We are related by marriage and Richard has been difficult to track down.
The Keans were a well known family in Campbell Town, Tasmania. Family stories (which have been generally accurate with other family members) accuse him of "blackbirding", and I am hoping to find evidence for or against this.

Hi Geoff,

In the Stewart's hand book of the Pacific islands by Percy Allen (published in 1922) it lists Joseph Stephen Kean and
William Andrew Kean as residents of Suva in Fiji.

I couldn't tell from your profile, but if you're not a direct descendant of Richard - there are a few Kean's still in Fiji.

My family oral history is that my great grandfather changed our surname from JENSEN to STEWART.

I am trying to make a connection between a John STEWART (who was in Fiji between 1914-1922) and John JENSEN b. 1891 Marrickville, New South Wales, Australia.

The information I have on John STEWART from his marriage certificate to Filomena RODAN in 1918 in Suva, Fiji is that he was born in Sydney and was 28 in 1918, which means he would have been born around 1890 or 1891. His father was Peter STEWART who was a carner (farmer) and his was mother was listed only as BERTELSEN.

The only record I can find of a John STEWART or John JENSEN born in New South Wales that matches the details of John STEWART from his marriage certificate is of John JENSEN b. 1891 Marrickville, NSW, Australia.

John JENSEN's parents were Simon Peter JENSEN and Anne Marie BERTELSEN who were married in 1888 in Queensland, Australia. They also had a daughter, Mary Magdalene JENSEN b. 1890 who was born in Qld.

Any information would be appreciated.

Do you mean TONGA- the country, as the birthplace? About when?
The Fiji Registrar of Births etc should have a registration of the death, if he died in Fiji.
They have a website http://www.bdm.gov.fj/index.htm through which you could apply for information.

I am a Terry living in Fiji!! There isnt much that i know about the first terrys that came here except that they were from Australia and he ran away with his kids nanny! My grandfather is deceased. His name was Royden Terry and was part tongan and part white.

You can look at www.familysearch.org and write in the person's name plus the country, but this is only an index.

To see and print out the actual registrations, you need to order a copy of the appropriate Fiji registration microfilm. These can be ordered at Mormon family History Centres.

The list of the available microfilms is in the Library Catalog section on www.familysearch.org.Write in "Fiji", then click on civil registrations. A list of all the film numbers will appear. Choose and note the call numbers of the ones you want. Take the numbers to a Family History Centre (LDS)and order them in. When they arrive, read the film, find the entry, and print it out, or otherwise copy it.

Pacific help sought in identifying WWII photos

An Australian archivist is hoping Pacific islands communities may be able to help add to an archive she is compiling of a New Zealand Air Force flying boat squadron which operated in the Pacific in WWII.

Jenny Scott is the daughter of Flight Lieutenant Alistair Scott, the adjutant of the RNZAF's number 6 Squadron, which flew long-range missions from Fiji, Tonga and Solomon Islands. Ms Scott has put photos collected by her father of the squadron's experiences up on the internet. She's hoping
older people in the Pacific may be able to identify some of the people in the photos.

Hi I'm doing this for a neighbour who doesn't have a computer. Looking for her ancestor Joseph Vincent Terry, apparently the first white settler in Fiji, though I'm not sure of that. He was born in Tasmania, and married there to an Ellen, then 2 years later he married a Mary Ann O'Connor, then she divorced him in 1861 but had 5 children to him, then he nicked off to Fiji with the kids Nanny and about 4 or 5 kids, leaving 2 behind a boy and girl. Basically I want to know what happened to him in Fiji, did he have more kids, where did he die, where is he buried and did he leave a will? Not much I know. Kindest Regards, Jo.

Francis Maitland Woods was married to my husband's unknown grandmother and we were hoping to connect with any possible descendents but have not had any luck at this stage.

I have recently been contacted by a relative of yours in Australia. She is the descendent of George Miller, Henry/Anare Miller's brother, born in Tonga in 1836.
He apparently went to Victoria, Australia, where he married an Irish girl and she is a 5th generation descendent. Henry went to Fiji and married If you are still working on your genealogy, I can put you in touch with her.

The first white settlers were in Fiji by the early 1800s, so it's highly unlikely Joseph Vincent TERRY was the first if he had divorced Mary Ann O'CONNOR in 1861 in Australia.

If you do a search on http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp and do a search for Surname: TERRY and choose Fiji for country - there are three entries for a John Vincent TERRY

Birth: JUL 1836 Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Death: 03 JUN 1894 Suva, , Fiji

Parents:
Father: Thomas TERRY
Mother: Frances CREW

and marriages to:
Ellen - 1854 Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

and

Mary Ann O'CONNOR - 14 SEP 1858 Melbourne, Victoria,
Australia

If your neighbors ancestor Joseph Vincent TERRY was born JUL 1836 Hobart, Tasmania and his parents were Thomas TERRY and Frances CREW, then it's highly possible that John Vincent TERRY is Joseph Vincent TERRY.

"A rumor has been in circulation in New London, Conn., to the effect that Capt. Silas Buchanan and his wife and Riley Sweet, all of New London, who were supposed to have been lost at sea many years ago. are still living, prisoners at one of the Fejee Islands.

Captain Buchanan sailed from San Francisco some 11 or 12 years [about 1855] since, bound for Australia, accompanied by his wife.

The vessel in which he sailed, a small fore-and-aft schooner, called the 'Sea Breeze', was never heard from, and it was believed that she went down at sea, and that all on board perished.

She was owned principally by Captain Buchanan and Riley Sweet, the latter going out in her as mate.

Edward Chapman, formerly of New London, a son-in-law of Captain Buchanan, upon hearing the rumor of his safety, at once proceeded to New York, to look up the men who reported the story, and who are said to have been in captivity with them.

If he finds the reports well-founded, he will go to Washington immediately, and make efforts to have a government vessel despatched to the islands without delay, for the purpose of rescuing the parties from their long imprisonment."

Rev.William Maitland Woods born 1864 Mayfair,London, UK. Married Alice Mary Games on Thursday Island. Padre for Aust Army. Military record exists in Canberra, After WW1 went to FIJI and left 1922 for appointment in Hawaii. Died 1929.
Also Freemason in Cairns after leaving Thursday Island. Some records indicate had 2 children. Record of Wife and 1 child surviving after he died in Honolulu.

It is not a microfiche, it is a microfilm. You must note the call number, go to your nearest Mormon Family History Centre, and order a copy of that microfilm, using the call number. This may take a while to arrive, as it probably has to be ordered from Utah to wherever you are. However, once it has arrived you go and read the microfilm, using a microfilm reader, and print off or copy down the details of the registration.

Otherwise you could apply for a copy of the certificate directly from the Registrar in Fiji. Google the Government of Fiji website.

Telephone or email them first to get a price.

It appears that Kenneth Gough Wiseman was my grandfather's brother (Harold Vincent Wiseman), and their father (John Hepburn Wiseman) was born in Scotland and then moved to the West Indies, then to Fiji, and eventually South Africa. My archives (notes from my mother) say that Atherlie Catherine Wiseman (nee Deary) was married to John Hepburn Wiseman and they were married on 25 March 1876 in Kingston.
