Connolly ... died at 72 on 13 Jul 1953, R.I.P."
(this could be James' son)

If anyone can help me please find the descendants of this family or any information, I would appreciate the help ...
James and Margaret had the children :
James Joseph; Johanna; John; Margaret; Michael P.; Matthew and Elizabeth Josephine.... I am not sure if any of the children married, or had children... Love to hear from anyone who could help me thanks so much
regards
Maree, Australia

Re: TSS Captain Cook 1957 trip

Dear readers,

I incidentally came across this website when browsing through my parents' history. Here is what I found, maybe it is of your interest :

TSS CAPTAIN COOK

Built as the LETITIA in 1924 by the Fairfield Co, Glasgow for the Donaldson
Line of Glasgow. She was a 13,475 gross ton ship, length overall 538ft x beam
66.4ft, one funnel, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 15 knots. There was
accommodation for 516-cabin and 1,000-3rd class passengers. Launched on 14th Oct.1924, she sailed from Glasgow on her maiden voyage to Liverpool, Quebec and Montreal on 24th
Apr.1925, and she ran a joint service with the ill-fated ATHENIA to Quebec and Montreal in the summer and Halifax and St John NB in the winter. In 1927 her accommodation was
altered, to carry 298-cabin, 310-tourist and 964-3rd class passengers. In
1939 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty and commisioned as an Armed Merchant Cruiser. She later became a troopship and was extensively damaged in 1943 and was temporarily repaired in the USA. In 1944 she was taken over by the Canadian Government and converted into a hospital ship with a medical staff of 200 and a capacity
for 1,000 wounded. Over the next year or so she carried over 7,000 sick and wounded
back to Canada and was on her way to the Pacific theatre of war when Japan
surrendered. She was then used for the repatriation of Canadian troops and families. While
still engaged in this work, she was sold in 1946 to the Ministry of Transport and renamed
EMPIRE BRENT. While on route to Halifax in 1947, she collided with and sank
the STORMONT in the River Mersey and had to be drydocked in Birkenhead with
stem damage. In December 1947, she was completely overhauled on the Clyde
and refitted as a troopship. Used for trooping voyages to India and the Far
East until 1949 when she commenced an emigration service between the UK and
Australia with a capacity for 965 emigrants. Withdrawn from this service
late in 1950, she was laid up for about six months and was then completely
reconditioned as a New Zealand emigrant ship with accommodation for 1,088
passengers in two-, four-, and six berth cabins. Renamed CAPTAIN COOK, her
ownership was to pass gradually to the New Zealand government, who were
paying for her by instalments. She commenced sailings from Glasgow via
Panama to Wellington on 5th Feb.1952, taking about 33 days, sometimes being
used to repatriate troops from the Far East on the return voyage. From April
to October 1955 she was chartered to Donaldsons and made seven round voyages
between Glasgow, Liverpool and Montreal, but then went back to the New
Zealand service. In 1957 she had a fire while in Wellington, but was able to
sail to the UK for repairs and in December of that year was chartered to
Holland and brought back 1,000 refugees from Jakarta. She arrived at Glasgow
at the end of her 25th New Zealand voyage in February 1960, was laid up at
Falmouth and was then sold to British Iron and Steel
Corporation, towed to Inverkeithing and broken up. [Donaldson Atlantic Liner
"Letitia" of 1925 by Captain J.H.Isherwood, Sea Breezes Magazine, September
1967] –
Hi Jo,
Subsequent to our posting yesterday, we have had a closer look at your research findings and there are a couple which are very worthwhile. We refer first, to the Charles Beard and Mary Ann Riddell marriage in 1863 when our Charles Beard would have been 31, which sounds very reasonable indeed. I note that the Folio number is 0788 - do you know where that might be? (I know they probably married where his wife lived but as I am reluctant to get into a buy-it-and-see with NZ BMDs, if it is in the north of the south island or even the Wellington area, it would be well worth while shelling out a few dollars to get some more information (although a death certificate would, I know give us more).
I am inclined that William Beard on the Dunedin nominal index may be one of the Wanganui Beards, as the Hogan children (from the second marriage) remember William as being in the Motueka area where he was a bachelor with a pet Kaukau!!! which would be in the late 1890's. But nothing is impossible.
There is also a Henry Beard-Margaret O'Donnell marriage in 1879 which is a possibility (the Folio number quoted is 2100). Do you by any chance know what area that number refers to?
Thank you for your continued interest
cheers
Tony and Rosalind Mooar

Hi Elizabeth,
There was always a family story, reinforced by the early Baldicks that George Baldick was indentured to Unwins in Sydney along with William Beard George Hall and George Wilton who led the small party to the Wairau. There is the possibility that Wynen a local land agent who acvted as an agent for other interests was acting for the Unwin company at that time as he was the first man the Unwin group met when they landed in Port Underwood.
I could find little from the Oz law society as there was no company of that name, however the Mitchell Library in NSW furnished me with the background that there was such a company, their principle was an Unwin, the company name was changed and that they bought and sold land in NZ in the 1840s and maybe later.
Cheers
Tony and Rosalind.

Hi Sharon, I see you were corresponding with Elizabeth in 2004. Have you made any progress with your Beards since then? Ours are William Beard who married Ann Coleman and came to NZ in 1840 with their children Charles, William, Henry and Eliza. Jane Beard was born in NZ in 1840 shortly after the death of her father William. Ann subsequently married James Hogan also in 1840. Following the Wairau affray in 1843 they moved first to Nelson then Motueka. In the early 1870s they moved south to Herbert.
If anything rings a bell, do let us know
Best wishes
Tony and Rosalind Mooar

Hi Elizabeth,
Many thanks for your recent email.
Do tell us, you must be a descendent of the Beards or Hogans, where do you fit into the tree? I read your original comment in 2004 to Sharon and it seemed like you were descended from Charles Beard (you mentioned "my" Charles)
I do hope you are? Could you let us know please.
I note with much gratitude that you are really up with the play in terms of the early history as written by Joyce Thompson - did we send you a copy.
Hi there
There are some 95 Pottingers listed on the National Archives Website - some are probate records which include a copy of the persons will if they made one. I am living in Christchurch and will go and read the probate records of any that are held in Christchurch if that is of assistance to you. I guess you have had a look at the Christchurch Cemetery Database (7 Pottingers in there). I can also go to the City Library and look up the card index of Baptism, Marriage, Funerals for the Churches in and around Christchurch. This card index includes the people buried in Church Cemeteries. No charge for any of the above.

Regards
Jenny

Hi Jo,
What an extraordinary amount of work you have done in such a short space of time. You are right those are our Beards or most of them are. We have no Hugh or James although that William looks vbery interesting indeed. (We have a William Charles and a Henry Beard we are looking out for.)One or two things may interest you noteably Bayles was spelled Bayliss by Jane when she registered the birth of Newton. What an extraordinary relationship that must have been after Bayliss dropped from the scene. We have family stories of a subsequent marriage but nothing on the BMDs and dates are wildly inaccurate (not unusual of course) but one birth Jane doesn't even note the father. It was Bayliss of course she left him while he was working on the Aorere Gold Fields and while she was pregnant.

Most of the others are ours - I am intrigued by the Dunedin beard - we have lost the Beard boys completely maybe they went back to Oz where Tom Cugley was starting his own dynasty. Who knows?

What is your interest in the Beards - would love to know more! Best wishes Tony and Rosalind Mooar in wintry Christchurch.

Hello Elizabeth,
Before I opened our emails today I googled "Elizabeth Quinn" I knew we had corresponded previously but had lost contact as you do. There are hundreds, sportspeople, auctioneers, no name it... So it is lovely to be in contact again.

I have searched Tom Cugley for months to no avail. We have been in contact with the Cugley family in Gloucestershire and in Australia. No one knows what the relationship is. The best we can do is that Tom's mother's first name was "Susannah" now if we could find a Susannah Beard - but no luck.Of course he may have been a great nephew which makes the search a little more complex. We do have photos of Tom and his wife Kitty and a considerable family history kindly handed on by the Cuglaeys in Oz.
It is really the Beard boys we would like to nail. We wonder if they went back to Oz? You mentioned in an email on theis site Charles Beard. Are you descended from him. That would really be something. Do keep up the persistence - our e mail is tonyrosmooar@paradise.net.nz Best wishes Tony and Rosalind.

I am trying to track down the descendants of John Morrison Pottinger (b.1823 Lerwick, m.1858 Islington, Janet Mutter) . At least one of his sons has a NZ connection:-

Arthur William Pottinger (b.1866 Islington) married 22 Oct 1888 Fanny Gertrude Morton at Christchurch.

Their daughter

Marjorie [Morrison] Pottinger (b.1890 New Zealand m.1910 Charles Douglas Simmons)

I have also found mention of a Robert J Pottinger who married Mary Gifford Laurenson (born 6 May 1865) at Christchurch, NZ, 6 Jun 1889.

If this ties in with anyone's family tree or if you have any information I would be delighted to hear from you. I have a brief family tree at:

http://pottinger.50webs.org/index.htm

Regards

Stephen J F Plowman

Hi
Do a death search - surname King between 01/01/1875 and 31/12/1876 you will get a list of all the Kings whose death was registered between those two dates. There is an Elizabeth aged 42 which I am thinking is probably the person you are looking for.

Good luck and I hope it's the person you are looking for.

Regards
Jenny

Hello Dusty,

I am interested in researching a Margaret STEPHEN (nee ADLAM) who firstly came to Australia with her husband, Sidney James STEPHEN, and family before Sidney took a posting to NZ as Chief Justice and Judge, he dying in Auckland on 13/1/1857, Margaret then came back to Australia. Margaret and Sidney (Sydney) were married in Bermuda in about 1819, Margaret having been born c 1800 in St Kitts (St Christopher), her father was Alexander ADLAM. Do you at all have any information on Margaret/Alexander? I'm sorry that I cannot add any further information than that. Any assistance you could give me would be very much appreciated. Thanking you, Rhonda

We are seeking descendants of the Beards who came first to Australia on the Bussorah Merchant with their nephew Thomas Cugley. Thomas remained in Sydney while the Beards, William and (Mary)Ann nee Coleman and their children Henry, Charles and Eliza Mirena came on to NZ. William died on the Wairau bar and his daughter Jane was born following his death. Subsequently Ann Beard married James Coleman. We would love to hear from other researchers, especially descendants of the Beard boys who seem to have disappeared off the radar.
Hello. Charles Beard was as you know one of the five Beard children who were raised by their mum (Mary) Ann Beard nee Coleman when she married James Hogan after the death of william Beard on the Wairau Bar. William and Ann came to Sydney on the Bussorah Merchant and leaving Thomas Cugley their nephew(?) who they brought with them in Sydney they were indentured to the Unwin Company and came to NZ where William died on the Wairau Bar.I am descended from the Hogan marriage and of course we have photos and know heaps about the Eliza and Jane Beard who stayed and married in NZ but nothing about the Beard boys except that Henry once signed a petition in 1848 and had a pet native parrot. Apart from that they slipped off the wire. However we have researched the Beard back into the UK into the 1600s, which sounds like we collect names, we don't but are fortunate to have been in close contact with a Beard cousin in Gloucestershire for some years. We have also been able to put some material about Tom Cugley in Australia so would love to swap any information you would care top release about the Beards and the Cugleys. I am descended from the Hogan side of the family. We are at tonyrosmooar@paradise.net.nz Best wishes Tony and Rosalind Mooar in Christchurch New Zealand

Hi Jo,
The Beards and Ton Cugley left Bristol for Sydney in 1838. The beards were indentures to Unwin and Company and left the same year for Port Underwood (1839). William Beard died in 1839 and his widow Ann nee Coleman married James Hogan at Christmas 1839. They left Port Underwood in 1843 after the Wairau affray and settled in Motueka before journeying on in the 1870s to Herbert, Otepopo.
We would like to know what happened to the Beard boys.
Cheers
Tony and Rosalind Mooar
Hi Tony and Rosalind, life is very strange. A couple of months ago I tried to make contact with you on the email address I had from 2004 (ihug) but it bounced back, and now here you are!
I take it we still do not know if Thomas Cugley was a nephew of William and Ann Beard. I have searched the parish registers and have come up short.
The reason I was trying to contact you was to ask what documentaton you had for the indenture of William and Ann to the Unwin Company and where you sourced this from.
I will have another look for the "boys" and see if I can come up with anything.
Really great to hear from you again,
Cheers, Elizabeth

Hello Pinfold researchers. I suppose you already have all your NZ info by now. I have been doing Pinfold research as a sideline to the CHEGWIDDEN family in NZ. My Grandmother's sister Annie (née Chegwidden) FAULKNOR (widowed after only a year of marriage) married THOMAS GILES PINFOLD, son of John & Mary Jane, in 1901.
The name of Esther is on a printout of the family who emigrated, held by a lady in Dannevirke. Somehow the Pinfolds are connected to one of the Scottish Clans in NZ, and as she is (secretary?) she has to keep all the b-d-m records. I got a copy when I went to visit her in the late 1990s, when I was starting my research. Of course there wasn't the Net access back then that we have today, but the dates etc can now be checked online for NZ & UK.
John marr Margaret McKay.
Wilfred Earnest (yes, they spell it that way officially) is listed as TINFOLD in the online marriage records.
Yes, the Lawrences come into it. (They are also connected to the Chegwiddens). John's daughter Polly married Charles Lawrence 1889 and they farmed up on the East Coast in from Tolaga Bay.
PapersPast website also has some info about John Snr, and has the obituary for Annie Elizabeth Levy - she died of typhoid in Sydney, and the Voss's brought up her daughter.
However, here is some more stuff of interest. Read Chapter 6 of Rollo Arnold's book "The Farthest Promised Land" to see what was happening around Taynton just before John & Mary Jane emigrated. (John gets a mention).
ALSO, John (chr.12.6.1836) had 3 younger brothers & a younger sister, who all emigrated to Canada in the mid-1870s. Some of their descendants have put trees into the Public Tree section of ancestry.com,
Hope this is of help or interest.
Pauline (NZ)

I have an inquest report of Elizas death but no record of her burial or death certificate. Can anyone please enlighten me as to how/why this would be?

Thankyou jenny for your very promt reply.
I have been checking the NZ BDM historical records but have NOT been able to find Elizas death details. Obviously you have been able to, i don't know what I have been doing wrong... would you be able to send me the reference number so I can order the printout. Thankyou

Thanks Jo, another avenue to explore although I don't know why she would be buried in Invercargill.hmmm food for thought.
Eliza was baptised as such, all legal forms/certificates use Eliza, but of course it is worth checking out Elizabeth as I will do with the BDM records.Once again thankyou. :-)
