Phoenix Arizona May 13 1900
As I have now decided to stay
in this place for a year I hereby
will send you a few words in order to tell
you that I have bought myself
a small place. It is in a desert as
they call it here. There is 15 miles
to the nearest neighbor. I have what
they in Denmark call an inn. I have
now owned it for 4 days and made
about 80 kroner. It is from travelers.
There are many mines and many, who
go up there, pass by here. I’m selling
water. It costs 2 kroner to water 4
horses. The well is 160 feet
deep and we are pulling the water up
with a horse. The climate is very good
for someone with bad lungs. I have
a man with me who also is ??.
We are cooking for the travellers and have 7 beds.
If I cannot live here then there
are no place in the world where i
can live. I had almost decided
to come home this summer, but…
… now it will not come off for another year. If
I don’t feel better in a year then I think
I will come. I recently sent you a letter
containing 5 Dollars and I hope you have recieved it,
and I also hope that my old father
feels better. Please, don’t worry about
anything for I will help you.
Our Lord has managed it such
for me that i have some money. Maybe
he gave them to me so I can help you.
I now send you 5 dollars? again and
hope it will do you good.
Do not let anybody know that I am sending
you letters with money for somebody might steal them.
How much will it cost you to live
a month. Do you think ?? you not Father[?]
but let me know if you need [more] and
even before you need them as it takes a
long time for me to get them to you but since
you do not feel strong you should not work. This
is all from your son.
The address is as usual.
