It is a Malayo-Polynesian language, but not a strictly Polynesian one ie one coming from the true Polynesian area. There are different vocabulary, different sounds,similar grammar, different history. The word MARAMA is an example. As far as I know this word does not exist in Tongan, Samoa, Maori or other Polynesian languages, or if it does, is not the common word, which would be some similar form to WAHINE, FAFINE, FEFINE.
