Indre Holmedal in Sogn og Fjordane is 160 kilometers from Bergen. I know the military records gave Indre Holmedal as his birth place, but could that be another Oliver Oleson? The 1865 census recorded that Oliver was born in Bergen. I'm going to have to try to do more research. I know people often gave as a birthplace a city close to where they lived. I had three ancestors that gave their birthplaces as a city other than from where they were actually born. But their birthplaces were only a couple of kilometers from the larger cities.
I had a great grandfather who was born as Christian Andersen. He had a passport to travel within Norway, and his name on that was Christian Andersen Leth. Later he became simply Christian Leth. In the Bergen Borgerbuk (spelling??) His name was simply Christian Andreas Leth. Andreas was the name of his stepfather.
I can't begin to thank you for everything you've done. Incidentally I just heard from my cousin. He said that Oliver had two sons by the name of Oscar and Anton. They were my cousin's grandfather's brothers. His grandfather was Alf Frederick.
