I've read this thread regarding Boucher/Butcher with interest, as my 3x great-grandfather was Thomas Boucher Reed. I don't know much about him - don't know when he was born (late 1700's or very early 1800's, presumably in either Barbados or British Guiana as the Reed family frequented both - but since Barbados records seem to be complete and there is no baptism record there, it must be British Guiana, where there are no records!); he died before 1864. He was a doctor in British Guiana, educated at Edinburgh University. I don't know his wife's name. I believe he was the brother of Richard Reed of Demerara and then Barbados; this is based on Richard Reed's will, where he leaves money for the medical education of his brother Thomas in Great Britain, in the time frame that Thomas was in Scotland (he graduated in 1826). Another sibling and a niece are also mentioned in the will, and this is the connection to the Bouchers. The will says:
"I also direct my said executors to purchase another Gold watch, key, chain and seals of the like value and present the same to my dear niece Eliza Bowcher daughter of my dear sister Elizabeth Fergus who was formerly Elizabeth Bowcher widow."
You can find a full transcript of the will on the internet if you google "Richard Reed, Demerara, will".
I would be interested if any of you know who Elizabeth Boucher and her daughter Eliza were. Several Reed siblings are mentioned in the will, and I haven't been able to trace any of them.
