Hi Barbara,

There is a probate record for Adam Hunter Groat at Archives NZ. See http://archway.archives.govt.nz/

Early newspapers record the event. "Colonist" 3 January, 1871, states a crew member of the cutter, Dawn, fell overboard and drowned. The cutter was moored in the Manawatu river. "The Evening Post", 20 December, 1870, also mentions the event, but doesn't name the victim. These papers are available on line at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ I searched using the terms "drowned" and "Manawatu" within the months of December, January, 1870/71.

Re: Burial of those who died on board immigrant ships?

My understanding is that they were buried at sea, as there would have been no means of preserving bodies. People were examined by doctors prior to embarkation in order to reduce the risk of epidemics, but even so, diseases such as scarlet fever decimated some ships. There were no antibiotics, conditions would have been crowded and the transmission of disease was not well understood. Food was not always the best for those in steerage, so diarrhoea was often a problem, especially amongst young children. Bodies were often buried within hours of death, sometimes with only the parents present. I have heard that in seas where sharks were prevalent, such burials generally took place prior to day break to minimize potential distress of relatives. Migration wasn't without its hazards! You may be interested in a book about life on the migrant ships, "Over the Mountains of the Sea", by David Hastings, published 2006 by Auckland University Press.

Using the name "Indian Queen" a search of the NZ database of old newspapers, PapersPast, produced an article with log details of that particular voyage of the Indian Queen. See Daily Southern Cross, 17 February 1857 at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

You will find other news items in the same database regarding the "Indian Queen" - apparently many passengers travelled on promisory notes that they would be employed as soon as they arrived - this money being used to repay their fares. These promises were not necessarily honoured. I have found one reference in the Petone Settlers' Museum database which states all 405 passengers were "assisted" immigrants.

There are also about 100 references to "Ollerenshaw" in the PapersPast database.

The Ollerenshaws were said to have sailed from Liverpool on the Indian Queen, 1 Nov. 1856, arriving at Wellington 30 Jan. 1857. They had a daughter, Hannah Ollerenshaw, who was born in the spring of 1854, Stockport, Cheshire, UK. I have not found a UK death record for her or any record in NZ. Around 20 children died of measles on that voyage and I suspect Hannah was a victim. Would the deceased have been buried at sea or would they have been buried at Wellington upon arrival. Apparently no actual manifest survives of this voyage and no accounting that I have found mentions the Ollerenshaw family but I think that is because they came with their own means and did not owe the government as many others did.

Arthur James Abbott married Coraline Elsie Maud Neilson in 1907.

I found an Arthur Abbott arriving in New Zealand aged 5 in 1874 with his parents and six siblings. This could be him. His father (Henry) is listed as a Navvy from Warwick in England. A Navvy is someone who builds railways. If this turns out to be your gg grandfather, I can send the ship's immigration log if you want it.

Tony in Christchurch

I am very new to family research
My grandfather was Horace James Abbott. He was apparently born around 1907 in Wellington. He worked as a plumber at A&T Burt in Wellington NZ. He married my grandmother Ivy Jones and he died in Wellington NZ in 1963.
All we have to go on with his family is that his mother was Coral, Coraline, or Carol Brown(e).
He is proving very hard to research.
Its almost like he did not exist prior to his marriage.
Any clues would be most welcome.

Hi:

I’m researching Harry Rea and his wife Sarah (Sadie).

Harry b.1874 was the son of John & Elizabeth Rea living at Stapleford Nottingham England in 1881 and the family moved to New Zealand after that date.
There was a James HARDIE who died in NZ on 29 June 1912, though the age given is 68yrs, however this information is only as reliable as the person supplying it.

1912/1533	Hardie	James	68Y

You can search for historical NZ BDMs at this website:
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/home/

There are date limitations which vary depending on what you are looking for, see the FAQs for further info.

That James HARDIE is buried at Karori Cemetery in Wellington. This is a link to his burial entry:
http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/cemeteries/search/det...

It gives his occupation as "Valuer". The inscription on his headstone reads:
STTMO James HARDIE b Simpirn, Berwickshire,
Scotland 26 Oct 1842 d Wellington 29 Jun 1912. Also
Jessie bw of the above b Strathhaven, Scotland 22 Dec
1849 d at Karori 7 May 1931.
(Sourced from NZSG Cemetery Records collection)

There is a NZ marriage for a James HARDIE to a Jessie WILSON:
1870/8580	Jessie	Wilson	James	Hardie

The other important website for NZ Research is PapersPast which has historic NZ papers online and searchable (for FREE!).
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast

This is his death notice:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&...--

The death notice suggests they were living in Dunedin prior to moving to Wellington.

On BDM I have found 7 possible children for this couple:
1880/7093	Hardie	Robert James Scott	/Jessie	/James
1885/8612	Hardie	Anges Wight	/Jessie	/James
1877/10519	Hardie	Jessie Wilson	/Jessie	/James
1886/13268	Hardie	Vallance Cochrane	/Jessie	/James
1883/9108	Hardie	Alexander St Ninian	/Jessie	/James
1872/35154	Hardie	Catherine Jane	/Jessie	/James
1874/22333	Hardie	Isabel Josephine	/Jessie	/James
George married Eileen Beryl JOHNSON in 1951. Eileen died in 1965. This is her death registration:
1965/38065	Worthington	Eileen Beryl	36Y

Eileen was cremated at Purewa in Auckland. This is a link to the online search entry:
http://www.purewa.co.nz/details.asp?id=56573&type=Cremat...

The funeral directors who dealt with Eileen's death are still in operation, it might be worth sending them an email to see if they can provide any further info, such as a death notice:
http://www.fountainsfunerals.co.nz/aboutus.htm

This is the link for the NZ Whitepages online. If you search WORTHINGTON in Auckland, you will find an entry that matches the initials you are after:
http://whitepages.co.nz/
Hi all, I don't know how easy this is or what information may be available but I am following up on a lead that a person I am researching (James Hardie, born c.1840 at Swinton, Berwickshire, Scotland) died in Wellington 29th June 1912 (aged 72).

I have never encountered NZ records before, is there any way of confirming / eliminating this line of enquiry?

Any advice or pointers will be much appreciated,

Thanks and regards, Steve

Possible Look Up?

Hi, I was wondering whether someone could help me.
As I don't have the full worldwide membership, I am unable to trace one of my ancestors on his arrival to Wellington.

I have attached the record that I have gathered from my research.
His name is: Mr George Eric Worthington (however, on the record transcription, they had put Erie instead of Eric) so might come under that.
He was 23 years old when he left, and did not travel with any family members. He is originally from Liverpool, Wavertree to be precise. He left from Southampton on the 3rd August 1950.

He has never returned to the UK, and is still alive today. I am unaware as to whereabouts he lives. I also believe that he has been married twice. Once to a lady called Eileen, surname unknown and his new wife we were not aware of. A family member told us that he is now a widower.

If anybody could help me on locating George, it would be a real help. I would like to know when he arrived into port and possibly where he lives now if the search is not too hard!

Thanks!
Becky Newett

I have not had any luck finding the family in Wellington, apart from one reference to Leonard passing a music exam:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&...--

To get ages, I found the family in the 1911 UK Census. Listed with the family was another son, George Robert NORTON, who was 3 months old at the time of the census. However he didn't appear on the passenger list for the Arawa that his mother & brother came out on.

The first record I can find of the family is in Hamilton:

Electoral Rolls 1925, 1928 & 1935 - Hamilton electorate:
Norton, Albert, Tramway Rd, Claudelands, painter
Norton, Annie, Tramway Rd, Claudelands, married

1935 is the first year that Leonard appears on the rolls.
He appears in the Raglan electoral roll as follows:
Norton, Leonard Albert, Paterangi, Ohaupo, farm hand

Also in Raglan is the following:
Norton, George Robert, Mill Rd, Ohaupo, farm labourer

Leonard then appears in the 1935 Hamilton Electorate Supplementary roll as a joiner living with this parents.

The 1938 Hamilton electoral roll has the family back living together in Tramway Road, Albert is a painter, Leonard a joiner and George is a painter.

In 1939, Leonard married Phyllis Helen LAMBERT (folio 10474)

The 1946 electoral Piako roll is interesting (same house, just an electorate boundary change). The family are at Tramway Road as follows:
Albert - painter
Annie - married
George Robert - painter
Leonard Albert - joiner
Phyllis Helen - married
Stanley - moulder

Now just who Stanley is, I'm not sure? Maybe they had another child after their arrival in NZ? The rolls are exactly the same in 1949.

George Robert does not appear to have married. He died in 1952 and was buried at Hamilton East cemetery.

http://www.hamilton.co.nz/our-services/do-it-online/cemetery...

(Have some further info but have to go - will post again later)

I'm not sure if they were completely separate or if the Hill St one was relocated to the Upper Hutt site.

Article and Photos from the Upper Hutt one here:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&...--
As the orphanage was run by the Sisters of Mercy it may be the best to contact them to find out where their archives might be located. The Sisters of Mercy still have a convent in Hill Street. The national body also has a facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/mercynz

Otherwise, try contacting the Catholic Archives for Wellington:
http://www.catholic.org.nz/about/dsp-organisations.cfm?loadr...

I know that the Wellington Archives were being managed by a Mercy Sister a couple of years ago, and this may still be the case.

I am trying to find information about St Joseph's orphanage Hill St, Wellington about 1900 -1905. Mother Borgia a Mercy sister was in charge. I have the article about the laying of the foundation stone from papers past 1891. And a digital military file from Archives NZ, for JAMES WALSH SA war that contains a letter from his sister MAY WALSH which refers to the orphanage. ROSE and ELIZABETH WALSH attended after the death of their father, MARTIN WALSH of Palmerston North on the 16th Oct 1900.
Looking for any additional information - pictures, accounts, records. Many thanks for reading.

Thanks for your reply, sorry for delay in returning to you.

I know that Andrew was a Green Grocer or Fruiterer in the UK but I dont know what occupation John Compton followed.
Andrews children who sailed witth him were, Selina b.1847.
Mary Gibson Matilda b.1850 Eliza.Harriet b.1852.
One stayed behind was Andrew Charles b.1854 One child b.1856 in NZ was Charles Gibson.

We do have some evidence of them being in the UK around 1865 as for some reason Selina was being Baptised in St Giles Camberwell aged 18.

I believe the Andrew Brown living on Porirua Road may have been a cousin.
I might also add Andrews father also Andrew
came to NZ in 1839 and returned to UK 1854, he died soon after returning from Cholera.
He took at least 2 children that I know of to NZ with him David b.1823 and John b.1820, there may have been more.
He was a widower

Thank you for your time
Do you have any idea what occupation Andrew BROWN or John COMPTON might have undertaken?

I have found an Andrew BROWN on the Jury lists for 1857, 1858, 1859, occupation given as a "licensed victualler", residing on Lambton Quay.

There is also an Andrew BROWN, a labourer, living on Porirua Road - he appears in the 1856 - 1859.

There is also entries for 1856-1859 for a John COMPTON, carpenter, living on Lambton Quay.

Do any of these sound likely matches for your men?

If I have the right marriage, Selina BROWN married John COX in the UK in the Mar Qtr 1871.

Was the son born in Wellington named Charles Gibson BROWN? If so, then he was born in 1856.

Do you have any other information about the family's time in NZ which would help narrow the timeframe down?

I wonder if there is anyone who can help me with my research into the Brown side of my family.
My 2nd Gt Grandfather left for New Zealand in Oct 1854 on the Royal Stuart. Taking with him 3 daughters, Selina, Matilda & Eliza But not his wife Harriet Compton or a son Andrew.
Also on board was his Brother-in-Law John Compton and 2 of his sons Andrew and Charles.
Harriet may have sailed later as there was a son born in Wellington. BUT they all came back to the UK, on unknown date and that is what I am trying to find out.
They dont appear on the 1861c in the uk but are on the 1871c and are all using the surname Grant? Except for Selina who is married to a John Cox.
If anyone can help or even tell me where I could look to find the information I need I would be most grateful.
Rita (Cox) Woodcock

Hi Lorraine, you may have seen my response to Mike recently with regard to Seear family. Looks like you may have more information about them. I wonder if we can swap information? e.g. I have the passenger list for William and Susan aboard the Lady Nugent but no sign of the 16-month-old son you mention. Is this baby George Thomas Seear?

Maidin-sent you a response yesterday, but Ancestry was playing up so if you got yesterdays, this is just a "repeat". Unfortunately I know no more about the Seears than was posted by me in 2008 (presume you saw that); I had thought that my "vanished" Samuel Parker, also a pianoforte maker, may have emigrated with his landlord, Mr. Seear.

But no, I have subsequently found him and his marriage, in London; he died shortly after the marriage so no descendants!

Regards,

Mike Parker.

hi Mike,
I am looking at the Seear family who emigrated to newly-founded Port Nicholson,NZ arriving as previously stated in this thread, aboard the Lady Nugent, 17 March, 1841. William James and his wife Susan Goulding. They may have sent their daughter Annie back to England to stay with the pianoforte-maker grandfather - that is my conclusion anyway. The family moved from NZ to Melbourne, arriving March, 1853 aboard 'Elizabeth' with children George, 12, Frederick, 7, Ann 9 (now apparently returned to family in NZ), Susan Jr, 4 and James, 1 . In 1855, William has a carter business in Prahran, Melbourne but was thrown from his cart and killed on 31 August that year in St Kilda. Anything sound familiar? I'd be interested in anything more on this family.
