I am not related to this lady, but she was a wartime friend of my mother's. I believe she was living in Auckland in the 1990's but that she was born in South Africa around 1921 or 1922. Her husband (I think former husband) was named Patrick Doyle and I know names of three children - Barry, Pauline and Odette. I am just curious to know if she is still living or whether she has descendents I could contact. I have a few old photos and memories that my mother passed on to do with the WWII SOE section F and the French resistance, my interest is solely to better understand life and times.

Grateful for any leads or pointers,
paul c.

Possibly she was married to Henry WICKENS before that. Her parents were Elizabeth GREENOFF (1847-1923) and Edward John MESSAGE (1844-1923).
Any info to help me to trace them would be much appreciated.
Thanks Irina
Henry William THOMPSON was supposedly born in or near Dargaville, Northland. His age varies slightly but he would have been born around 1898-1900. His children remember that he spoke of Dargaville rather than Auckland.

Does anyone else descend from William THOMPSON and Ivy Christina ROBERTSON?
Wolfran & Rosina Cottingham of South Street, Newton, Auckland

In 1852 Wolfran Cottingham married Rosina Elizabeth Haselden in Canterbury Kent. Shortly after they married, they went to New Zealand.
We are unable to identify Wolfran Cottingham's birth - can anyone enlighten us?
Also, how do you check historial BMD's in Australia. There doesn't seem to be much online. Any advice?
From what we can gather Wolfran served in the 58th Regiment and probably received a land grant after discharge.
Our interest in this family is through his wife Rosina, she was the daughter of our 3X great grandfather's sister Lucy Thompson and husband Wm.Haselden.

Is anyone familiar with this family?
Wolfran Cottingham b.? England
Rosina Elizabeth b. 1835 Bethnal Green London.
Their children were born Auckland New Zealand: Wolfran b.1852, Louisa b. 1855 Amy Maria b.1857, Rosina Elizabeth born/died 1864, Charlotte Jane 1869, Robert Stanislaus Wessel born/died 1871

Most of the New Zealand info was gleaned from the National Library of New Zealand Paperspast.
Interestingly, in a 1902 newspaper article a 17yr old Wolfran Cottingham goes missing, but later turns up. This must be a grandchild of the original Wolfran and Rosina.
Thanks in advance
Pam

Hi, I'm across the DITCH, in Sydney NSW. I am trying to find an obit for Ellen Keeffe March 1876 and her husband, James or John KEEFFE. They arrived 1865 on The Armstrong. He was alive when she died. They had at least five children born in Ireland, and she was in her early 30's when they landed in Auckland. A daughter married Edward VAZEY, a son married Louisa PRICE. James/John Keeffe had served in the Crimea. I have much info to share. Relatives found in Sydney, Cornwall, California, etc, and we want to share our info with the NZ family too. Some descendants are in their late 80's and have reached that stage of life where their early memories are really good oral history, and so far, just about everything that has been checked out is SPOT ON. Please get in contact

Lost, Stolen or Strayed looking for SMITH in Auckland abt 1915 to say 1975

Thomas H Smith born Sydney NSW 1886 and his brother Reuben H Smith born Sydney 1893 went to NZ, presume Auckland sometime during WW1 and settled there. Their sister retired there in the late 1960's. They were my Dad's uncles.

It is entirely possible that Reuben H Smith changed his name to Reuben Hartley.

Thomas, Reuben, and Rebecca's birth certificates all show their parents were married in Wellington NZ (So I will post this message there too). That marriage was 12 June 1881, between John Ellington Smith and Mary Ann Hunt. Despite much searching we have not yet found any NZ record for that marriage.

I have no idea if Thomas or Reuben married, had children, or when they died, and I am just starting on this particular line of my family history, so ANY CLUES are most welcome.

Cheers, Many thanks for reading this message,

Tis Me, from across the ditch!

If someone would please look up the newspapers around that time, for the death/funeral notices that would be wonderful. She was my grandmother. I think there would have been a cremation service. I remember my father attending, and he has been gone 20 years this month. We are all in NSW Australia.
Rebecca born NSW 1891, married NSW 1909, 7 children all born NSW between 1910 and 1930. Her parents had married in NZ in 1881.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hello:

I am trying to trace my 2nd great grandfather, William Henry Pitts, who I believe moved to Birkenhead, Auckland, New Zealand in about June 1914. He was about 70 years old by this time, so I wonder if some of his children were not already there. Here are the details on his family--

William Henry Pitts (b.10 Jul 1844) married Isabella Tait in Ahmednagar, India in 1869. Their children were as follows:

Maude Isabella Pitts 1870-?
Mabel Jane Pitts 1872-? (married 1st Alfred Kaufmann, 2nd Percy Pittman)
William Tait Pitts 1874-?
Olive Mary Georgina Pitts 1875-? (married Frank Kimpton)
Henry William Pitts 1880-1955 (settled in Canada)
Edwin John Pitts 1882-1966 (settled in Canda)
Laura Katherine Pitts 1885

If anyone is familiar with these people, I would love to hear from you.

Also, I suspect William Henry may have died in New Zealand, but since I am in the US, I do not have access to records. Does anyone have any advice on how/who to request a search of the NZ death indexes when I don't have a date of death?

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Thanks,
Linda Morris
lmorris@alumni.vanderbilt.edu

I am in NSW, and I am interested in Private Albert Henry KEEFFE who was Killed in Action at The Somme (France) in June 1916. His mother was a Mrs R McLean of Ponsonby. I think he may have been a descendant of John James Keeffe (a former soldier at Crimea as per my oral history) and his wife Ellen who arrived in NZ in 1865 on "The Armstrong". If so, then he may be a nephew of Mrs Julia VAZEY (alt spelling Vasey). I am a descendant of a John Keeffe who came to NSW from Auckland in the 1870's, he was born in Ireland, he and his siblings came to NZ with their parents on that 1865 voyage. I am interested in any details about any descendants of the Keeffe family, and I would like to share with my NZ branch as I have details of their Irish origins, and their US cousins as well as us lot here in NSW. Cheers

I live in Australia and am trying to research my family. Not havng a lot of luck so far I had a brother, father and grandfather all named Frederick Harold Batten. All deceased since about 1995, my father and grandfather in Auckland and brother in Whangarei last year. My grandfather was the father of Jean Batten the famous aviatrix of the 1930's. They lived in Rotorua in the early 1900's where Jean and her brother John were born and I'm not sure where my father was born.
Any help regarding this family line would be greatly appreciated

Hi I am researching my family history.Iam looking for any relatives to my gt aunt Agnes I don't know her married name but she was Agnes Froggatt. Agnes had 9 daughters so did her sister Beatrice. I know Agnes emigrated to New Zealand (could have been about mid 1900's) She came from a large family my grandfather being the youngest. He was Albert Edward Froggatt of Barnsley South Yorkshire England. Her parents were John & Sarah. John was born in Stockport in Cheshire in 1857 and died in Barnsley in 1915. I think Sarah was born in Barnsley in abt 1859. CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE?

Did you know Jack Hughes? b.1891 Belfast Ireland. Served in the New Zealand forces WW1. Married Lillian (Judy) Myhill 1947, and lived in Te Awamutu on Hazelmere Cres. Judy had 2 children from previous marriage, Phillip Amos and Norma (married name Stockman). Jack is a 100 year old family mystery. His family has always searched and wondered what happened to him. His only sister, my Grandmother died in 1972. We just want to know what he was like, what he did with his life beyond the Great War. If you knew Jack, please write and share what you know. Thankyou, Sandra

Hi lam trying to trace information on my great uncle Denis Michael Mantell born sept 1906 in the uk. He married a flora Jane Mcleod Kerr in 1931 in Suva Fiji, but then she remarried in 1940 to a man named Maurice Kedgley from auckland. Apart from that bit of info I cant find anything else on Denis, it may have been that he had moved to Australia or new Zealand or he may have died before 1940. Suva records havent shown up any deaths for denis nor a divorce. On his marriage certificate his occupation is a herds tester. I would be very grateful for any information.

James Robert Hill was the Grandfather I never met.
He lived in Auckland, [North shore?] around 1930 until his death in 1958. He was an apiarist and his nickname was I think "Honey" Hill. He was born in Kawakawa, was married in Whangarei in 1900, then divorced in 1920 and then remarried to an Australian in Auckland in 1923.
If anyone knows of him or has clues about him I would love to hear them. I'd like to get to know who he was.

Is anyone able to have a look at the electoral roll for the Henderson area in the 1960s. I am trying to trace a Donald Edward Carr who sometimes used the name Garry Lewis. I believe he worked for Inland Revenue and would probably have been in his mid to late forties around this time. I've been trying to locate him for about 20 years with no success.

Does anyone have data on my great uncle, Thomas SIMPSON who married Clara Glass McEWEN in 1899 in Manitoba then moved to NZ, I believe settling in the Auckland area. They had three know children: Zilla Mary (1902 - married a DEAN), Ewen (1906 - married a CAMPBELL), Ervin (1911), all born in or near Auckland. Ervin (also known as EPY )became a professor - taught at Berkley CA then moved to Cleveland OH. He contacted me once before he died in OH in 2000. I would be interested in marriages, burials for these peeople and hopefully contact with any descendants.
Regards, Robert Simpson - Canada - majestic@mts.net

Can someone please tell me what information can be found on NZ death records and if there is a way of doing an online search for historical bdm's? I've been looking online (as i live across the ditch) but it appears I need to order certificates over the phone or by fax

My g-grandfather Alex Rennie (changed his name from Adolph Rengatch) was born in the UK (I think) but died in Napier December 1967. I was hoping it could give me details of where he was born and his parents details.

I'm also looking for Beatrice Voisey. She is my g-grandmothers sister, she was born in London but died in NZ in 1963 (I think she also lived around Napier). As her and my g-grandmother (Ivy Rennie nee Morgan) didn't share the same father I'm hoping it has Beatrice's father's details on it (or at least her maiden name).

Any help would be greatly appreciated
WW1 P.O.W Camps in Devonport, Auckland ?

Hi there, have traced many of my German ancestors through Ancestry. I have a letter dated 1916 from a German Great Uncle. In his letter, he refers to his brother ( Adolph !!) being a prisoner of war in Devonport, Auckland, NZ. However, the writing is in broken english and badly written. We clearly read Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand, but the 1st part of the address for the POW camp looks like either Port Cantley, or Fort Cantley. I am assuming it is Port. I wondered if anyone out there would know. I have tried in vain to find a local histopry group to contact. We are puzzled as to how he would have ended up in N.Z. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a difficult question about a Birth.
My Greatgrandmother was born in 1846 in Auckland. This was at the time of the troubles at Kororeka [Russell]. Her parents were evacuated from the Bay of Islands to Auckland[?Army Barracks, Parnell]. I don't know for sure but it is said she had a twin brother, Mitchell who died soon after.
As the official Registration of Births began in 1847 I'm finding it difficult to follow up. Her parents were Scots so she may have been reg. in a Scottish church. Or maybe a church in Parnell.
If anyone has any ideas about where I could look next I'd be grateful. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to could check the relevant Church registers for me. I live in Holland and so it's a bit difficult finding unofficial info.

I am trying to trace the birth records for three of four children born between 1855 and 1859 in Auckland to John STEVENSON, merchant, and his wife Mary Ann (nee RENSHAW).
I am particularly interested in two of the children as I have been given conflicting dates for their births.

Mary Louisa was b 1856 or 1857 (UK censuses have her consistently as older than her brother)
William Henry was b 1857 or 1856
The third child born in Auckland was Edith Gertrude b 1858

Their parents were married in London in 1854 and had returned in time for the birth of their last child in Dec 1859.

I would also be interested in learning anything about the business that John STEVENSON carried out in Auckland - later UK censuses have him as a Commission Merchant or Cement Manufacturer.

Can anyone help or point out how I should proceed, please?

Not traced so far.

JOHN LAWRENCE HAWKINS was born in 1863 in Port Arthur; Tasmania. It's possible that he was working as a miner in Thames with his father in the 1880s-1890s. Not traced so far.

WILLIAM HAWKINS was born in 1866 in Auckland. He married PHOEBE JANE PATTERSON in 1891 (Ak.) and they had 3 children - two daughters (names unknown) c1892 and c1910 and a son, WILLIAM JOHN LAWRENCE HAWKINS born in 1893. William (snr) was a boatmaker who died in 1952.

A fourth child, MARY ANNE HAWKINS, was my g.g.grandmother. She married GEORGE SNELGAR in 1874 and had 10 children before dying in 1945.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Robinson Family of Auckland area

Hi
I am wondering if someone has access to lookups in New Zealand.
I have very little information on the Robinson Family and am hoping someone can help me as I am unsure on how to do lookups in NZ or if it is even possible. What I have:

Robert William Robinson of Otahuhu near Auckland, baker (I am going off his will) was married to an Isabella unknown, I am unsure of their birth years. Had the following children:
Frances Ethel Andrew, nee Robinson
Edith Amy Sutherland, nee Robinson
Ruby Jane Robinson, spinister in 1916
Robert William Robinson a clerk in Auckland Post Office in 1916
Isabella Eva Robinson unmarried in 1916
Gertrude Letitia Robinson, spinster in 1916.

Robert then went on to add a Codicil to his will where it states "His adopted son Frederick Robinson a butcher from it looks Whangarei" Frederick was born around 1883.
It is family thought that Frederick was possibly the son of Gertrude, Isabella or one of the other girls but we are unsure.

So going off the circa of Birth for Frederick it could mean that Robert William senior was born somewhere between the 1830's to 1850's.
I know this is a longshot but I am hoping someone out there can look or even point me in the right direction.
Many many thanks in advance

Kind Regards
Sharon Taylor
(Australia)

David Jones, son of Harry Hewett Jones and Irene

I am trying to find my cousin David Jones. He is the son of Harry Hewett Jones, b. 1913 England d. 1965 Royal Oak, Auckland, NZ and Irene Jones (maiden name not known) b. 1912 England d. 1991 Auckland, NZ. I know Irene remarried a Mr Sheppard (possibly in 1969). Mr Sheppard's first names were either John Ernest or Robert Ernest Harvey.
David Jones was as far as I know born in England and went out to NZ with his parents, obviously some time before 1965.

We lost touch with Irene after my father's (Edwin Cluley Jones) death in 1977. David is the only cousin on our father's to myself (Robert Andrew Jones) and my brother (Stephen Francis Jones), so we would be very interested if anyone knows of him. I visit New Zealand every couple of years so would be keen to meet up.

Passenger/Shipping lists 1912-1913

Hi,
Does anyone know a website which lists the names of ships and/or passengers on those ships which travelled from England to New Zealand between Sep 1912 and Mar 1913? I have found many sites listing ships and passengers, but not covering this time period. The main UK site only goes up to 1899, even though the advert is to 1960. I have these specific dates as my ancestors were married in Croydon, Surrey 31 Aug 1912, and had their first child 12 Mar 1913 at Auckland, New Zealand. As they were married in Croydon and their child was born in Auckland, I assume they departed from near London and arrived in Auckland.
Thanks,
Helen

I am trying to trace William Venville Born about 1890 in New Zealand and his English born wife Annie Winifred Ward born 1892 in London. They married in 1919 in England in a Baptist Church in Walton-on-Thames. He was a soldier and served in WW1 in England where he met my Great Aunt Annie. She went to Auckland, New Zealand on 13th March 1920 from Southampton; it was a ship transporting soldiers and their wives home after WW1.
Is there any one who can help me find my Venville Family? I live in England, and getting access information is difficult from here.
Thanks
My grandmother's sister, Elizabeth (Bessie) Banks emigrated from Paisley Scotland to New Zealand in 1911 with her husband James Gillan, a chauffeur, and son John b 1905. I believe James Gillan died aged 35 in 1914 in an accident and is buried in Purewa Cemetry Auckland. They had had a second child believed to be a girl prior to/soon after his death. Bessie also died young, aged 47 in 1929 and is buried in Purewa alongside her husband. Her sister Sarah (Sally) Banks joined her in New Zealand after she was widowed but I have been unable to find any records of her. It is believed she married in NZ. I have found a J Gillan in the 1922 Mount Alfred Grammar School list annoted as moved from Auckland GS which may be son John. I have no NZ BDM records of any of these people. Any help in filling in the pieces or finding descendents of Bessie and Sally would be wonderful! Gillie

Source: [Auckland Harbour Board personnel] 1871-1907, Pages 1 - 7. Abstract: Master of PS TAINUI (70352) in 1890. The 'Watt Index' should be consulted for fuller details.

I think he's mine, b 1858, Hawke's Bay. Any ideas on how to find out more about him, gratefully received, or about other masters / pilots of the era, to rule them out . . .
Sheppard: John Ernest or Robert Ernest Harvey

Calling any relatives of John Ernest Sheppard / Robert Ernest Harvey Sheppard, died in Auckland Nov 1991.
