Thank You...this does clear up some confusion. I believe this Ingebrit to be a cousin to the one I am looking for. He is listed in the family geneaology but not as the Ingebrit who went to the Hommelstø prestgard. I sent off for the naturalization papers of my Ingebrit and will proceed further when I get them.

There's probably some confusion here. Ingebrigt Nilsen Polle seems to be the one managing the vicarage in Brønnøy/Velsfjord in 1900:

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

He died in 1906:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/kb/gr/person/pg00000001...

You don't specify what type of records... church records, probate records???

The scanned parish church records on the Digitalarkivet website are created from the microfilms done by the LDS years ago and also available through them still at any LDS Family History Center. Their online library catalog (available at Familysearch.org) gives the following information in the notes under Church Records for Norway, Nordland, Tjøtta.

"Contains parish registers from the parishes Tjøtta with Skålvær chapel and Vevelstad. They were separated from Alstahaug clerical district in 1862. For years 1776 to 1862 see Alstahaug clerical district."

Checking the LDS library catalog is often a very informative and useful tool.

It helps to take advantage of that.

Also your Stake or Ward Family History Consultant might be able to help you use those online resources at Familysearch.org

She appears in the databases of Familysearch.org with the correct birthdate and parents listed there. That entry will also give you the exact number of the LDS microfilm on which the original document has been copied and made available.

You don't have quite the correct date of birth.

The first persons you started the query thread for also appear in Familysearch.org -- but do NOT take their ages from the death records -- those are wrong.

There is no obvious connection between the two different queries.

You appear to have at least an estimate of WHEN this man was born. Ulvangen was the name of a farm and people did not necessarily live at one farm all their lives - that detail location could be different than what you've assumed.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
The 1865 census referenced in the other thread you started on this family line and linked above says that the widower Andreas Andersen was born in Alstahaug -- so you can research for a detailed date and location in the church records for Alstahaug and/or one of the smaller parishes within Alstahaug.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
Clicking on "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] will bring up another screen and listing to choose from. Choose "Lesa skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Read the digitised parish records" [English version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html
Christian Matthias Andreasen Ulvang emigrated to America with his wife and children. If you want to find relatives, you will need to know if he has siblings.

He was born 19 Jan 1860 in Alstahaug, but his mother and twin brother died the same day. His father was already 39 years old, so chances are, even if he remarried there were probably not more children. You need to try and find older siblings.

In the 1865 census, his father, Andreas Andersen, was still living at Ulvang in Alstahaug, but not with any children.

His son, Christian, is a foster child with the family of Hans Andreas Hansen.

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

There are several other foster children named Andreassen living in Alstahaug, including two at Ulvange:

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

They could be siblings of Christian.

Hello Doris,
I'm actually not higtohigto. That is my brother. I was using his account. This is way late however, just this Sun, I discovered that my grandfather was the child born while crossing the Atlantic, Emil Dragland. I have been in contact with one of Emil's brother's sons and it is confirmed. Our family is so happy to finally solve this family mystery.I really don't want to type too much here in case you don't receive this. However, if you email me at coasterbunch@aol.com, I'd be more than happy to share how we found out. Are you related to Lars Dragland?
Take care,
Anne Sanders

You catch on very quickly - a pleasure to help you get started.

I'd also have been a bit suspicious of the Eriksen name for that woman - but it could also just have been a careless writer or even a misreading on the part of the person converting the original handwritten info into database form.

Translation is not something I trust myself with. My rough guess would be boarder, fisherman and fisherman's wife. Use the same online word list that I would -
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

As you can see from the other responses in this thread the Norwegian church records are available online for free use. You don't have to depend on others to find things for you.

Wow, this is fascinating!!! THANK YOU for taking the time to help me out with this. I read through the web articles describing traditional Norwegian naming schemes and so much of this makes sense now! The Harald KARLSEN is an exact match on his birthday - 9/11/1896. And of course Karl we knew was his father’s name. I suppose the family legend of the PEDERSEN surname is true! (Although, thanks to your help, we now know that there were no “surnames” in Norway until the 1920’s.) I would suspect that the HELLAND name was a “farm name” as your listed articles describe, and either Harald adopted that as his own, or perhaps it was given to him as an immigration manifest document into the United States. I did find on a map that there is a tiny village named Helland only a few miles southeast of Drag, which is where I am told Harald was born. All of this is now logical and fits very nicely.
So, if I read the census correctly, Harald had two brothers, Einar and Hans, and three sisters, Borghild, Marie, and one unnamed at the time (1910). His mother (Karl’s wife) is listed as Oluffa Eriksen. I will have to do some more research on that one, the records passed down to me show that Harald’s mother’s name was Mary, but I don’t know where that came from.
And, from the reading material you gave me, Karl’s father was likely named Peder, yes?
However, Karl’s wife, Oluffa Eriksen, must have her father’s surname Eriksen? (She doesn’t have the traditional ‘–datter’ suffix.) This one I will have to research further.
Are you able to translate the words “Inderst, fisker” and “Fiskerkone” listed as their occupations? I would love to know what these are.
Again, thank you for your assistance. This is so much helpful information; it is going to take me a while to digest. I have already shared this with my wife’s family and they are thrilled with the new light shed on their heritage. Please pass along anything more you find! Thank you!!!
HELLAND Family Ancestors

I am looking for information on my wife's paternal family. Her great-grandfather, Harold HELLAND, was born in Drag, Tysfjord, Nordland, Norway if my records are correct. At some point he left Norway for the United States but I don’t know when, or if his parents accompanied him. I don’t know if he had any siblings.

He married Gina AGRE in Sacred Heart, Renville, Minnesota, USA in 1918. The couple and family then moved and settled in Noonan, ND, USA sometime before 1930. The last record I have of them is from the 1940 census. The children eventually moved and settled in Washington State, USA, but I don't know if their parents came with them. Anything you have would be helpful!

Harold HELLAND (b 1896, Norway) married Gina AGRE (b 1896, Minnesota) and had three children, Helen (~1920), Thelma (~1921), and Harry (~1922), all born in Minnesota.

I believe that Harold's parents were Karl and Mary HELLAND. There is an old family legend that the surname was PETERSEN (or PETERSON?), but it was changed at some time to stand out from all of the other Norwegian Petersen emigrants. Legend has it that the family adopted the name from nearby village named Helland. I don’t know how much, if any, of that is true.

I've also found the Gina's parents were Gussenus and Thea AGRE, also originally from Norway, but immigrated to Minnesota.
I did have a great aunt Aase, although she did not emigrate to the US. My grandmother was Lisa (Elisa), her sister Betsy, brother Henrik all emigrated around the time of the depression. Please do ask your mother for me, I would be interested to find family closer to home. Thank you, Beth (Thingvold) Lovold.

I believe you are related me. My greatgrandfather was John Thingvold, a cod merchant in Kristiansund. My grandfather was Haakon Thingvold (married to Lill-Aase Loseth) b 1903. My grandfather had a brother Axel (and two others I am not remembering the moment). My mother Lill-Aase Thingvold emigrated to the US in 1962, so did her sister, Birgit (deceased), and her other sister Turid Thingvold married Guven Sazak (deceased) and lived in Istanbul. My uncle John Thinvgold (deceased) died in Kristiansund. My mother is the youngest and the only one left. I will ask her if you would like. Best, Ingrid Thingvold Causey (Pasadena California)

Re: Almli Farm

This is an excerpt from a book owned by Ottar Nielson Almli that I found in a write up about the Hagen/Almli family. It has some good information about the Almli farm.

"This farm was started in 1600 a.d. by a man named Almli. Jacob Ingebritson owned it around 1800. After him came Gulle Jansson from Luktvassli. He worked as a hired hand on the farm for a few years then married the daughter from the farm Fredrikka Jacobsdatter and inherited the farm around 1850. Nels Eliason, from Tustvatn, bought the farm from Gulle in 1896 and worked it until 1934, then his son, Ottar Nielson Almli took it. He married Borghild Albertsdatter Forsmo. This was a large farm originally and in a deal in 1821 a part of the farm called Sandbrukta was sold off. While Gulle ran the farm he built the large farmhouse which is still standing and in use, dug a well up in the mountains nearby and carried the water down to the house. He also built some of the outbuildings which are still standing and are in good condition, they were made of logs and later covered with siding. He was also known for making good brandy. He died January 15, 1913 at Almli. There were no roads past the house at that time so his body was taken by boat accross the lake "Ommervatn" near the house, to the road oppposite, then by horse-drawn carriage over the many miles to Dolstand church at Mosjoen where the funeral was held that night."

I hope this information is helpful to you. I am also searching for any information about Gulle, Fredrikka and the Almli farm.

Thank you for answering my post. I am an American, and until a few weeks ago, I believed that my ancestry was 100% Swedish. Interesting twist to find out that I am actually 1/16 Norwegian! That will be big news at the family reunion in July. Bjerka is not far from where my great great parents lived in Sweden. I have established a good trail of Swedish church records for them, but I can't figure out how to make the leap back to Norway and get that 1805 birth record for my great great grandmother. The record does not appear to be available on Ancestry.com. Your advice is much appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. Henry Schraa was my stepgrandfather and a Dutch immigrant who married my grandmother Lisa Thingvold Holten in the US. Lisa had another husband, I'm not sure of the name, but Thingvold was her maiden name. My greatuncle Henrik Thingvold died in Kristiansund in the 1970's. I have visited his grave. He lived with us in America for many years. I had a Tante Aase, but I believe she lived in Oslo with her husband, I'm not sure of his surname. She died in the 1980's, I believe. My mother Lisbet Holten Thingvold Lovold died last May, she was born in Kristiansund 14 November, 1923 and emigrated to the US in 1929. I also had a greataunt, Betsy Thingvold, but I'm not sure if her name had been americanized. Thanks again for your reply. Beth Adair Thingvold Lovold
