Yes, you are right. I had found that on the map. When I re-read your post, I
realized you were speaking of the same area that I had inquired about. But it
seems that people from this area did not take on the town or village name for
a last name? as many people for Norway did use the farm name. One of the posters said there were no "Oens" in Denmark. I was hoping to find someone from that locality to give me a little feedback on the possibility. Thanks Kay

When you referred to "the area of Oens" (and picked Vejle Amt for your original posting), I was convinced that you already knew the Oens village in Ølsted Sogn, Hatting Herred, Vejle Amt.
How could you have picked the right county without knowing that?

Anyway, it was (and is) not my deliberate intention to be impolite. I was just trying to give a precise and short answer to a short question:-)

There is a place called Oens in Ølsted, Hatting, Vejle. Perhaps that is where your family originated?

Short answer: No

"Oens" is not a family name in Denmark (and never was).
Names like that, referring to a place, were used as unofficial suffixes to the standard patronyms. Some lived on as family names - some did not.

Illinois death records list a Carl Born born 19 October 1869 Jutland; is that your ancestor?

The transcribed 1880 census of Vejle County does not list anyone with surname Born.

I am looking for information about the parents of Hans Christian Hansen (~1850 Gauerslund, Vejle, Denmark) and Mætte Vilhelmsen (~1842 Gauerslund, Vejle, Denmark). They are the parents of Karen (1874) and Hans (1877) Hansen.

I keep getting hints that Hans Christian and Mætte came to the US, but it has their destination as Oregon. There isn't any other family in that part of the country, so I don't think that is the same couple.

Their daugher, Karen Hansen, did immigrate to the US in 1901 to Manistique, MI by way of Liverpool-Boston. She was married to Laust Frederik Hansen and was the mother of Edith and HC Hansen.

I don't have a handy Danish-English site for the old terms, which were often spelled differently back then.
Perhaps one of our Danish friends can help.

Although I think "Gerges" Marie was probably Simon's sister Inger Marie, it is plainly spelled Gerges in both this listing and the other Hamburg listing on Ancestry, which incidently lists Inger after Simon, without the Marie Andersen between them.

I came across my ancestor Simon Peter Jensen on the Hamburg Passenger Lists, Departure Date: 5 Apr 1883 to Adelaide, Australia and found a Gerges Marie Jensen on the same ship. I think she might be his sister.

I'm not sure if Marie Andersen sailed with them, I just found it odd that her name was between theres.

I haven't been able to find Simon Peter Jensen any information about him prior to arrving in Australia. Can anyone help me searching them on Danish databases?

I am able to find Simon Peter Jensen's marriage in Australia and the birth of two of his children and later in New Zealand but I can't seem to find any record of Gerges Marie Jensen or Marie Andersen in Australia.

Hans Nielsen died on 10 April 1880 and was buried on 15 Apr 1880 in Glud, opslag 112 nr 5. There is a note in the record but unfortunately I cannot read Danish.

I am the grt granddaughter of Niels Ditlev YTTING - the brother of Ester Louise. As you would already know there were also Pouline Marie, Ane Marie, Fritz Frederick & half brother Laurs Peter Frederik Carlsen.
Niels came out to Sth Australia in 1874 and then moved over to Western Aust. in 1901 with his young family. As well as having a lot of information on his life in Australia, I also have a bit on his family in Denmark, including some photos of Carl Friderich & Anne Marie with their young children. Perhaps you have photos also?
I have,(with the help of fellow researchers)managed to trace the family line back to 1725.
Can you let me know how far back you have gone with your research? Hopefully we can help each other with the exchange of information.

In the danish police records you find that Carl Sophus Charles Sundby was a sailor (styrmand).

1 nov 1902 he moved from Grenaa to Copenhagen to the adress Blegdamsvej 130.

1 may 1903 he moved to Trepkasgade 4 still in Copenhagen

1 may 1903 he moved to Nannasgade 4 still in Copenhagen

1 nov 1910 he moved to Aarhusgade 56 still in Copenhagen

1 nov 1912 he moved from Copenhagen.

Would be interested to hear from anyone who knows anything about this HANSEN family with links to Herning, Jutland and to Vejle.

My great aunt was Edith Godfrey BRADLEY, b. 1892 Lancashire UK. Her parents were Anthony BRADLEY and Mary Ann (nee MURPHY). In the 1901 England census Edith was aged 9 and living at 18 Gladstone Road, West Derby, Liverpool. She had 3 siblings, Alice, Thomas and James.

Edith married Valdemar HANSEN on 15 Apr 1915 in Cardiff, Wales. Valdemar HANSEN was b. abt 1894 and was a Marconi ship radio operator. His father in turn was also called Valdemar and was a railway inspector (in Denmark).

Edith and Valdemar HANSEN had two children, a son James William HANSEN (would this be Jakob Vilhelm in Danish?) and a daughter Valborg Dagmar HANSEN. Valborg Dagmar was born 18 Jul 1916 in West Derby Lancashire England but died in 1924. The family returned to live in Denmark but divorced and Edith returned to England. James and his father stayed in Denmark and went on to become a captain in the Danish navy. Edith remarried in England to Robert John HADDOCK. She was widowed in 1950 and died in 1979. In her Will dated 1977 she left her estate to both her some James William HANSEN but also named her grandson Paul Gulberg HANSEN and gave addresses in Denmark.

With the research you have done, you have helped us on the way to solving on longtime mystery about the child Valdemar, born in Brooklyn in 1892. On the 1901 census of Grenaa, Randers, Denmark, Valdemar Rasmussen is living with Ernstine's mother, Ane Sophie Rasmussen (married name Mikkelsen). We have been puzzled over his origins, and what happened to him after 1901, but now we know his location in 1906. We thank you very much!

Just a couple more little tidbits:

Found them on the Copenhagen 1911 census (Aarhusgade op 102)
The family consisted of:
Charles Sundby b. Sept 8 1869 in Copenhagen
Ernstine Elisabet b. Apr 8 1866 in Grenaa
(moved into parish 1900 from Hull)
Alis Else b. Aug 22 1896 in Hull
Helga Sofie Karla b. Jul 14 1900 in Copenhagen (bapt. record Skt Johannes, op 41, says-I think- that Charles and Ernstine Elisabet Mikkelsen were married in St Paul's in Hull on Mar 20 1900)
Charles Thor Emil b. Nov 2 1903 in Copenhagen (bapt. record -Nazaret op 154- also notes parents wed in "parish Church 20 Mar 1900")

Also found them on the 1906 census (Trepkasgade op 52)
This only differences on this one were that Charles is not listed with the family (he is however listed on the 'Tillaegsliste' as having gone to England), and there is another son listed - Valdemar b. Aug 25 1892 in Brooklyn (?? that's what it looks like....)

Just out of curiosity I took a look at the English marriage records and found an entry for 'Charles Carl S Sundby' and 'Elizabath Ernstine ' married in Yorkshire East Riding in Mar 1900. (Vol 9d, pg 259)

Not descendants, but some little bits and pieces for you re Charles-
Helga Sundby's 1925 passenger record gave her father as Charles Sundby living at Haraldsgade 2 in Vejle. Found him at that address on the 1925 census. He is listed as 'Carl Sophus Charles Sunby' born Sept 8 1869 in Dragor (Kobenhavn). Also in that household were Maren Hansine Kirstin born May 21 1868 in Barrit (2nd wife?) and Oda Else, born Aug 31 1919 in Aarhus. (I did look at Oda's birth record - she was born to unmarried Thora Marie Moller and adopted by Carl Sophus Charles Sundby and Maren Johanne Kirstine Hansine nee Hansen. And I checked Maren's birth record - 'Maren Johanne Kirstine Hansine Hansen' is her correct name.

Found a birth record for 'Carl Sophus Charles Sundby in the Skt Johannes (Kobenhavn) parish record. Born Sept 8 1869 to Jakob Helge Sundby and Marie Sophie nee Nielsen.
And found his family on the 1880 Census for Aagade, Kobenhavn

Sofie Marie f. Nielsen 37 Hans kone b. Gladsaxe, København
Charles Sofus Sundby 10 Deres søn b. København
Thor Sundby 9 Deres søn b. København

Looking for descendants of Charles Sundby and wife Ernstine (Mikkelsen)Sundby. We don't have any dates on Charles, but we know that Ernstine was born in Grenaa, Denmark on 28 April 1865 and died in Vejle 17 November 1913. They had three known children: Alice b. 1896 Helga b. 1902, and Charles (birthdate unknown). Alice and Helga immigrated to the U.S.--Alice in 1914 and Helga in 1925. Charles, perhaps, stayed in Denmark(?).

Any assistance would be appreciated.
