Surnames: Bell Richardson
Hi,

Tracing my great grand aunt Sarah Richardson's husband, William Bell, on my late mothers side, who she married, in Victoria in 1867. From an unconfirmed listing on another Ancestry.com listing, he may possibly have been born as William Norman Bell.

I know Sarah Richardson was born in Alston, Cumberland, UK., in 1850 to John Richardson, a lead miner, and his wife Hannah Allison. Sarah remarried Joseph Race in 1877 in Victoria, and sadly died the same year in Bairnsdale Vic. Her whole family, including brother Emerson, came to Australia from the UK, on board the HMAS Great Britain in 1862, which is most likely where their second son William Emerson Bell, got his middle name from, probably per his grandmothers family branch line.

Unfortunatley, all I have been able to confirm re William Bell whatsoever, is where William and wife Sarah were living in the late 1860s, being at Cambrian Hill on the goldfields near Ballarat where their first son John Joseph Bell was born in 1868. Two year later William Emerson Bell was born at Campbells Creek, also close to Ballarat Vic.
I do realise it may be a bit presumptious, however its possibly more than just coincidental, that Sarah Richardson's family were miners from Alston near Weardale in Cumberland UK, and a William Bell bought shares in 1867 in the Alston and Weardale Gold Mine, registered at Cambrian Hill Ballarat, per attached newspaper clipping.

Update 19 Jan
I have just located a ballarat site which lists Mining accidents, that states not one, but two William Bells passed away, both at Sebastapol, one on 12 Dec 1869, and the other on 1 Apr 1870, however I am unable to locate a death record, on either of these Wm Bells.

It is highly likely either of these two miners, was Sarah Richardsons first husband.

Would really appreciate any info anyone may have on how to procure confirmation on the right William Bell.

Regards with thanks
