Nonni,

You are correct in thinking that Margrét Jónsdóttir's parents were Jón "skörsi" Jónsson and Kristiín Jónsdóttir.

Here is as complete a list of their children (Margrét and her siblings) that I have been able to assemble:

Gunnlaugur Sveinbjörn Jónsson - b. 17 Dec 1858.

Margrét Jónsdóttir - b. 1860; christened 28 June 1860 (at Sauðanes í Norður-Þingeyjarsýsla); d. 6 Aug 1893 at sea.

Jón Jónsson - b. 12 Jun 1861; d. 20 Jan 1862.

Árni Jónsson - b. 6 May 1862; christened and died the same day.

Sigurður Jónsson - b. 1 Sep 1862 (?).

Guðjón Jónsson Vopnfjörð - b. 20 Mar 1864; d. 17 Jan 1951. (Guðjón emigrated to Canada, homesteading near Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, but he returned to Iceland after a couple of years. His branch of the family has the largest number of descendants by far.)

María Jónsdóttir - b. 18 Sep 1865; d. 24 Oct 1865.

Karl Friðrik Jónsson - b. 6 May 1867; d. 1913.

Oddur Jónsson - b. 19 Dec 1869.

Jón Ólafur Jónsson - b. 21 Apr 1872; d. 14 Jun 1872.

Sveinn Jónsson Vopnfjörð - b. 16 Aug 1873; d. 1958. (He was a seaman at Bolungarvík before eventually relocating to Reykjavík.)

Jakob Jónsson Vopnfjörð - b. 13 Apr 1875; d. 18 May 1951. (Jakob emigrated to Canada in 1900, settling first at Húsavík, Mantoba. He relocated to St. James, a suburb of Winnipeg, sometime between 1908 and 1910; Around 1930, he moved to Cloverdale, British Columbia, before settling in Blaine, Washington, U.S.A. in 1937, where he remained until his death. He married Dagbjört Elíasdóttir Kjærnested.)

Þórunn Oddný Jónsdóttir - b. 1879; d. 1958.

Fríða Jónsdóttir - dates unknown.

Kristín Jónsdóttir also had a son (a half-brother to Margrét and her siblings) with her first husband, Sveinn Ingjáldsson, who died during their first year of marriage:

Jósep Sveinsson - b. 21 Mar 1856.

I am the great-grandson of Jakob Jónsson Vopnfjörð through his daughter Ásrún and her son Victor Jonasson.

Stefan Jonasson

Vigfús Hansson-Jónsson -b. about 1819 Ingjaldshólssókn

Can anyone help with information on Vigfús Hansson, please.
In the 1870 census he was 51, living with Sigurðrif Guðbrandsdóttir at "Steingrímsb. þurrabúð, Ingjaldshólssókn".

However, various family member obituaries I have viewed list his 'last name' as: Jónssyni, Hannesson, Jónsson or Hansson. He was a fisherman and apparently drowned; probably between October 1875 and July 1876. The family was probably in the Hjardarholt area at the time.

Given the differing 'last name' possibilities and only a calculated date of birth in 1819; I have not been able to determine his parentage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, there cannot have been many legless men named Hanson with no legs living in that area around that time, so it is most probably the same man. If there is anything specific you are looking for regarding him, just let me know.

Hello
I'm trying to piece a similar puzzle as well. My mother a (Hanson) told me the same story as well. That this man was her great or great great grandfather. Who had no legs. Had a very strong upper body and was Icelandic. He also saved a mans life. And she was told that we are related to Eric the red. Her father told her these stories. Her grandfather lived in Bellingham. Married in or near birch bay. WA.
would love to piece this puzzle. Also attended an Icelandic church. Have ties to Canada.

Yes, it seems they were twins - I double-checked this in the 1910 census (available online at manntal.is), as that is the first census that lists date of birth, (not just age in years), and yes, they have the same date of birth there.

no, that would be something like "hans barn" (his child)

This is probably his niece - the daughter of his brother Sigurður Sigurðsson, who was married to Guðrún Þorvaldsdóttir. They are at Hólkot at the time of the 1840 census, but their daughter, Sigríður, is not with her parents at the time.

it means a child taken into the household - the child might or might not be related to the rest of the people living there - it could be a niece, or a more distantly related relative, or totally unrelated person - the word alone does not tell you anything.

niðursetningur can mean something like a "ward of the county", basically an individual that cannot support him/herself, and is financially supported by the county - a typical case would be a young orphan, or a child the parents are not able to care for. The "niðursetningur" is placed at one of the farms of the county and the farmer receives a small subsidy to cover the cost - sometimes there was a kind of an auction - the farmer willing to accept the "niðursetningur" for the smallest amount of money would get him/her.

Her mother was Ingibjörg Sigurðardóttir, born May 5th 1858 (daughter of Sigurður Sigurðsson (who also emigrated and settled in Argyle) and Margrét Egilsdóttir), died December 13th 1928

Her father was Böðvar Gíslason Laxdal, both October 20th 1853 (son of Gísli Steindórsson and Jóhanna Ólafsdóttir), died June 24th 1942.

They (and their ancestors for many generations back) lived in the Dalasýsla region in the western part of Iceland. They emigrated in 1883 from a farm called Leiðólfsstaðir.

Their ancestry is pretty well known - in the Islendingabok database some of branches of their family tree go back 30 generations or so to the settlement of Iceland in the 9th century.

Most of the convenient sources are only available in Icelandic, unfortunately - this includes the books "Dalamenn". If you want to trace the ancestry, you can fins dome information online at http://www.manntal.is (the 19th century censuses) but the church records are not available online.

I am attaching two files, which show the names of the ancestors of Böðvar and Ingibjörg for the first few generations.

Check out the 1901 Canada census for Manitoba. They were living in Winnipeg at that time.

Manitoba Vitals Stats online will give you a birth record for Ingveldur Laxdal. You can order the full record and it will give the parents names and where they came from. Her mother was Ingibjörg Sigurdardóttir.

Also,Manitoba Vital Stats will show a marriage registration for a Böðvar Gislason Laxdal and Ingibjörg Sigurðardóttir 10 Jan 1885. Ordering that full form from Vital Stats will give you more information.

Laxdal is not normally a birth name in Iceland. It is an adopted name taken from the area of Iceland that they came from. Laxádalshreppur.

Ingibjörg Sigurðardóttir was born May 1858, at Leiðolfsstaðir, Laxárdal. She died in Winnipeg, 13 Dec 1928.

Boðvar Gíslason Laxdal, was born 20 Oct 1853 at Neðri-Brekku and died in Winnipeg, 24 Jun 1942

The 1901, 06, 11 census are online and indexible by surname.

Now perhaps someone else will provide more complete ancestral information.

Good hunting.

Her husband, Einar, had died by the time her daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Olafur Einarson, left Iceland for America and so she accompanied them to America in 1876.
They lived for awhile at Sandy Bar, Manitoba and also at Hallson, North Dakota, before moving to Section 28 in South Olga township in 1881.
When her son-in-law, filed on a claim in that year, she also filed on an adjoining claim. She continued to live with the Einarsons until her death in 1899.
Hallgrimur Hallgrimson & family

Hallgrimur Hallgrimson Family
Hallgrimur and Joahnna Hallgrimson lived on the northern section of Iceland on a farm named "Holl". They were a prosperous young family of farmers and had three sons: Peter, Halldan and Ingvaldur (Walter).
In the mid-1870's the climatic conditions in that part of the world changed and summers were very cold. The crops didn't mature and had to be used for feed. The winters were extremely severe and the fishing boats froze into the water so there was no food or income fra the sea. This condition continued for three to four years forcing many fra that part of Iceland to migrate to America.
Hallgrimur and Johanna packed up and set sail fra the port of Akureyri in the spring of 1882. They had with them their 3 sons and Hallgrimur's sister. While on board the ship, their youngest son became sick and died. He was buried at sea.
Upon arrival in the new world the family headed for North Dakota to the Gardar area. They homestead 160 acres on the east edge of Cavlier County. Hallgrimur's sister, married a Mr Gislasson and lived east of them in Pembina county, ND.
On Nov 28 1882, a son Walter was born. He was named after the little boy who had died at sea. In the following years the hallgrimsons became charter members of the Incelandic Lutheran Church at Gardar.
Hallgrimur and Johanna were the parents of seven children: 6 boys and 1 girl. They were:
Pete Hallgrimson
Dan Hallgrimson
Walter Hallgrimson
Johann Hallgrimson
Jon Hallgrimson
Siggi Hallgrimson
Sigrun Hallgrimson

Tragedy struck in the year 1893 when both parents died within 6 months, Johanna of pneumonia and Hallgrimur of a heart attack. The good people of the area, relatives and friends, opened their hearts and homes to the seven orphans. The only girl, Sigrun was adopted by a family near Mountain. She died at 16 years of age. Thought tey were separated at an early age, the devotion of the brothers was beautiful to witness. They always referred to each other as brother, "Joe" or brother "John". They each had the same warm-hearted and generous nature and were always ready to share their worldly goods and homes with anyone less fortunate.

--page 335: A Century of Area History, 1882-1982, Milton, North Dakota
*NOTE: i am not related to the above persons - just thought i would share this bio with relatives/descendants in their research.
We need some more information to be able to help.

"Villa/Vella" cannot have been her original Icelandic name - it might have been a nickname or a name she adopted after emigration, but it does not help in tracking her down in Icelandic records. Same applies to "Johnson" - it is not her original name, which would be found in Icelandic records, so the name is of no use at all.

Please try to dig up as much as possible of following bits of information:

When was she born?
Where did she live in Canada?
When/where did she die?
When did she marry (and who was her husband)?
Hello. I hope I did not ask for too much. If possible I would like to learn more about Einar Johannsson, born in 1930. Date of birth and who he married and what children he had along with their dates of birth and their children.

Again, if it is not asking too much. I would also like to learn more about Gudmundur Johannsson's brothers and sister. Dates of birth, who they married and what children they may have had with birth dates.

I apologize if I am being presumptuous.

Whoa. Thank you so much frisk167. The ancestry chart you attached is fantastic! I had no idea I could get that kind of information via this message board. I have become a bit obsessed with discovering more about my ancestry since becoming an ancestry.com member. I have also always been intrigued by Iceland and my ancestors there. And the idea of perhaps having living relatives is exciting!

In my perfect world I would like to have an Icelandic family Tree that goes back as far as possible (Ingolfur Arnarson perhaps :). Including all the birth dates and information about where they were born and where they lived. For starters, knowing more about my half uncle Einar and his descendants would be nice. Also learning about my grand uncles and aunts is great too.

Wow. I guess I am overwhelmed with the possiblity of having access to all this information.

frisk167, If you don't mind telling me...where are you from? I am assuming you are Icelandic. Thank you again and again.

Well, what would you like to know?

I am attaching a chart showing the names of the first few generations of your ancestors, but of course the tree goes much, much longer back.

If you are looking for Icelandic relatives, that is pretty easy too - Guðmundur had one son, Einar, here in Iceland in 1930, and there are quite a few descendants there - those cousins would be your closest relatives.

Also, Guðmundur had three brothers and one sister and they all had children and grandchildren in Iceland.

The information is easy to find...the question is just what you want to know.

My name is Karen Elizabeth Ward and I recently started a family tree with ancestry.com. I have been able to discover quite a bit about my Irish ancestors. Going back 5 or 6 generations. But my problem is finding much about my Russian and Icelandic heritage. My mother is Diana Sandra Johannsson, Born in April/1945. Her father immigrated from Iceland in 1929. His name was Gudmundur Johannsson, born Dec 18, 1945. He married Francis Katz after immigration. He was a fisherman (surprise). His mother's name was Thuridur Sigmundsdottir (please forgive my spelling). Father was Johann (obviously :). That is all I know. Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much. KW
