No, this is a different Nils A. My Nils A. Johnson settled in Brooklyn, NY. His birthday was 3 Aug 1863 per his death certificate, which I have. He is listed in the 1900 US Census as having arrived in 1880. (Much of the 1880 and part of the 1890 census was destroyed by fire). In the 1910 Census, he is listed as having arrived in 1890, but an unknown person has added a note changing it to 1880. In the 1920 Census, it is listed as 1884. In the 1915 New York State Census, he is listed as having been in the US for thirty years, making the arrival date 1885. According to the 1910 Census, he married Marie Carlson (from Fredriksstad, Norway)in 1890. He was naturalized in 1891. There is an online record for a marriage certificate for a Nils Johanson for 23 Apr 1890 to Karoline Karlsen. I have a Digitalarkivet record for Marie his wife (as Caroline M. Carlson) that is definitively she. Only a trip to the New York City Municipal Archives will verify whether Karoline is the same as Caroline Marie, which I will do after all transit is running (hurricane Sandy - I live just outside NYC). Nils' father was named John Johnson and his mother Marie Erickson (these names might be Anglicized). It might also be that he is not from Bergen - the relatives who told me that are long dead, and much of what they told me about all my ancestors was frequently far from the truth! My hope is that finding information about his parents might lead me to the town where he was born and perhaps lived, as well as brothers and sisters. I have a picture of him as a baby, with his mother and sisters.
I am exceedingly grateful you are assisting me in my search. Thank you.
