Hi,
I was wondering if Maria Elizabeth Hooper was by any chance of aboriginal or torres strait islander descent, or perhaps her husband John Henry Shetlat. I have their parents etc.. and their children. At least one of their (Maria and John's) children:-Adelaide seems to be of indigenous appearance, and this carried on to her children.I am stuck as to where the colouring comes from?

The death notice describes Phyllis as Mrs W A HODGE so I wonder if he name was actually William Alfred HODGE and his son was named after him.

The son Wm Alfred HODGE's digitised Naval record gives his address at discharge. I am familiar with the area where he lived. He was known as Bill and worked as a shearer although his electoral roll listing gives his occupation as farmer.

Robert william thomas married 2 McLaran sisters - Laura Annie and she passed away and he married Jean McLaran

I have on my tree that Joyce Isabel Clara thomas was born on 30 Jan 1918 - do not know if she married in Australia - I did see that someone had her over in the USA at one stage.

the name McLaran has been incorrect for quite some time - it was McLeoran on the passenger list coming out. Our family have always tried to adhere to the AN at the end of the surname.

No need to go to the SLSA. You can search for the newspaper items on the TROVE website and print from there.

Certificates are very expensive in South Australia and you can purchase transcriptions from the South Australian Genealogy Society or Graham Jaunay. Google for their websites. Transcriptions are all you need for family history.

I would suggest that the details of the mother on Phyllis May's birth certificate are not accurate. Perhaps the father's name was TRELOAR.

The clue to her mother's true identity is in the death notice

[Before Mr. W. Hall.] John Henry Shetlat, of West Adelaide, labourer, was charged on the information Of James Graham with having, on January 6, unlawfully assaulted him. Mr. E. J. Hogan appeared for informant. Evidence was given that the alleged assault took place it the East-End Market Defendant, a cripple, was sitting on a trolley and struck Graham on the left temple with bis crutch. Defendant was ordered to pay £5, including costs. He was bound over to keep the peace for six months in his own surety of £20. A counter-information against Graham, for having used insulting Words when speaking to Shetlat in front of the Empire Theatre, Grote street, on December 18, was dismissed, with £1 11/ costs against Shetlet.

In a violent collision between his motor cycle and a motor car at the corner of East and Fourth Streets, Brompton, on Saturday night,John Shetlat, 66yrs, of Railway Terrace, Draper, had his right leg torn off at the knee. He was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and last night his condition was reported to be critical.

Hope you get this. Just looking into my partner's family.

His Dad is Brian Newland Moir whose mother was Gladys Sophie Field. Her father was Henry Newland Field, who was the son of Henry Field. Henry Field married Sophie Newland who was the daughter of Ridgeway William Newland.

Brian was raised on a farm in Western Australia called Marra, the name of the farm of Henry Field and Sophie in NSW where they had eight children.

They were very close to Sir Henry Newland who was a prominent surgeon. He was the son of Simpson Newland, who was Ridgeways' son too. So Simpson and Sophie were brother and sister.

Hi Dawn,

The Victory family were from Co Westmeath. The 'Register of Emigrant Laborers applied for free passage to South Australia' gives address as 'Castleton, Castlepollard'.

Baptism records of four of the five children (from 1820 to 1832) have been found in the Castlepollard Catholic Parish registers.

I believe the Kiernan/Kearnan family were from the same place (they also applied to emigrate at the same time and have the same address in the 'register of emigrant laborers...').

I only have the Kearnan's coming from County Cork (nothing more specific than that). Their name is spelt Kiernan on the passenger list, but its incorrect and was spelt Kearnan - a descendant was Fr Francis Kearnan who founded Kearnan College in WA.

I also dont have a specific location for Thomas Evans and his wife Elizabeth (nee Fitzgerald) either. They arrived at least with a daughter Julia.

I know a lot of these early settlers were sponsored by SA residents and some came from the same parish - I would love any more info on where yours came from, so I can maybe be more specific in my search.

Hi Pamela, Embracing New Horizon's was published in 1981. You can't buy it anymore! I was in the process of getting some copies from Mary Reece husband Phillip last year, but unfortunately he passed away before I could get my hands on them. Apparently he had several left over copies from when they were made. I don't know what his family may have done with them, or a contact for them!

Thanks for all your help, I did find ages ago a article on Trove for when Mother Catherine died and it stated: Hodges-On the 1st November at Sussex Street, Lower North Adelaide, Catherine. relic of the late Robert Hodges, aged 77.

That is all I have found on her and nothing else and it's frustrating me to no end lol.

So would that mean from what you've told me that Catherine, William and Robert were all born in New Zealand? As I've also found out that Robert Jnr came over here when he was about 3 yrs old and I think that's what was throwing me off...

Cally, BISA has a glaring error with Alfred HODGES and family, and I chose not to post those details in my earlier reply to Linda.

State Records SA assisted immigration index do not name a son Robert.
Hodges 1852 Alfred 52/2 (2) = father and son
Hodges 1852 Eleanor 52/2
Hodges 1852 Thomas 52/2

I have traced the above family back to the UK looking for a son Robert born 1841, and Eleanor was married previously to James DAY and had two sons (b.09/08/1840 d.1841 and b.19/03/1842) and the second was Thomas. Alfred and Eleanor/Ellen married in 1848 and had son Alfred b.03/07/1849.

I looked for a passenger list for the vessel “Adelaide” and found this info but the link to the passenger list no longer exists. “1852 ADELAIDE from Plymouth 8 - 11 1850 via New Zealand - Captain Stephens, arrived Port Adelaide on 31-01-1852 “ Whether they came from Plymouth on this vessel or just from NZ is unknown. The list may be on somewhere else online or may be on trove newspaper listings.

Considering Robert was 11 years old when he arrived in Au, then I assume that he married in Australia. Maybe someone can search the SA marriage records for you to find the maiden name of his wife.

I looked for HODGE/HODGES births in NZ and found only three with parents named Robert and Catherine. But no marriage for this couple in NZ, or anywhere in Australia.

The birth years are 'out' by just one year for the children Catherine and Robert.

NZ certificates can be ordered online

If Catherine Gertrude had a birthdate later than 24 July then she could have been in her 28th year meaning she was born in 1875????

A Robert HODGE from Limerick Ireland emigrated to NZ in 1875 but no mention of a wife. A passenger list named cabin passengers but not the several hundred immigrants (in steerage as was the custom?) so could not look for Catherine.

Catherine Gertrude being the oldest died at 27 yrs of age, John died at 1 and Mary Agnes died at 4 of Diphtheria, Robert Jnr died when he was 60 and they were the only children. Robert and Mary Anne Strachan's marriage certificate has only Mary Anne's brother as a witness and he was 25 and she was 22 when they got married. What I'm trying to find is Robert Jnr's Mother K/Catherine all I know about her is she died in 1921 and that's all I've found on her...

At 1909 there is only Robert jnr alive from your list of children so there might be other children to find. Catherine would be 32 at birth of Catherine Gertrude 1876, which would be older for a first child.

If this is your Robert jnr, do you have marriage certificate for -

STRACHAN Mary Ann Catherine

Witnesses might include a sibling.

The death notice for Robert 1908 has WA papers please copy.

I have again checked on Ancestry for birth of joseph manson and only find 2 in ireland, both born 1864. They are probably the same person from two different sources. Father robert manson.

I have never been able to find shipping to South Australia between 1861 and 1871 which was the time Joseph Manson left Orkney for Australia so will have to do some more research

I'm looking for ANY information on my 3x Great Grandparents please.
Robert Hodges 1841-1908,
K/Catherine ? 1844-1921.
They had 4 children,

Catherine Gertrude Hodges 1876-1903,
Robert Lawrence Hodges (2x GG) 1878-1938,
John Hodges 1882-1883 and
Mary Agnes Hodges 1885-1889

I know that they lived in Sussex Street, North Adelaide when the children died except for Robert. I also know that Robert Snr is buried with his children in West Terrace Cemetery in the Catholic Section but K/Catherine is buried in the Catholic Section in a unmarked grave?

Would like to get K/Catherine's maiden name if possible and find out WHY she's not buried with her family???
I also can't seem to find where any of the children were born as it's rumored that Robert Jnr was born in Napier New Zealand or Tuekamarie New Zealand but can't seem to find anything to support this...

Would also like to know where they also came from.

I have phyllis death certificate and birth certificate I wonder why two mothers are names not one

Her death certificate only says how many children 3 boys and I girl died which is what she died from incomplete miscarriage cause of death
I think I need to find date of birth for her parents

A William Alfred HODGE died in South Australia in 1994. Seems he was known as Billy or Cooch.

Not sure if same one...you may be able to submit a research request here www.genealogysa.org.au/ but I think they charge a fee.

This must be his enlistment - next of kin Thomas is shown as his brother:
