Alexander McDonald born in Quebec in 1838 and emigrated to Bethanga Australia around 1853. He came in search of gold but ended as a blacksmith and baker. He married an Irish immigrant Jane Lyness. Alexander was the son of Daniel McDonald and Mary Gunnas. Daniel had come to Canada with his parents in the early 1800s. Daniel's father, James was a private soldier in Scotland but lived in Edinburgh.
