Surnames: Jonasson, Olofsdotter, Johansson, Johanson, Johnson
Thanks for your explanation and insight. I would appreciate your thoughts regarding the following circumstances:

My great grand fathers were brothers and when they emigrated my grand parents where children under the age of 10. The only significant events prior to emigration is their birth. My grandfather's birth name is Johannes and his father is Johan Jonasson, My grandmother is Maria and her father is Olof Jonasson. Their last names for the significant events of marriage and death have become Americanized to Johnson.

At this point I am leaning towards using Johannes Johansson and Maria Olofsdotter as the primary name and attaching notes for each citation with a different name e.g., Jon Johanson, John Johnson, David Joe Johnson.

I guess there is no right answer and as long as the citations are noted and linked back to their birth names, those in the future looking at my work can at least follow my steps.
