I don't know how active this thread still is but Ruth Mingins I feel sure we are related very distantly. My gran was born Rosemary MINGINS in 1938, daughter of Alfred MINGINS (1908-1950) and Mary WARD (1914-1966). Alfred's parents were Joseph Tolson MINGINS (1880-1966) and Rose Ann BROWN (1884). Joseph Tolson's grandfather (another Joseph) was the brother of Thomas MINGINS (1814) who married Agnes RILEY from whom the Australia and New Zealand branch are descended. According to my information, this is where names like PENBERTHY, GERMAIN, and THOMAS come in. Would love to share more information.
Thank you very much for that information. I have had to re-write the whakapapa out for the family as it was abit worn out. I was able to decipher the names in this whakapapa book that I have and had it checked out. More name had to be added to it also as I do not have them recorded.

Kia ora
James Henry Charters was born 1885 in Australia, had 7 children with Dorothy Frances Lillian Satchwell between 1914 and 1927.James was jockey and family story has it that he travelled to New Zealand possibly as early as 1928,and had another family there.
In a paper edition of IGI back in mid 90's,i noted an entry including James and Dorothy's surname lodged by a woman in NZ,unfortunately i didn't write it down,my father in law almost forbidding us from following up this line.
Does NZ racing have a register of jockeys and trainers?
I know this is a long shot though another family story was false,if i find nothing it wont change the tree.

Thanks Liz.

I ordered the marriage printout. Hopefully that will give me enough information to determine if this is the right William. After that maybe I can find something in the other databases that you mentioned. I have ordered other certificates from NZ archives and they have been very helpful.

Thanks again
Steve

There is a photograph of Delahay Woods nee Whelch 1820-1904 held in the Manuscripts Collection at Auckland City Libraries. The information held by Auckland City Library says that Delahay Whelch was the daughter of Henry Hodges Whelch and Elizabeth Delahay Whelch of Dover and that she married James R Woods in April 1855.

Hi Steve,

There appear to have been several William McKay's in NZ during the 1800's, and at least two of these were from Caithness.

Check the "New Zealand Immigration Passenger lists" at https://familysearch.org/ to locate William McKay, landed Canterbury, NZ on 21 April, 1863 from Caithness, ploughman, aged 20, ship "Huntress". Another Wiliam McKay (I presume), landed Canterbury, NZ on 10 January, 1864, from Caithness, farm labourer, aged 24, with wife, Isabella, age 22, ship "Canterbury".

Marriage record for William and Mary Roche, 1876, found at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/ For more info order the printout rather than certificate - more detail and cheaper. Birth and death records available at same site. Enter wife's name and surname for list of children.

If you can determine where they lived, then the following cemetery database may prove useful http://www.clanfraser.org.nz/genealogy/cemeterylinks.html

Early NZ newspaper database has many references to "William McKay" at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

And of course, ancestry.com has NZ electoral rolls.

Hope this helps,
Liz

Looking for information on William McKay. William was born in Bower, Caithness, Scotland in 1844. He emigrated to New Zealand in the late 1860s. Williams brother Hugh was already living in the Dunedin, Otago area. William was still living at the time of his brothers death in Oct 1915.

This may be the William McKay that married Mary Roche and worked as a shepherd at several stations between Alexandra and Dunedin.

I am looking for any information on William including his children and date and place of death and burial.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Duncan Keir Burgess was the son of Adam Burgess and Grace Keir, married 27 January 1885 in Ashburton. He was their third child and second son, and was born in 1896 in Christchurch. He died in 1971.

I would be interested in any information about his descendants, because he was my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

Hi Glynis,
WOW!! Is this a bolt out of the blue. It's been more than 9 years since I posted that message. You have made my day!!!
I am still very much into my family genealogy but had just about given up in this side of the family due to the Smith surname and the hassle of dealing with the NZ BDM's from this side of the ditch. (South East Qld is my home).
I would rather deal directly via email than go through Ancestory so my email is gclough@dodo.com.au if you want to contact me directly.
I have got a couple of questions before I could answer you without giving wrong information and making your search harder and even more confusing and frustrating.
I have no info on Frederick but I have info showing that he had 7 siblings (4 brothers and 3 sisters) including Averial Iris Smith (my grandmother) and Aubrey Lorimer Smith.
What relationship would Frederick be to you?
Would this William John Smith be Fredericks' father?
Do you know anything of their mother Laura?
Hoping to hear from you soon.
Cheers,
Graeme.

I have been trying for years to locate the death of our ancestor William John Smith - do you have any info. Rumour has it that he died on the Victorian goldfields.
Looking for photographs of WW1 New Zealand soldiers

Hello all,

I am one of the founders of the Onward Project. We are a none profit group who are working on a project for the 100th Anniversary of WW1 (we are recognised by the NZ government's WW100 Centenary organisation). Our aim is to publish a photograph of each man and woman that served overseas between 1914-1918 as part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. It is a fairly ambitious project, with around 100,000 photos to find, but we have already published the first volume with over 4,100 portraits, and we are well on our way to completing volume 2.

We are asking for help from the public to submit photos of their family members that served, and have found the genealogical people of great help!!!

If you can help by supplying a photo they can be sent to onwardnzef.book[at]gmail.com or go to our website at http://www.fairdinkumbooks.com/#!news-and-events/c1pz

Thank you

Phil Beattie & Matt Pomeroy
Onward Project

Hi, I am Nathan, grandson of Joseph James Malone. Joseph was Nellie's sister. I read your post concerning Nellie Wright (nee.Malone), and thought I could provide some reasons for the gaps you are having difficulty over.

Nellie was placed into Tokanui Hospital near Te Awamutu at some stage, and I think she may have died there, according to what my family told me. Sefton Cecil Wright, her husband, apparently was a good man, and he moved to Te Awamutu or Cambridge to be closer to his wife.

Such things were kept hidden in those days, unlike our more open society these days. I hope this explains a few things for you.

Nathan.

That's right, and the James who died in 1946 was his son, who was born in 1862 in South Africa, he also had a brother called Nicholas who was born c1864 in South Africa. The four of them got on the ship "Eveline", in December 1864 and sailed to New Zealand, arriving on 22 Jan 1865. They were granted land in Pukekohe where they had a third son, John Francis Wilson born c1867, and he was my husbands grandfather. I can find no record of his birth though.
All these things give information on James Wilson(Senior),but it is only references to him that we have, no actual evidence.
Regards, Denise

Yes I have tried Archway but there are too many James Wilson to narrow it down. Bridget (his wife) became a Berry in 1893 but was going by the Berry name from at lease 1870 because Bridget had children to Thomas Berry from 1870-1880 but didn't marry Thomas until 1893, the inference being that she had to wait for James Wilson (first husband) to die. I know about all the Berry relatives but cannot find a death for James Wilson, which I am working on and have done now for 10 years. Thomas Berry junior died in 1948, and senior in 1926. Most of the Berry family are buried in Kimihia Cemetery in Huntly.
Thanks,
Denise
