I know the von was dropped during the uprising years of Russia. It was a sign of nobility, (and there were many of them) however, the Clifford name was British and likely that name was not used. (the v is small)
The family, like many others would have been in turmoil and there were literally thousands fleeing the country coming out through whichever way they could so I do thank you most sincerely for trying to find my family. This was a story told to me as a child, but is by no means a certainty - it's just they are so elusive - no records of their coming into the country Finland or UK. I was told so many stories, but most have proved true that I thought I would try the Finnish site for any help.
One lucky story that has come down through the Russian family (only just found them) is that they were escorted from Moscow by the Clifford family, but how they travelled and reached the UK and on what dates is uncertain.
