I am
Lea, the
Whippy from
England. Here we have Whippy's and Whippey's. Without concrete proof it's hard to say but, both surnames originate from the same districts and villages in
England. They are mainly
Bristol,
Wells, Clutton, Gloucester, and Bedminster(all in the South West of
England). Whilst researching the family here, I have come across ancestors of mine who were registered
Whippy at birth,
Whippey at marriage and even cases of Wippy,
Whippie, and Wippie. So here at least we do have the 2 versions of the surname used in conjunction. I have a distant relative in
England, Ken Perry who mother was a
Whippy, and is extremely kind to go once a year to the
Parish Churches in these areas to research further. Sadly many of the old records are not available having been lost or destroyed over the years. What we think we do know is James
Whippy who arrived in Nantucket in 1727 was the son of Richard and Martha
Whippy and christened in Saint Martin in the
Fields London on November 18 1683. We loosely base this on the facts that we cannot find ahrdly another
Whippy in
England during this period and it seems there were so few Whippys at the time. Actually all the Whippy's in
England today descend from John
Whippy 1773 and Mary
Vaughan 1773,both Bedminster born, which is quite amazing. When I have time I shall have to try and include all the Whippeys too, as I know for sure there will be a great connection. If anybody is interested I have a webpage on Tribalpages where I have published some of my findings. Please go there and look up
Whippy then you will be able to contact me.
Please reply if I can be of help,
Lea
