Hi Tania
What a terrific reply and I am amazed at the story you have unearthed. Sylvia, my wife, had heard from her mother that Hugh had been a lighthouse keeper but we had no evidence to prove this. Also the 1938 register shows Evan living at 3 George Street, an address mentioned in the article. It looks like they were friends even if not related.
Further research is required both in Anglesey and in New Zealand.
Many thanks
Alan Price.

Hi alanprice5

Not sure this has anything to do with your family but an interesting story.

Found marriage 1913/768- Hugh Owen WILLIAMS married Alice May COLLINS

Also found a death for a Hugh Owen WILLIAMS age: 69 in 1958

As Evan was born about 1891 maybe they were brothers.

But the interesting thing is this story online about an Alice May WILLIAMS and letters she wrote. If you use the addresses from these letters and the address that the Williams were living at in 1946/9 they are in same area.

Anyway read it, it maybe of interest.

http://publicaddress.net/speaker/who-no-letters-from-alice-m...

Cheers
Tania

Williams family of Auckland

I am researching the Grandfather of my wife. His name was Evan Williams and he arrived in New Zealand abt. 1934. His occupation was a seaman. He died on 30th March 1954 in the public hospital, Auckland. I have found that he lived in 11 Costley Street in 1946 and 1949 and also at the same address was a Hugh Williams, occupation Customs Officer, and an Alice May Williams. I do not know if they are all related or who married who but would be grateful if anyone in New Zealand can shed any more light on the family.

Hi Robin - you could obtain a Cert. on-line at BDM Wellington however you may not need that now as I have confirmed that John Patrick & Vera did have a Daughter known as Vena who should be living in South Auckland ( at least she was in 2009 when her Mother died ) - at this stage however I do Not know what her Married surname is. I could do some more research in that regard but you will need to contact me at:-
gandschatfield@xtra.co.nz
regards Graham C

Dear Graham
Thank you so much for your extremely helpful email. It sounds like you have found the right person.
The mystery has been that we know John P BARTLETT emigrated with a lady called Vera and that they had a daughter called Vina, a very unusual name. Whilst we know his parents and siblings, no-one has any idea when he emigrated and precisely where they moved to, though your email is helpful in that area.
As it sounds more than 99% likely that this is the correct person, do you know whether I can order a Death Certificate on line?

Hi Robin - I have found a John Patrick BARTLETT who was born 30 Dec.1917 in the Eastry district of Kent and who died 31 Aug.1987 in South Auckland and was cremated at Purewa Cemetery. At that same Cemetery there was also a Vera Alma Bartlett who died 14 May 2009 and was also cremated there. She was born 28 Oct.1918.
I was Not able to establish when and where they were married whether in the UK or NZ nor if her maiden name was Conroy so that I cannot verify whether she was John's wife or not- although it does seem likely.
If you think that might be your John P. Bartlett then you could easily obtain a copy of his Death Cert. ( NZ $20 ) which would give you a lot of information including his Parents names, his Wife's name and when & where they were married and also the ages & gender of any surving children - although not their names.
I hope that info. may assist you,
regards Graham C

Hi to researchers in Auckland
I am looking for a long lost relative called John P BARTLETT b.abt.1918 in Kent, England who is believed to have emigrated to New Zealand after marrying a lady from New Zealand called Vera CONROY.
After many years searching I stumbled across an entry on Ancestry from someone called Vina. This name corresponds with the vague memories of the family.
I have left messages since Oct12 for this person on Ancestry but have not received a reply (ID is VinaJulia).
As time is 'running out' for the living relatives here in the UK, I would like to make contact with this family's descendants, wherever they are in NZ.
I would appreciate any assistance in this area so that we can put two long lost families in touch.
Thank you in anticipation.
Robin

David Jones, son of Harry Hewett Jones and Irene

I am trying to find my cousin David Jones. He is the son of Harry Hewett Jones, b. 1913 England d. 1965 Royal Oak, Auckland, NZ and Irene Jones (maiden name not known) b. 1912 England d. 1991 Auckland, NZ. I know Irene remarried a Mr Sheppard (possibly in 1969). Mr Sheppard's first names were either John Ernest or Robert Ernest Harvey.
David Jones was as far as I know born in England and went out to NZ with his parents, obviously some time before 1965.

We lost touch with Irene after my father's (Edwin Cluley Jones) death in 1977. David is the only cousin on our father's to myself (Robert Andrew Jones) and my brother (Stephen Francis Jones), so we would be very interested if anyone knows of him. I visit New Zealand every couple of years so would be keen to meet up.

I am researching William Davis/Davies, wife Jane and son Joseph who it looks like arrived in Auckland in 22 June 1841 on the Shamrock from Sydney. William was a printer by trade and I have read that other early newpaper/printing related people arrived on the Shamrock at this time. What is known is that in about 1847 Jane had a daughter, Henrietta with her husband James Russell (can't find the brith or marriage yet). William seems to have disappeared, perhaps deceased. Jane and her two children are back in Sydney in the mid 1860s and James Russel is listed as deceased of Auckland in Henrietta's engagement announcement in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1865.
I would be so grateful is anyone could provide assistance or suggestions on where to look for information on the family in early Auckland and information early newspapers and their employees as it is possible that William worked for one of them

Many thanks,
Ann Crouch

Hello jeanbarker52.
I am not quite sure how to use this site. I have the complete family tree of John Ross Mcgill (born 1846 Ayrshire Scotland), married to Elizabeth Rhind born 7/8/1858 in Inverness. John McGill was my Great Grandfather and came to New Zealand on the ship 'Helenslee' in 1864 with his parents and brothers. Elizabeth Rhind came to NZ on the ship 'viola' in 1865 with her family. They had a family of 17. Archibald McGill was one of the 17 and was my Grandfather. My family tree goes back several generations before these two, and back to Scotland. There is alot of informaation on the passengers of the ship and the happenings of the time. I could scan it and email it to you if you are interested?

thanks Alison McGill

Hi Megan, Thanks for the info. I didn't have maiden names for either of Royce's wives which made finding them a bit difficult. Ernest also had a wife and baby daughter in Australia when he left for NZ. I believe the divorce was in 1935 which made me think that Royce was a stepson. I have a picture of Ernest's mother, Anastasia, on my "Dywer Molloy Howe..." tree. Her husband, Ernest De Tourret sr was a noted photographer in Auckland but he and wife Annie appear to have separated by 1920 as Annie was resident in Australia off/on from this time. There were also 2 children ( Annie d?? and Milton d1908) who died young and 2 sisters who returned to NZ and married almost immediately after the death of their mother in 1943. Hope we can swap more info! regards Jane

My grandmother Molly Alvine Franke married Royce.
Royce died in a car accident on Jan 6 1959 in Eketahuna (NZ) and he was survived by his second wife Sylvia Jessop and 3 daughters who were at the time aged 7, 5, 2 .
I am trying to find out more info on Royce - I am going to try to get his marriage certificate for futher details of his seconf wife and to see if I can track her down.
