When entering Sandhurst as the place of birth or death for your ancestors, you might like to put (Bendigo) after as there is now a place in Victoria 37km south-east of Melbourne in the LGA City of Frankston. In years to come there maybe great confusion between the two places.

Thanks, Tania. Mary Ann must have been my Great Grandmother's half sister - her brother Robert made similar claims about their great grandmother being a niece of Cook, so i guess i'll have to find out whether she married a man named "Carne". I remember reading somewhere that Admiral Saunders was childless, so i'm not sure about that one...
It's a shame that my family never seemed to be the one to inherit 'historical relics', as i would have loved to see these.

The owners of public trees either have the certificate or personal knowledge of his birth,so contact with them may be fruitful. The other option is that John's birth was registered but is not entered on index, contact with Victorian BMD would clear that up.

Looks like a generation slip here,Thomas was 60 when John was born,Isabel was 66!!John appears to have been raised by his grandparents so using their names in birth search will scramble results.
Did children from previous marriage of Isabel take the name Stephenson?By 1879, either of those girls may have had a child old enough to bear John.Best to find out who has John's birth certificate and get a copy of same.

Does anyone have information regarding my grandfather, Leslie Maxwell STEPHENSON. I cannot find any record of his birth. I have his Marriage Certificate No 87161 which shows he was married to my Grandmother (Georgina Ah Wan)in Jundah, Queensland on 27 January 1913. On that document he gave his name as John Leslie Maxwell STEPHENSON, his birthplace as Bendigo in Victoria, his age as 33 years and his parents as Thomas Stephenson and Isabel McPherson.

Pure luck, found Constance Halveston DEAN's marriage to Thos Jas TOPP in 1914 (reg 7794). Do you have this certificate?

Chn born in Mildura:
Alma Jean 1914
Gordon Floyd 1917
Doris Melva Annie 1919
Lorna Millicent b. c1923, d. 1926 aged 3

Thos Jas died in 1970 aged 84, reg 27536.

Maybe...birth for a Constance HALVORSTONE in 1895 (reg 4819) to Hy Emmel & Eliz nee COLLINS, in Landsborough, Vic.

Aha! There is a death in Mildura for an Elizabeth MARTIN in 1951 aged 93, daughter of Jas COLLINS & Louisa DICKET (reg 23901). Birth of Louisa COLLINS to Jas & Louisa nee DICKETT in Ararat in 1858 (reg 13178).

Elizabeth COLLINS (b. Ararat) married to Michael DEAN (b. Portland) in 1877 (reg 2817). They had 9 chn in and around Landsborough 1878-87. (Let me know if you'd like details of these children - appear to be half-siblings of Constance).

Death of a Michael DEAN in Stawell, aged 42, in 1890, son of Geo & Ellen nee CAHILL (reg 4843).

Then a marriage for Elizabeth DEAN to Alex MARTIN in 1901 (reg 386).

No trace of Hy HALVORSTONE...but does explain why that is her middle name and she was known by surname DEAN. Seems like a good match to me...

Ah at least we know what happened to Henry! This appears to also mention Constance's birth ('false registration') - which I take to mean he was not married to Elizabeth. And look at the name of his co-accused - his 'stepson'! :(

The Horsham Times, Friday 25 October 1895
The Stawell Assizes
Sentencing the Prisoners
Henry Emile Halverstone, who pleaded guilty to four count of sheep stealing at Landsborough ; four years imprisonment. To a charge of perjury preferred against the same prisoner, the offence being involved in the the false registration of the birth of a child, he had also pleaded guilty. On this he was sentenced to two week's imprisonment. James Dean, a lad, charged with sheep stealing in conjunction with Halverstone, who had also pleaded guilty, was ordered to be sent to the reformatory.

Researching Annie Elizabeth Angwin & John Mitchell. Annie died in NSW in 1948 and she was 73 giving a year of birth as circa 1875 and birthplace of Hawthorn. Her parents are listed as John Angwin, labourer and Elizabeth Ann Williams.
She supposedly married John Mitchell at Hawthorn when she was 20 ie c 1895 however her only child Leslie Justice Mitchell appears to have been born in 1896 at Carlton and registered as Leslie Jestes Angwin
There are a significant number of Angwins around Bendigo and a number of those are named Justus, so there is probably a connection there are also a number of John Angwins but none appear to be the correct one. Trove had an Annie Elizabeth Angwin daughter of John Angwin marrying in 1875 but the husband and generations don’t match a marriage in 1895.
I have been unable to find any trace of a marriage between John Mitchell and Annie Elizabeth Angwin nor have I been successful in tracing the birth of Annie Elizabeth Angwin. Can anyone help or offer suggestions of where else to look?
Also posted on the Victoria - General board. TIA

Hi Again

Captain Cooks family tree. From what I read only one of his sisters line produce children who went on to produce more children and that was Margaret COOK b:1742 who married George FLECK. Now interestingly I noted you mentioned the surname CARTER - one of Margaret COOK and George FLECK's daughters Grace FLECK b: 1770 (who would have been Cook's niece) married a John CARTER and they had a number of daughters if you could find one that possibly married a SAUNDERS then you may find your connection.
But like all things it maybe just a family myth.

Below is a link to Captain Cook's family tree.

http://www.captcook-ne.co.uk/ccne/familytree.htm

Cheers
Tania

An article in the newspaper about Henry's daughter Mary Ann mentioned in his Will - talks about his arrival in Australia being in SA and then going to Victoria. From this article I have also provided a possible link to the date and ship he arrived on.

The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1931 - 1954) Previous issue Wednesday 27 January 1937

Descended From Captain Cook
Mrs. M. A. Trewren, of First avenue, Royston Park, claims to be a collateral descendant of Captain Cook, the dis- coverer of Australia. Her great grand-
mother was a niece of the navigator. Mrs. Trewren's father, through whom she claims descent, came to South Aus tralia in 1839, but stayed for only four years. He settled in Victoria, and Mrs. Trewren was born there. She married 47 years ago, and has since lived in Adelaide. At her home Mrs. Trewren has a number of historical relics, including etchings of Captain Cook and Admiral Sir Charles Saunders, a direct ancestor. She also has a remarkable parchment map in the form of a sphere, which can be inflated. The map was drawn by her father, Mr. H. Saunders at a Bristol Academy at the age of 14. The cartography is excellent, and the colors look as if they had been used only a year or so ago.

This might be his arrival.
South Australian Passenger Lists
Shipping arrivals and immigration 1803 to 1854+
Barry Leadbeater

SAUNDERS Henry arrived in SA 1839-07-24 aboard William (2) from Launceston [Source:23(1/2),38]

Cheers
Tania

Hi Kellie.
I had not included his age and parents because i am not entirely sure that they are correct. I cannot find any other reference to his mother being Ann Carne, and i'm sure my grandmother made mention of there being a Carter instead. I dont have actual marriage certificates but ancestry.com references for both of his marriages (both Elizabeth and my GG-grandmother Catharine Paull). I literally know nothing of this man other than what i stated, which is why i'm looking for help.

Supposedly, he was the nth-great grand nephew of James Cook, but i'm not sure - i'm looking to see if there's any weight to this theory before i reject it.

Thanks,
Elise

Hi mollipops1

The Mary Hilda MARTIN midwife if correct would have been Archibald's daughter not his wife - so she would have been single at time in 1950 as she didn't marry until 1952. Winifred Katherine was Archibald's wife. Mary Hilda MARTIN married Archibald Frank CLOSE. But as you point out it is possible to be another Mary Hilda MARTIN.

Cheers

Great stuff, Tania! Good find on Ryersons, death notices may lead to living descendants!

The only bit I think may be in dispute is the SA midwife - I am pretty sure nurses (and teachers) back in the day had to be single women - in any case, there was a Mary Hilda MARTIN born in 1924 in Clare district of SA who I think is most likely this woman; seems more the case that Archibald & Mary stayed in NSW ;)

Aha! Just found this:

The Argus, Friday 2 January 1942
MARRIAGE
CLOSE—MARTIN.—Mary, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Martin, Chipping, Ringwood, to Frank Close, of Rawong, Malaya, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Close, Bellvue Hill, Sydney.

I suspect this may be his WWII enlistment, with wife Mary as his next of kin:
CLOSE FRANK ARCHIBALD : Service Number - NX173622 : Date of birth - 16 Jun 1914 : Place of birth - SYDNEY NSW : Place of enlistment - Unknown : Next of Kin - CLOSE MARY

I think his father is most likely Archibald Freebairn CLOSE who died in July 1950 in Sans Souci NSW, as husband of Clare and father of Frank and Ian.

Oh my!! You guys are wonderful! Louisa Ward Martin was my grandmother's aunt! I would love to know how exactly to get this document for my records. Where do I have to go to download this? I wonder if this Mary is still alive??

I'm thrilled to know that Archibald Arena Martin knew his mother's name. Sometimes that info gets lost when the mother dies when the child is young (he was 6 years old). I would love to know if there area any stories that were passed down.

Thanks so much! If you find more, I'd love to see it!!

KathyInIllinois
