I am currently doing research into the family of Princess/Princey Carlo to which my daughter descends from.

Princey was born in the Eidsvold area before being moved to the Barambah/Cherbourg Settlement. A number of sources have her having children to to different partners and I have up to 5 - 6 partners whom she has had children to.

Hi just read your board I am not sure if there was a inquest into his death I remember some of James children coming to our house in Thornbury a they were older than me My mum was a only child but there was 41 cousins So Esther&Peter had 42 Grandchildren some of the children were adopted or fostered So which one of James Children is your line through.I have on my list Maude,Ruby,James,Doris,Donald I would be very happy to get copies of what you have . and I will do the same for you .It is good when you find out more about the family . In the family Bible it said Peter was born in Liverpool so I think that is true but perhaps Peter,s father was from Scotland. will get all my thing together Chat laterNancy

Actually, after doing the sums, I've been searching for Peter for a lot longer than two years... probably close to five now!

Mollipops, are you related to Peter and Esther, and if so would you also happen to have any info on the family? Anything would be gratefully received!

Nancy, they married in the house of William Turpenny according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Scotland by Banns by RK Ewing (their Minister, who has a fairly colourful history). Reg 400/1859 Ref RGD37. I have a contemporary official record of the marriage from the Tassie archives which I am more than happy to supply you a copy of (along with everything else I've got).

The marriage was held on January 24, 1859 and solemnised in the presence of William and Sarah Turpenny. I have found info (Colonial Tasmania Family Links) that Sarah's maiden name was Murray and they had a girl in 1858 and were married in 1857 but I can't find any present day Turpennys in Tassie.

They moved from Tas. to Vic. between 1861 and 1863 but I can't find any record of that. The family was based in Victoria initially but for some reason the family branched out interstate. Esther spent a period of time in WA when her daughter Margaret Alice got married there.

It seems at the time of death Peter worked for William Howard Smith and Sons

Here's the full death notice posted previously plus another I found:

Death notices:
The Age Wed March 15, P1
SINCLAIR - On the 14th March at the Melbourne Hospital. Peter, the beloved husband of Esther Sinclair of 38 Tribe St, South Melbourne, and father of Mrs Gothe, Mrs R Short, Mrs Gwynne, Mrs C Sinclair, Laura, Peter, Alick, James, Albert, Fred, late employee of William Howard Smith and Sons

The Age Wed Mar 15 back page
SINCLAIR - The friends of the late Mr Peter Sinclair are respectfully invited to follow his remains to their last resting place in the Boorondrah Cemetery, Kew. The funeral is appointed to leave his residence No. 38 Tribe St, South Melbourne, TOMORROW (Thursday) the 16th at 2 o'clock pm. R McKenzie undertaker, South and Port Melbourne.

I have the inquest on George's death, Esther's probate, Esther Jnr's probate, a few birth and death certificates in anyone in interested and I would love it if anyone could please return the favour for the ones I do not have. I wonder if there was an inquest done into Peter's death?

Nancy, do you have Peter's date of birth as 13/9/1841 in Liverpool? We may be working off the same family history another Sinclair provided me with. But it just didn't make sense that it said he was born in Liverpool when all of the records I have say that he was born in Scotland, and there were a couple of discrepencies I picked up, so I discounted this date as inaccurate.

There is someone on Mundia who has linked 'my' Peter with Esther but also with another family in England but this would also have to be wrong because the dates are concurrent, so he couldn't have been on both sides of the world at once (unless he was in shipping and sailed frequently).

I am related to Peter through James, who married Elizabeth Forfar Read. I have attached a photo of James, taken in 1919, in his Freemason uniform. Family legend has it that he was a bit of a hellraiser against the Catholics but I can't find anything on the net to back that up and I have tried getting in touch with the LOL and other proddy groups with no luck (fires, floods etc ruining records).

Anyway, I'm excited at potentially being able to clear up my puzzle so I'd love to hear back from everyone.
Cheers, Briar

Thanks to Nancy, I found this thread. I have been trying to find more info about 'my' Peter Sinclair for years! Below is the latest post I made on my quest, I hope it fits some pieces.

Peter Sinclair born Scotland, died in Melbourne, Australia

Hi, I'm hoping anyone can please help me with Peter Sinclair, who was my great-great-grandfather.

I know he was born in Scotland but I don't have any info on him until he arrived in Australia. I cannot find his shipping records, whether he was a convict or anything.

He married Esther Elizabeth ‘Annie’ Hampton (also known as Hester within parts of my family) (she was born in England, father Daniel Hampton) on Janury 24, 1859 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.

They had two children in Launceston - George Henry born June 8, 1859 and Peter John born 1861. I can't find the family's shipping record to Victoria but their next child Emma Ann was born September 9, 1863 in Emerald Hill (now South Melbourne) in Victoria.

They had nine other children after Emma Ann, with my lineage being James (my great-grandfather) who was born on August 2, 1871 and married Elizabeth Forfar Read.

Peter was listed as a labourer aged 35 from possibly Dumfriesshire (writing is very hard to read) but it definitely doesn’t say Fifeshire on Emma's birth certificate.
Peter was listed as a labourer aged 43 and born in Fifeshire, Scotland on James’ birth certificate.
Peter was listed as a labourer aged 48 from Fifeshire, Scotland on Frederick Robert Williams’ birth certificate (last child).
Peter was listed as a watchman on his son James’ marriage certificate in 1899.

I have various dates for when he could have been born that are years out so I can't just subtract the ages listed on his kid's birth certificates because that might not be accurate.

I believe Peter worked as a watchman for the railways in Melbourne.

Peter was a freemason and his son Peter John was bequeathed his lodge picture in Annie’s will. Peter John lived in Puckle St, Moonee Ponds. I'd love to hear from anyone in Peter John's lineage who would be able to supply me with a copy of that photo if they are reading this. I have contacted both the Masons in England and Scotland but they have no record of Peter Snr being a lodge member.

I have a copy of Peter’s death record. He died March 14, 1905 in hospital – Gipps Ward in the County of Bourke in Melbourne. His profession was listed as a watchman, aged 65 with cardiac failure the cause of death. He was buried on 16 March 1905 in Boorondara Cemetery. I believe it was a pauper’s grave because when I went out there it was unmarked.

I have included all the information I have in the hope someone can please help me on tracing my Sinclair lineage past Peter. I have been stuck with Peter for two years, so please help if you can, it would be much appreciated!

Hi,
I doubt mollipops is related she just replied to your 'query'
If you have sooo much information already on this family why didn't you include it in your original post?? and why did you post on a Queensland board if the family was from Tasmania and Victoria??

You will find Ancestry alot more useful/helpful if you read up on how/where to post.

Kellie

Looks like this is posted on the wrong board, as this couple married in Tasmania c1859 where they had 2 [?] children and then moved to Victoria, where a further 10 children were born in Emerald Hill (South Melbourne).

1. Unknown c1859 Tas
2. Peter Jno b. c1861 Tas, d. 1923 Melb aged 62
3. Emma Ann 1863, m. Johann Conrad GOTHE 1889, d. 1942 East Malvern aged 78
4. Anne Elizabeth 1865, m. Robt SHORT 1886, d. 16/6/1946 WA aged 81
5. Alexander Daniel 1867, m. Alice May HALLIDAY 1908, d. 1943 S Melb aged 76
6. Esther Letitia 1869, m1. Geo GWYNNE 1890 [he died 1892], m2. Jas Frank DURRANT 1913, d. 9/11/1935 Williamstown aged 66
7. James 1872, m. Elizabeth Farfar/Fofar READ 1899 [she died 1928], d. 1947 Preston aged 74
8. Euphemia Isabelle Esther TATE 1908, d. 1956 Vic aged 73

Maria's death shows father's given names as 'Peter Johnst', which makes me wonder if he is the Peter Johnson born in Tasmania in 1847 to Peter Johnston SINCLAIR and Mansell/Mancell PURTON/PERTON. It appears at least 3 other chn of this couple ended up in Victoria (William & Christiana) so it seems a possibility, but may be pure coincidence.

The Argus, Wednesday 4 November 1914
SINCLAIR. —On the 3rd November, at her residence, 38 Tribe-street, South Melbourne, Esther Elizabeth, widow of the late Peter Sinclair, loving mother of Peter, Mrs. Gothe, Mrs. Short (of W.A.), Alexander (of Queensland), Mrs. Durrant, James, Albert (of W.A.), Mrs. Sinclair (of W.A.), Mrs. De Vere, and Fred, aged 74 years. A resident of South Melbourne over 50 years.

Do you know when Peter J snr died? Must have been before 1914...Esther is interred at Melbourne General Cemetery. They may be able to help, assuming Peter is with her.

Andersen/Anderson of Miva

Appears this family (Johannes and Engery) came to Qld 1877 on Lammershagen - still further research to do there. Have traced a couple of their children: Anders married AFL Jensen 1890 (lived Miva), Carl/Charles Gustav married Emma Rose Sibley 1898 (lived Imbil), Mary married Niels Jeppson 1894 (lived Miva). Trying to trace Ida/Ada/Edith Charlotte born about 1861, Minter/Amanda Mary born about 1875. There was also another daughter who died prior to 1908.

Andersen/Anderson - Miva

Hi. Does anyone know more about Anders Peter Anderson and wife Annie Fredericka Louisa Jensen, married at 'the home of Mr Jensen', Gunalda 1890, lived Miva?

Anders (c1868 - 1913) and parents Johannes (1834-1916) and Engre Katrina Gustave (various spellings, 1831-1908) are buried at Munna Creek cemetery, Miva.

Anders and Annie had four children. August Johannes b.1891, m. Daisy Isabella Mohr 1923), lived Miva, later Maryborough. Anna Maria (Mary) b.1894, m. John Savage 1919, lived Nundah. Carl (Charles) John b.1897 m. Delia Mary Connors 1927. Ellen Louisa b.1908 ?m. David Dobson 1927.

Annie m. James Clarke (1864-1946) in 1927 and lived in South Brisbane. She died in 1960 and is buried with John Jensen at Nundah cemetery.

Anders had a brother Charles Gustave (?-1940) m. Emma Rose Sibley 1898; daughter Ivy Jessie 1900-1943 (death as Bowen).

I would love to find out more about Anders and Annie, in particular how and when they arrived in Australia. Anders' place of birth, listed on his marriage cert as Halmotve, Sweden, does not appear in any searches I have done. Annie appears to have been born in Denmark (details vary), father August Jensen. I would be interested to know more about August/where he lived (he appears to have disappeared into thin air).

I would also like to know more about the Mrs JW Watson who was invited to the funeral (can find nothing to indicate it is Ellen, although that would be logical).

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,
Yes, you are right - there is a mistake in the "Queen of the Colonies" passenger list. It lists William and Ann with children William, Charles and Ann. This should read George and Ann with children William, Charles and Ann.
The "Young Australia" agents list (no passenger list available) show William Horton and Family 2 1/2 passengers.
They only had one child when they migrated. Edwin Royston, Elizabeth's brother is believed to have travelled with them.Unfortunately we forgot to check this detail while at the Queensland State Archives.

Hiya,
Seems to be some confussling as there is HORTON family who arrived Queen of the Colonies 14 Oct 1866 consisting of William, Ann, William, Charles and Annie. (no ages stated)

I noticed Elizabeths ROYSTON's middle name was Ann (maybe it was used on passenger records)

Kellie
edit to add...Maybe William was mistranscribed and it is supposed to be George?

William Horton

From Ann Horton’s memoirs it appears William Horton arrived in Brisbane in 1866 having left England 6 weeks (not 6 months) before Ann & George Horton who sailed on the “Queen of the Colonies”.

Archive records for William Horton
An immigration agents record shows a William Horton and family of 2 ½ passengers arriving on the “Young Australia” Sailed from England 8.6.1866 Arrived Brisbane 13.9.1866. – No passenger list is available for this ship.
At this time William and Elizabeth had one child – Charles.
The 1980 Roll shows him as a resident of the 'Pioneer Home', Bundaberg, presumably an old age 'nursing care' home.

Gilbert is probably a long-lost member of our family. Can anyone suggest how we might determine where and when Gilbert died; where his remains were buried; and facts associated with his birth date and place; so that we can decide whether this is 'our' Gilbert or not?

Bruce

Hello Helen - Many thanks for this information. 'Our' Gilbert was born in 1902, so it's looking more likely that the Pioneer Home resident was indeed 'ours'.

Cheers,

B.

Thanks so much for this reply. It is beginning to seem that Charles must be the son mentioned in the newspaper. I know that a William Butterfield Algeo and Mary Ann Lockhart Algeo had a son named Charles Lockhart Algeo. What I find so odd, though, is that on the marriage license of this couple, William's parents are a different pair to those mentioned on the QLD BMD record for William (he is there under ALGER -- it's a difficult name to get right on records). The names given on the death certfificate are quite plausible names for this family -- but they completely contradict the other set.

Well, perhaps when we actually get the death certficate, we will learn a bit more.

I'm actually surprised he's not buried in Gin Gin, because he's not buried next to Mary Ann Algeo, Charles Lockhart Algeo's mother.

Hi aagin Santa,

I guess if W B Algeo was the first child of Robert and Ann, born 1801-1802, it's probable that he married, had three children in quick succession, and was a widower by 1825...

Do you have any earlier documentation which includes his signature, which you could compare with that on the 1841 marriage certificate to Elizabeth Vaughan?

William's death certificate should hopefully clear up a few questions depending, of course, on the accuracy of the knowledge of the informant, presumably the son in whose home he died.

If one and the same person, it was not unusual for an 'older' groom to lower his age when marrying a younger bride, and again, in his later years, his age (at least in the newspaper death notice) has been 'upped' several years.

Harriet's death was pre-1856 civil registration, so, disappointingly, will most likely consist of a burial transcription, with no info re birthplace or marriage.

In the meantime, while awaiting the certificates, it might be an idea to post a message on the New South Wales board, outlining what you have already unearthed, in the hope that someone there can dig up some more information on his time in that state.

Cheers, Anne

BTW, are you aware of New South Wales Transcription Agents?
Google 'New South Wales Transcription Agents' for a less expensive alternative to the NSW Registry of BDM certificate.

The transcription agent makes a full (or partial, depending on choice) written (typed) copy of the information on the original certificate.
Oh, you lovely people. Such a wealth of information. This is a relatively long response, but I want to share with you what I know and don't know, so you can see why I am so concerned as to who this son is. It is a timeline of what I know about William Butterfield Algeo (Alger, Algee, etc.)

1801: Marriage in Dublin of Robert Newcomen Algeo and Ann Butterfield.

1816: This is the year that the William Butterfield Algeo who married Mary Ann Lockhart Logan in 1856 in Manning, NSW, Australia, says he was born – giving his age as 40. His parents are Ann Butterfield and Robert Newcomen Algeo. Robert is part of an Algeo family in Leitrim, Ireland.

1825, November: Date of letter written by William B. Algeo, petitioning for land in Upper Canada (now Simcoe County, Ontario. In the letter he states that he a surgeon, a widower with three children, and the son of Robert N. Algeo, of Leitrim, and that he arrived in Canada in July.

1831, February: William Butterfield Algeo marries Elizabeth Vaughan in London, at St. Marylebone. Entry in parish register says that he is a bachelor. Search for original marriage license commissioned.

1835: William Butterfield is first postmaster of Oro (later Edgar) Post Office, in Simcoe County. Also appears to have been granted more land.

1839, July: The Colonist, published in Australia July 31, 1839, notes the arrival on July 26 of the ship Heber, Thomas (captain) in Sydney, with cabin passengers including “Mr. and Mrs. Algeo and two children” also a Mister J. Algeo.

1841: Charles N. (or H.) Algeo born to William Butterfield Algeo and Harriet – two entries in birth register, which need to be checked out: Question: if this is the same William Butterfield Algeo who married Elizabeth Vaughan, what happened to Elizabeth? Did she die in Canada, and William married Harriet there? Did she accompany him to Australia, die soon thereafter and William then married Harriet? Harriet’s death certificate has been sent for, so can find out where she was born.

1843, June: Notice of bankruptcy of William Butterfield Algeo, in Sydney. He is stated to be a settler in Parramatta. Sydney Morning Herald Thursday, 8 June 1843.

1847:	Harriet Algeo (Algee in records) dies in Red Fern, Sydney, at age 28, wife of William Butterfield Algeo, Esq.

1851: Bankruptcy of William Butterfield Algeo. In gaol in Darlington.

1856:	William Butterfield Algeo married Mary Ann Lockhart Logan, in Manning, NSW, Australia. He states on his marriage license that he is “40” and that his father is Robert Newcomen Algeo, Lt. Col. In the “Portuguese Service” and mother is Ann Butterfield. Note, though that he cannot have been born in 1816, as this implies, if he is the son of Robert Newcomen Algeo, and was in Canada in 1825 with three children.

1886, Jan. 20: William Butterfield Algeo dies at home of his son in The Grange, Gin Gin, Queensland. He is stated to be 90 years of age. We have ordered his death certificate. The newspaper notice is given in the Australian Town and Country Journal of 8 May 1886. Further information online is that he is the son of William Butterfield Algeo and Elizabeth Butterfield. (Vaughan)? Question: Is it possible that he was actually 50 instead of 90, and born in 1836? That would fit with marriage of W.B. Algeo and Elizabeth Vaughan. But then, who is this son, and to whom was this WB Algeo married?

1889:	Death of Mary Ann Algeo, nee Lockhart. William Butterfield Algeo is not buried with her, possibly suggesting he died in Queensland in 1886 and is buried there.

I am wondering of the Robert Newcomen Algeo in the land grant is actually a son of William Butterfield Algeo, and may even be the son at whose home he died, but I don't know how close Bundareg is to Gin Gin.

Altogether, the William Butterfield Algeo(s) had a number of children -- three from his first marriage, one with Harriet, and 3 more from marriage to Mary Ann Lockhart Logan.

So you can see why I an going around in circles on this man, or men -- there have to be two of them, but don't know which marriage, or children, or death, goes with which.

thanks for listening!
