edward. Then they had two children born in Australia which were called Pierce Owen Jones and Catherine Ellen Jones. Any information you can find would be great! Many thanks Tegwen x

I am looking for Charles William and William Henry Tolcher. Brothers born mid 1890s Guernsey, Channel Islands. For the 1901 census Charles was with the British Army stationed Devon. Then he seems to disappear. William and his wife Emma were in Guernsey for the 1911 census, I think they both were members of the Salvation Army. On William wedding invite he is listed as Bugler William Tolcher. Another mystery :)
Good day,

My family in in North West Wales got an assisted immigration from the UK to Queensland, aboard the RMS Quetta. I believe at one stage I found a list of their names on some sort of passenger list, but now I cannot for the life of me remember where I found it. My great great grandparents left Wales to work in the mines in Gympie, whilst there my great great grandmother gave birth to another 2 children one being my great grandmother, until finally they left and moved back to North West Wales. Does anyone know how to go about finding their names on any list, and also their names and what ship they left Australia on? If you have any ideas, that would be great!

I have let my family history research slide for a while & lost a bit when my computer crashed recently, but every now & then I go back to it. A message on these boards usually sparks my interest again. Thanks again Robyn

So if Vin was Florrie's first cousin, then Vin's parent would be a sibling of either John Carol Dealey or Lavinia Emma Taylor?

I can't see a UK marriage of a V or L Dealey to a 'Leo'.

Have you traced Florrie's mother's siblings?
Do you still have contact with your Nana's brother? I'd start by asking him to see a copy of his birth certificate, or your Nana's if you think she'll let you see it.
Also, you could look at electoral rolls & see if you can find who was living at the same address as Francis James Kenna around the time they were born.
Have you seen Francis James Kenna's death cert. as that may have some clues?
Naomi
So I have recently found out my nanas mother is not her real Mother. My (now not related) great grandmother had a son before my nana was born but he passed away the day before he turned 5. My great nana tried to kill herself, but ended up in a mental hospital. They lived in toowong, qld. My great grandfather (francis james kenna) from what I can gather had it on with the maid or housekeeper or whatever and they had two children, my nana (1939) and her brother (1937). My great nana recovered and ended up coming home, kept my nana but wouldnt keep her brother as he reminded her too much of her lost son. The name given to me by my nanas brother is Annie Myffod-howell, and she passed away around 2007, not long after my nana got to meet her. My nana is very old fashioned, and I don't want to upset her by asking her! I have searched for this woman and I can't find record of her anywhere! She later on married a man with the surname foster.

Please help! If anyone has any leads or if anyone has any advice on where I can look or anything like that please let me know!

I have a letter and some photo's with the above names on but no surname. The address on the letter dated 1956 is Rowland Terrace, Ipswich, Queensland Australia sent to my mother in England. I know Vin was a cousin to my grandmother as a photo dated 1915 says on the back: To cousin Florrie. Is it possible to find out who lived at the address and if so how do I go about it. I am assuming Leo may be short for Leopold (he was a teacher) and Vin could be short for Lavinia but this is only a guess. I don't know when they went to Australia.

Can any one help?

Hi MCM,

If you live in Brisbane andcan get to the State Archives at Runcorn the State Electoral Rolls might be able to help.

These rolls were annotated, that is if someone moved to a new Electorate, died, didn't vote or sometimes if they married the rolls were marked with the change. I have had some sussesses with these finding when and where my ancesters moved or died etc.

If you can't get to the State Archives I'll have a look at some rolls and see if I can find out anything on Margaret.

Regards
Gerry

The order waa made on the debtor's own petition. Mr. R. G. Little was appointed Official Receiver (F. J. O'Sulllvan and Ruddy, town agents for R. L.
