No - tradition would have meant that she NEVER used her husband's patronymic but is it always possible that someone made an error or simple mistake when they wrote in the church book.

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na12.html
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm
http://www.norwayheritage.com/norwegian-names.htm
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/farms.htm

If she were born in a time period and an area where church records no longer exist then there will probably NOT be a parish record of who her parents were.

You might have to teach yourself to use old Norwegian probate records and look for her father's probate -- maybe it mentioned her.
The parish records for Lenvik, Troms list a Rebekka Nielsdtr as dying about the first Sunday after Epiphany in 1762. That record does not indicate her age when she died.
I didn't see any other Rebekka in years close to that.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9683&i...

Lenvik church records are available for years as early as 1753.

Hi,
I'm trying to find information regarding the Sanvig/Wilson line. My grandfather was George Wilson who was a dairy farmer in Ruawai and I believe his grandfather was a Sanvig, his name may have been (possibly changed to) Peter, and there was a connection with the Warkworth area.I think they may have settled in that area when they emigrated.
If you have any info I would be most interested.

If you look at the details recorded in the 1930 and 1920 US federal censuses for Albert you can get an approximate year that he immigrated to the US. (If you can find him in more censuses hopefully that time period would be substantiated.) That would seem to indicate that he came to the US as a child of 11 years or younger. So he probably came with other family members.

IF you think he sailed from Europe from a Norwegian port you can check the emigrant register databases at the Digitalarkivet website. You have some reason to think he may have come through Troms Norway?

We obviously do not see the same things at all on the same page. Also our experiences in using old Norwegian documents are obviously completely different.

I see no female names in that list of introductions on page 15.
I see no Peder Olsen either.

I do see the marks of witnesses on the same type of record of parish event where I've seen the same in other areas of Norway.

I wish you good luck.

No, it is not introducing the fathers but the introductions have male and female names. I have read that home baptism did take place and it was often not repeated in the church They must have kept a record of the home baptism in order to have the Confirmation conferred and they had to be confirmed to be married.
I don't read much Norwegian but does it say "Peder Olsens Mother" or "the mother of Peder Olsen? Once in awhile, the father and the mother are both recorded for the baptism but not often in these early records. Would a home baptism be a record like the baptisms but without sponsors/witnesses?
This Parish Record is different from others that I have read. Witnesses actually sign the book. Although not able to write, they did affix their initials next to their written name.

Those are not introductions of the fathers. Those are introductions of the mothers where they are just not named -- like saying 'Peter Iverson's wife' rather than her name. The mother didn't appear to be named in the baptismal listing either for the few pages there that I looked through. I've seen that in many parts of Norway in very very early years.

A home baptism was usually recorded in parish records but just at a slightly later date and the sacrament probably re-done in the church then too. I know that was the case in later years and in other areas. I don't know if this parish noted a previous home baptism in that time period.

All of the names connected with the Aasel/Isac introduction are male names. This is not the only intro with male names. I have also seen the mother introductions. They happen about 6 weeks after the birth. What did they do when there was a home baptism. In that climate, they surely could not get to church at certain times, attested by the communion numbers. The church baptisms are in the same format as most of the churches. The mothers name is omitted in these earlier records. This is the first time I have come across male introductions but this is also the farthest north I have researched.

In that list of men's wives being introduced back to the congregation there are a few legible names. An introduction almost always took place AFTER the baptism and if you look at the earlier page(s) of that same record book at least two of the fathers are fairly clearly listed and the child's name is given in those baptismal records and the names of the witnesses for that event.

The handwriting is difficult but you should probably feel lucky that records that early exist at all.

I don't know how to get a list of farm names. I just used the 1801 census database at the Digitalarkivet and utilized the search functions of "starts with", "contains", etc. to search for any minor spelling limiter I could discern in the farm names as scrawled on that page.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/DigitalArchives.htm...

I disagree. I see no reason to think these are other than standard Introductions for these men's wives. I did't read anything there that made me think the children were baptized at home. If it isn't indicated -- I don't assume such.

The LDS Family History Library online catalog indicates the existence of at least two different published book sets of history/genealogy for the Trondenes area -- perhaps you can extract a farm list from those.
https://www.familysearch.org/#form=catalog
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/bygdebok.html

I read the word after Introduc... as Isack, not Aasel.

The words you are calling towns appear to be local farm names. I compared to the farm names for that district in the 1801 and most were fairly good matches when you think "sounds like".

I believe that I have found the Trondenes Parish Christening Record of Aasel Olsdatter, born 1745. The Parish Record lists it as an "introduction" but the entry has all the markings of a baptism. The 1841 census also puts Aasel's birth at 1746. If someone could please do a little translating and clarify the names of the towns for me, that would help a lot. Also, is it possible to tell which of the people at the christening are the god parents?
Thank you for any help you can give.
Lynn
Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070601630380....

Rotvik emigration to America

My grandmother Marie Henriette (born 6-29-1882 in Ibested, Salangen) and her brother Peder Anskar (born 1878), his wife Benta and son Arnold (born 1905)emigrated together and used the last name Rotvik (sometimes spelled Rotvig in America). We have a lot of information on them in America and US census data says that they came to America in 1906.

Marie and Peter's father was Anton Kristian Jorgensen who lived at Rotvik and Marie and Peter sometimes show up as Jorgensen or Antonsen on some of the Norwegian records. I have received excellent records from a family member in Norway and found a lot more records on my own, but I am missing this emigration record.

I am looking for the record of when they left Norway. I would like to know the dates and the name of the ship and port of entry. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Maybe they went to a Canadian port - I don't have access to that.

I already found the record of Marie's second trip from Norway to America in 1913.

Thanks for any help.

The Erich Larsen living at Strømmen in 1801 did not have children born there before 1775, so if he is the father of Martha Erichsdatter, she was born elsewhere and they didn't arrive at Strømmen until about 1775.

Yes, Strømmen is also in Lenvik. Here is a link to the 1801 census for Strømmen. The family living there could very well be the parents of Martha Erichsdatter, but this
needs to be confirmed.

Brian
