I am trying to locate more information and the burial place of Robert (Bob) Genge b 1919. Robert was a New Zealander who lived with his parents Louis (Lewis) Genge and Charlotte Genge (nee Johnson) he became a Major in the Fijian Army. I understand that he was in Fiji from at least 1947 when his daughter Christine Vanessa Genge was born, He was chosen by Ratu Sir Lala Sukana to recruit and train the 1st Fiji Infantry Regiment and was posted to Malaya with the battalion.
In Feb 1955 Bob was promoted to Major and named as 2 I/C of the battalion elect under Col. Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau.
Bob was ambushed and killed in action at Kluang, Malaya on 21st Feb 1955. He was buried with full military honours in the Pasir Panjang Military in 1993. Now the confusing part. I have information that ashes of all those that fell in Malaya were returned to Fiji for re-burial during the Malaya Memorial Ceremony due to the efforts of Brigadair Ian Thorpe. Commanding Officer of the Fiji Military Forces.
I cant find any mention of him in the Malayan/Singapore Military Cemeteries and he is not listed on the Commonwealth War Graves site in Fiji.
How can I search other Fiji cemeteries and look for other records. Is there somewhere I can contact with regards to his Fijian Army service ?? Lots of questions, hoping someone can help...Murray Thomson
