I found a registration (1870/3164) for his death there. You can order the death certificate for a cost.

Not sure if i have the correct place.
My ggg uncle Adam hunter Groat was born 1824 in pultenny town wick caithness.
i have found he drowned 16 december 1870 in manawatu-
Wanganunew zealand.
does anyone know if there would be a death certificate
for him. this is this is the only info info i have.
any help is much appreciated.

Hello Lisa, I live in New Plymouth and have been trying to find Emma Bottin's descendants in Taranaki. There seem to be so many Loveridges who lived in Taranaki and I have had trouble tracking the Bottin connection. My husband, Ivan McCracken, is a grandson of Emma Bottin's brother, Peter Bottin. I would be grateful for any information.

The NZSG Burial Locator CD has both Robert & Mary Ann dying in 1923 and being buried at Te Henui. The reference for the Cemetery Records is given as J02.23. J02.23 are the burial records for Te Henui and does list Robert, Mary Ann and a stillbirth (dated 1880) as being buried in the cemetery.

However of interest are the J02.22 records which are the memorial inscriptions for the same cemetery - there is an entry for Divehall as follows:

MUIR
(unmarked)
(unmarked)
(unmarked - Divehall - double plot)
(unmarked)
MORRISON

So it looks quite possible that they are buried in this double plot which is unmarked.

Hi folks,

I am descendant from Nicholas Pepperell, one of the William Bryan pioneers of New Plymouth. And I have an economic conundrum.

Several of Nicholas's grand-sons (sons of John Pepperell and Elizabeth Scandlyn) all filed for bankruptcy in the same year: 1880. Could anyone offer a suggestion as to what was going on in the area that would lead to so many bankruptcies?

The following brothers all filed in 1880, though at different times:

John William Pepperell;
Frederick James Pepperell;
Robert Henry Pepperell; and
Richard Edgar Pepperell.

BIG BILL RYAN - WAR VETERAN

I am looking for any information anyone has on a man referred to as "Big Bill Ryan" that lived in Taranaki between 1900 and 1925. I am working on a memorial for him. He was when he lived in Taranaki, unfortunately, stone blind.He had served in the United States Navy during the American Civil War before migrating to New Zealand to dig for gold, scouting and fighting the Maoris. He related that his life was spent in an auxiliary-steam frigate of the Union Navy. He once said, “What a lot of Englishmen, Scotch and Irish we captured. Half the Confederates seemed to be Britishers who enlisted for the fun of the thing. Me? Oh, I’m a Canadian.” Any help on his name, birth, life and death will be greatly appreciated. jamesmgray@bigpond.com

Bishop. Walter Bishop (1833-1881) - Son of Daniel Bishop - Emmigrated to New Plymouth on the Timandra. Family owned a farm up Egmont Road

Dutton. Peter Dutton (1825 -1901) - was a member of the 70th Regiment and served in india, as well as the Taranaki Land Wars.

Marjorie was my cousin whom I knew when I was a little girl. I remember her pre 1955 before her Aunty died but can not remember seeing her after that.

Annie Elizabeth SHELFORD married Albert Ivan GRIFFIN in 1948 (NZ Gen Soc matching brides and grooms cd). There is a death on the BDM historical online index for Annie Elizabeth GRIFFIN in 2007 and Albert Ivan GRIFFIN in 1998 https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/

Hi to Wendy,Jo and Jenny,I am so impressed with your efforts on my behalf.I will try to respond in this one message.I am still not sure I have the right lady.To Wendy thank you so much.I do have her parents death certs.I also knew about the two marriages you mentioned,but on further investigation I sort of put them aside.
To Jenny,Thank you again.The Sarah you mentioned in 1885 could possibly be her,which means there is another daughter that I did not know about,as she was at her mothers bedside when she died 1935.
To Jo,Thank you for these records as I do have some of them,apart from the School records.
You have opened up some more queries that I will have to try and solve.But thats the nature of the beast is it not.

I don't know if this would help or if it is merely a red herring - A Sarah Faulkner's birth is registered in 1885 as a child of Mary and Henry Faulkner but there is also a Sarah Faulkner who died aged 1 day in 1885 - could this be your Sarah? Do you know if she survived to adulthood?

The only records I could find on a Sarah FAULKNER in Taranaki is below:
Maybe this school was a Girls boarding school ? Maybe John is Henry's
Brother who was the Guardian at the time Sarah was enrolled?
The only other Sarah FAULKNER I could find was in the Wairarapa

You mentioned Sarah was born in 1885, This would mean Sarah should
have shown in the 1905 NZ Electoral Roll, as she would hae been 20 yrs
old. As there was no Sarah Faulkners in NZ in 1905 you could also
assume she married between the age of 16-20 (1900-1905).

Have you looked for the deaths of the parents, to see what they can tell you?

Try PapersPast (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/) for newspaper notices.

Or Archway (http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the online index for Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) for probates, which may name names. You won't be able to see the contents of the file(s) online, but once you've found them there you'll be able to visit the office where they're being held and view them for free. Or ask a friend to visit if you can't get there - ask here if you need help, and someone may be able to do that for you. Or pay Archives to photocopy it and send it to you for a fee.

Then again, take another look at BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/). There are only two Sarah FAULKNERs listed in the marriage indexes there, one in 1899 (when she would have been only 13 or 14 years old, which is unlikely).

That leaves Edith Sarah FAULKNER who married Leslie William RUDDLE in 1920 (registration 1920/10431). Don't be put off by your Sarah not having the first name of Edith - it might have been changed after her birth was registered. See what you can find online (eg PapersPast, online family trees) before spending any money.

You can purchase copies of registrations on that site. Be sure to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. (I explain why at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/20...)

If you don't want to order online, or are dealing with more recent events that aren't on the historical site and don't have an iGovt registration, you can order via ordinary mail - go to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/), click on the link "Family History Records" down the left-hand side, then click on the link "Request death, marriage, civil union, and name change certificates". Scroll down the page to "Post your application form..." and click on the link "Request for a Certificate (BDM 93 D, M, C, or N". Now you're at http://www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Birth... where you can choose the appropriate form, download it, print it, fill it in and send it off with your payment.

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) enquire at their Certificates Collection before making purchases at BDM. If they're holding what you're looking for, it is much cheaper.

His name was Alfred . According to the website

settled in Petone after emigrating from Australia, studied for his chemistry exams and qualified as a pharmacist.

"He married a Wanganui woman who was a Murray - the Murray's ran steel foundries in Wanganui.

"In 1892, he started up the Sykes chemist shop in Devon Street. As that business prospered, he moved into 76 King St, as a wholesale manufacturing chemist. The first part, where the Operatic Society Costume Hire is, was his first factory.

The accommodation in both windows is occupied by supplies of Sykes's drench ready for the market, specimen cardboard boxes (made by J. Hooker and Co.) in which it is packed for retail custom, the wooden boxes (made by the Sash and Door Co.) in which it is consigned to the wholesale people. Even the paper and string used in packing are colonial manufactured. Specimens of an interesting booklet just issued by Mr Sykes and printed at the Herald Office are also shown.

A colonist of nearly 70 years' standing, Mr. Alexander Muir, died the other day at Mangere, in his-88th year. Mr. Muir, who was born near Glasgow, Scotland, arrived in New Zealand with his parents in tho ship Duchess of Argyle, in 1842. His first work in New Zealand was at the copper mine on Kawau Island. After his return to Auckland he was appointed manager of the Clanricarde Hotel, but three years' later engaged in farming for Messrs Brown, Campbell and Co. Later he became a dealer in horses, and carried on the business until the end of the Maori war. Mr. Muir was very successful in all his enterprises. He was recognised as a good judge of horsgs and cattle, and acted in that capacity for many years at the agricultural and pastoral shows at Auckland and "Waikato.
