Thanks, Brian. I can add this info to the family tree.
Have you read "The History of Primrose Township"? There are several paragraphs of info about the Halvor Halvorson Rindy family -- homesteading in Primrose township, they even had a cheese factory. It is a good read.

Sylvia Gordon Nelson
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Hi Sylvia,

I looked at your online tree.... I noticed you have an exact birth date for Anne Hansdatter Peterson, but seem to be unsure of her parents. You list her place of birth as "Hafslo parish, Luster county". Luster is not a county, it is the parish next to Hafslo. Both parishes are in the county (Fylke) of Sogn og Fjordane.

If you look at the 1870 census, you will see that "Hjertrud Sviggum" is listed as "Jertru Peterson".

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

Going by this name, this must be the birth record for your Anne:

#19
Born 14 Feb 1846 in Hafslo parish
Baptized 2 Feb 1846
Anne
Father: Hans Pedersen Pladsen
Mother: Gjertrud Eriksdatter
Residence: the farm "Pladsen" (in Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane)

Kildeinformasjon: Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Hafslo, Ministerialbok nr. A 5 (1834-1852), Fødte og døpte 1846, side 101.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=11457&...

The dates for birth and marriage were entered in the wrong columns, this was "corrected" by the wavy line that looks like an "S". The farm "Sviggum" is also in Hafslo parish, they may have lived at this farm later.

I have researched them in the Norwegian Parish registers and would be willing to send what I have to you if you would email me. I would love to see what you have.

Arvid,
I did receive the picture of Anker Moen and I sent you a reply by e-mail. I am sorry you did not get it.
In the e-mail I mentioned that my dad Patrick Dillon did recognize Anker even though the picture was taken at an early age.
My dad met Anker for the first time in 1930, Anker was working in the bush with a guy named LArsen or Clawson who previously purchased a wood lot. Anker was cutting the wood with him, at that time it would have been 8 foot and would pile it in a wood pile to be transported to the railroad sidings in the spring. They also had to take the bark of the trees in the spring before it would be shipped by train.
Philip Farley was the wood scaler in those years.
My father remembers when he first met Moen, a christmas day mr. Larsen and Moen came over at the Dillon's camp in Coppell, a small community south of Hearst, the name of the Dillon's camp was Bouchard where they were staying that winter in 1930. That christmas dad said Anker was giving the kids some sleigh rides with the horses and pushing them down the hill with the tobogan a good part of the day.He also said that Moen would come by during other holidays like Easter where he again would play with the kids.
Moen later purchased a car and he would travel to Montréal. Moen was a trapper and a hunter using his skis to go across the bush after moose. In those days you could not afford to buy meat so you would gather from the nature and get what you could eat. When someone would get a moose they would share with the others in the small community. They were known to make their own moonshine for their own pleasure.
My dad said Moen was a great person who showed him how to trap as a young boy, starting with wild rabbits, then later, marten, mink and beavers and showed him how to hunt. My dad shot his first moose at 15 years old because he was the oldest of the family and he had to help the family gather the food and put it on the table, for a family of 16 kids. Moen would always have dogs with him with the tent like the one in the picture and would use it while hunting, with the minimum of clothes and a blanket, because they could not travel with too much equipment on the skis.
My dad has great memories of Anker Moen he always talked about him positively.
To this day dad does not not know where Moen went and where he would be buried,

Sincerely
Marcel and Patrick Dillon
Hearst, Ontario Canada

Aslak was my grandmothers grandfather. I spoke to my aunt about another subject and she has much info I will be adding as soon as I get the chance. One of Aslaks sons was Nels Thompson, Nels Daughter Murial (Thompson) Sheehan was my grandmother. I have some poorly copied pictures of Aslak and Nels as well as some postcards poorly scanned. I will be putting them online soon and updating my family tree so it should be easily traced from there.
The free databases of familysearch.org show the couple living in Filmore Co. MN in 1910. Aslak listed as 78 yrs old, 'Egler' listed as 80 yrs old. It also puts their year of immigration to the US as 1866.

Above a poster listed Aslak as born 2 March 1832 in Telemark, Norway.
You give indication that his actual Norwegian last name might have been more like Torbjornsen.

So another search in familysearch.org for an Aslak Torbjornsen born 1832 in Telemark, Norway quickly gave back --
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N43L-2R8

An EXACT date match -- wow.

So if he didn't leave Norway until 1866 he should probably still appear in Kvitseid, Telemark for the 1865 Norwegian census. And they do --
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

There is no language 'Scandinavian' -- perhaps you should try to translate from Norwegian.
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

Good Morning, Cousin.
I know this is an old post, but like me, I hope you keep going back to them just to check.
On the link http://www.holla.no/emigranter/id301.htm
if you go down 10 entries below Saamund Nilsen, you find an entry for Ungkarl Gert Henriksen and Pige Karen Thomasdatter af Ringsevje.
Gert is Ragnild's (Saamund's 1st wife) brother and Karen is Johanna's (Saamund's 2d wife) sister.
I always wondered what the link was between the 3 of them.
In the same reference, in the year 1867, 5 entries down, you will find

Snedker Thomas Rasmussen
og kone Mari Olsdatter
Johanne ,
Maren og
Nils år .

Søsterbarnet Julie Marie Severine Carlsdatter

This is Johanne's (Saamund 2d wife) father/step-mother. The indiv Julie is, I believe, either a cousin or step-sister.

Check out Norway Heritage TOPIC ID 4099
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4099
and follow the links. There is alot of good stuff on them.
These guys/gals that helped me out were fantastic.
You have my e-mail if you need. Cousin Jeff

The 1910 census for Christiania (Oslo) shows that Elise Rode is still alive and living at the address Falbes Gate 9. This is the address Julie listed when she left Norway that year.

Augusta Benedikte Rode is living there also, married to Bertran Schetelig. They have one daughter, Sigvor, born 16 Aug 1903.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01036392120...

Augusta Benedikte made a trip to America with Gunvor, leaving Kristiania on 24 Apr 1908. According to the 1910 census, she had lived in Indianapolis in America and returned to Norway in 1910.

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

Her husband, Bertram Fredrik Schetelig, had already left for Colorado on 14 Jun 1907.

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

The 1910 census does not show that he had returned to Norway. He was in Leadville, Colorado in 1907, then appears to be living in Memphis, Tennessee in 1909 and in St. Joseph, Missouri the same year. In 1914 he was in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Very interesting, Betram Fredrik Schetelig (III) born 1872 was the son of Betram Frederik Schetelig (II), born 1815 in Kristiania. His grandfather, Bertram Frederich Schetelig (I), was born 1776 in Kiel, Germany. All three were watch makers.

Hi Jorån,

Thank you for the bygdbok offer. I am looking for information on the ownership of Bakka (Vestre) farm in Hovin up to about 1860 (bruk #2, as this was owned by an Ole Olsen, whose son was Ole Olsen (m. Kari Steensdatter) who emmigrated in 1842 (I'm descended from his son Ole born 6 March 1838 in Hovin.) I have looked at the digitized land registers for this time period for Bakka but they are very hard to read.

Ole owned (or at least occupied) bruk #2 of Bakka (Vestre) at the 1838 Matrikkel, being #13b of farm 5.

http://arkivverket.no/URN:db_read/db/35480/84/

the land register is here (looks to be from a slightly later time period)

tp://www.arkivverket.no/URN:tl_read?idx_id=14549&uid=ny&i...

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.

The 1875 census gives no information about how long the family lived at the Sætalien farm. That couple has at least two children who should appear also in the 1865 census and then the family appears here -
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Neither census collected information about how long persons lived at any residence but they both give info about what parish/district each was born in.

His father was only a 'husmann' so would have been likely to move fairly frequently.
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

A specific date for births and/or christenings (baptisms) would be found in the parish records - not any census before the 1910.
For example - the birth/baptism record of their son Nils who is seen in both the 1865 and 1875 censuses - (record #18 on page 10)
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5981&i...

You can look for as many primary records as you choose to.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
Clicking on "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] will bring up another screen and listing to choose from. Choose "Lesa skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Read the digitised parish records" [English version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

Would Aslak Johnson and his parents have been long time residents of Saetalien in Rauland? Or does the name of this place change in the past. The farm names I have noticed always seem to change spellings which makes me believe they are from a different parish. Very confusing. But I thank for the info and guidance to Annes parents. I guess a specific day is not available for some birthdays. Thanks again.

Looks like they stayed in Rauland, Telemark for the births of most of their pre-1900 children. The parish records of Rauland is where you look for the records of birth/baptism.

http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&...
Looking for the birth place and actual date or christening of Anne Ostensdotter, Aslakson, Johnson; near Hellby ,Telemark, Norway. She was born supposedly in 1893. Her parents are father- osten or Austin Aslakson(Johnson in the USA) born 13 apr. 1870, mother- Assa Johnsdotter Sandvik, born 21 Jan. 1871. Both parents I believe from Skakkestol farm, Rauland, Telemark, Nor.Anne emigrated with family to North Dakota then on to Alberta, Canada. She died 23 Dec. 1971 in Edmonton, Alberta.Any Aslakson trees out there to compare to.

Here's a little trick. The "m" in front of the marriage entry means they were married in the Mælum church in Solum. The Klokkerbok (copy of the church records) is somewhat easier to read:

M3 (4th entry from bottom)
no date entered

Karl Anders Abrahamsen Berjan, born Berjan parish
Ulrikke Kristine Vidmark, born in Sweden

Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Mælum i Solum, Klokkerbok nr. II 2 (1859-1879), Ekteviede 1875-1878, side 149.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7903&i...
My copy is well worn and even coffee stained... I recommend it to you.

"Norwegian English Dictionary" by Einar Haugen says --

hå`vin

That appears to indicate the vowel o in Hovin is prounounced much like the vowels in "caught" or "coat" (no accurate English equivalent - actually in between those sounds)
and the i is a short vowel - therefore sounds much like the i in "bit" (but again they think there is no accurate English equivalent).
