San Juan Islander newspaper 22 November 1900
"Thos Delaney, brother of Ed Delaney, of this place and well known here, helped to save two men from drowning at the mouth of the Duwamish river, Seattle, Saturday afternoon. They were fishermen and with two others were approaching their usual landing place in a small sail boat when a squall capsized the boat and threw the four men into the ice cold water. Mr. Delaney, who is a United States customs inspector, was surveying a vessel near by and hearing their cries immediately started to their rescue in a small boat, with a young man whose name is not reported. They and Arnold Bern, of Port Blakeley, who went out in a small boat alone, succeeded in saving two of the men, but the other two sank before the rescuing party reached them."
