April 1930

Alfred Chantel Mitchell, aged 33
years, of Noojee, was then charged
with stealing three sheep, the pro
perty of Percy George Green, be
tween February 13th and March 13th,
at N?ooje. The accused pleaded
guilty.
Evidence was given by Constable
Brown, of Noojee, that le knew the
accused, who was a good worker but
was addicted to drink. Mitchell had
a wife and family of seven children,
all under 12 years of age.
His· Honor, addressing Mitchell,
said that he had committed a very
serious offence. It was regarded as
a particularly serious one, because it
was so difficult of detection. In the
statement which lMitchell had writ
ten to the Court, he had admitted
that drink was the cause of his ac
tion. In view of the accused's
previous good character, he would
sentence Mitchell to 18 months im
prisonment, with hard labor, but
would suspend the sentence upon the
accused undertaking to abstain from
intoxicating drink for a period of
three years. He would remain un
der a bond of £10 to observe this
stipulation.
