The records of the London Missionary Society are held at the library of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

Some of these documents have been copied on microfilm by the Pacific Manuscript Bureau in Canberra.
http://asiapacific.anu.edu.au/pambu/

If you search on "London Missionary Society" you will see what has been microfilmed. The only baptismal records seem to be for Niue. The other records are relating to the organization itself and the European missionaries.

These Pambu films are held in various large University Libraries around the Pacific region.

In 1844 the London Missionary Society established Malua Theological College at the village of Malua on Upolu to educate local men to become village clergy for the rapidly growing mission with over 250 villages and 25,000 membership.

Perhaps Malua College, which still exists, and has a good library, may know where Samoan baptisms are, if they still exist.
Christine

If Tamuera and Maria were born in the 1850s anywhere in Samoa there will be no birth registrations for them. The official country of Samoa did not exist then. Samoan Government records do not start until after 1900.

The only registrations of any kind that might exist for them are baptismal records, probably LMS ones.
Christine

Hi, recently came across geneaology papers of my mom who grew up in Ta'u it refers to a Tuiaana, who married Fitiuta, who's father was named Paopao and she gave birth to a Gese and Tuilesa(F). Lefiti Mika married Tuilesa and birthed Pola & Pua'a Tunu. Pola married Sili? and gave birth to our great great grandmother Taea, and her sisters Fili and Falauea. Taea birthed our great grandmother Caroline, who's father was Scott - don't know if this is first or surnmae -still researching this myself, but believe he came from Western Samoa with Toaga Young. Don't know if this is the Tuiaana and Paopao that are related to you? Please let me know.

Talofa Manaia,

I have tried for well over a year now via phone AND email to obtain birth certificates for family members from the Vital Stats office in PagoPago. When speaking with Priscilla at the Vital Stats office via phone, I was told it would take time to obtain the records I needed since their records were "not yet computerized".

I was asked to scan and attach copies of my photo id (drivers license), a passport picture of myself and birth certificates for myself and my father verifying we were descendants/family of my grandfather whose b/cert I was trying to obtain.

My last communication with Priscilla was on May 25, 2010. I emailed Mike Sala of the same office on October 01, 2010 making yet another request. Mr. Sala copies his response to me on October 04, 2010 requesting a "Cinta" to look into it. Needless to say, I've heard nothing back from their office and won't hold my breath.

I made several calls to their office in February 2011 while I was in Western Samoa and couldn't get a decent connection. Any attempt to do much of anything related to American Samoa has been pretty frustrating.

Talofa OneSlickShoe:

If you absolutely cannot get to the Vital Records office in Pago Pago, AS, I suggest calling the Vital Records *again* and asking for the supervisor or someone "in charge".

In your most pleasant voice *possible* tell them what it is you are requesting, why, and that you are calling from NZ.

Be ready to FAX your ID and whatever they will request of you also. Please ask them how soon your transaction can be expedited.

Because when all is done they can FAX all documents to you at whatever address you have given. It has been done for me.

Be patient & kind also.

Manuia,
--Manaia
[manaiaalofa@yahoo.com]
