I am very interested in locating any descendants of
Arthur JOSE and his wife Mary GRAY - publicans in South Australia.
As well as descendants of a Rebecca ROBERTSON (who was only related by marriage of a JOSE daughter who married her brother)
Arthur JOSE and his wife Mary GRAY were a fairly enterprising pair with descendants turning up in Victoria, South Australia and beyond so far.
I have found 12 children born to Arthur JOSE and his wife Mary GRAY so far :
starting with Julia Ann JOSE born 1857 who married Edwin HUFFA, followed by :
Arthur John JOSE who married Ellen FURLER
Alfred JOSE who married Margaret KIRK
Mary Jane JOSE who died a spinster this century
Ellen JOSE who died a spinster this century
Louise JOSE who may have died a spinster this century
Emma JOSE who married Gregory ROBERTSON - He was born 1858 Inverness Scotland - a son of Alexander ROBERTSON
Frederick JOSE who died as an infant
Edward JOSE who died as a young child
Albert JOSE who may have been a bachelor all his life when he died this century (I say may because he died in Parkside Mental Hospital and just because the authorities in Parkside called someone a bachelor on a death certificate - I have seen situations where Parkside Mental Hospital records incorrectly recorded a man as a bachelor when really he was still married but estranged from the wife. Ditto I have seen where they have said the man had no issue - yet he did have acknowledged issue. It is easy to see how close family contact may cease with all the attitudes in past times and prejudice that existed re a mental illness - DEATH certificates are only as good as the information supplied )
Finally there is the last child I found born to Arthur JOSE and his wife Mary GRAY, namely : Henrietta JOSE born 1879 - no further info located yet for her
I have more info on the JOSE descendants of above but would also like to locate more on the sister of the above Gregory ROBERTSON. This sister of Gregory was called Rebecca ROBERTSON. She arrived in Australia around the same time as her brother Gregory on the ship called "Oakland" in 1879. I would really like to find her descendants too. There was a Rebecca ROBERTSON (sometimes called Robinson & other variations) who had issue with John SUMNER but she was, I have been told, an Aboriginal woman at Point McLeay mission in South Australia and not a Scottish emigrant to Australia. So the real Rebecca ROBERTSON from Inverness Scotland disappeared off the face of the earth.
If the JOSE family above relates to your JOSE family then please do contact me.
Thanks
Suzanne
