Because they had been to the vicar and was going to
be married.
The marriage has to be announced 3 times from the pulpit.
1.time 5 december 1909
2.time 19 december 1909
no 3 time .

Maybe they changed their minds - or - remember he was a widower-
so maybe there was problems with the probate after his
first wife.He had to show the vicar a certificate from
the probate court to get married.
