I recently found an old envelope that Lewis JOHNSON of Goodhue, Minnesota, USA received from Nakskov, Denmark in the mid-1800s. You can see the envelope on www.philgen.org
(search on JOHNSON, select the one with Nakskov and Goodhue, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page). According to an online family tree at Ancestry, Lewis JOHNSON was born 15 April 1838 in Lolland (date shown as April 1838 in the 1900 census). Nakskov is a city on the island of Lolland. According to the 1900 and 1920 US censuses, Lewis left Denamrk in 1857. Does someone have access to Nakskov census, parish, or similar records to see if Lewis was born in or near Nakskov in April 1838?
Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://www.philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=for...
The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy and have started the philgen website. I do not know if the letter that was in the envelope still exists.
Thank you for whatever help you can give me.
