She traveled over on a steamer by herself at age 16 on a ticket sent by her uncle, to escape the Finnish-Russo war. She came to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and stayed in Ishpeming. Her first husband was Mathew Kivikko, who died at an early age from liver cancer. My mother remembers a still up in the attic during prohibition.
