Surnames: Gylys
I'll bet the real Lithuanian surname is Gylys, pronounced "gil-lease" with the accent on the second syllable. With Eastern European surnames, anything is possible and I recommend a broad search and stay open for possibilities. Pennsylvania mining was many times a brief stopping place for Lithuanians from 1890-1914. If you haven't obtained his citizenship paperwork, that's where I would start to narrow down the emigration part.
