Carl Otto Bern's death certificate and/or marriage certificates may tell his birthplace, day-month-year of birth, and parents' names. Do you have those? The 1900 census should tell his month-year of birth and year of immigration. (1920 census says 1884, but this can vary)

Here's a discussion about a William Bern - Sofie Rasmusdatter - Rasmus born 05 March 1809 in Troense and baptised at Bregninge Kirke, Sunds, Svendborg, Denmark. William was a matros på dansk kanonbåd (seaman).
