Hi,

I'm looking for any information that anyone might have on the surname SMEERPONT, or any derivative (I have found too many to mention through censuses!). The first mention of the surname comes from a Nicholas Smeerpont, who was born in Antwerp circa 1844, who moved to London sometime between 1861 and 1871 by my reckoning.

Thanks to all in advance

I am trying to find information on my Aunt. She was born in Antwerp around 1898 her name was Mary Crauwels. She had a brother called Jack. She emigrated to Gunnislake Cornwall, England at the beginning of the First World War with a number of other Belgian refugees. She married my uncle Harry James Snell 14 Dec 1918 by licence in the registry office in Devonport. Her father was Charles Crauwels a Diamond Cutter. They went to Belgium after the war and ran a Pub in Antwerp I think it was called the Cornishman. They returned to England and settled in Surrey.
They had one daughter Mary known as Nancy or Mush, I do not know if she was born in Belgium or England. She was born in the early 1920's.
Any information would be welcome.

Help In finding Address In Antwerp

Hello,
I am a Texas native and when I was a child, my father worked at the Gulf Oil Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. Before WWII, he befriended a gentleman who was Chief Engineer on a tanker called the 'Good Gulf.' Each time they crossed the Atlantic ocean and came into port for refueling my father had his new friend Jack DeVisscher come home for a meal. I was not born then, but my older sister and parents enjoyed his visits. It wasn't long before his wife, Martha, would accompany him and she too would come for dinner and they would visit, shop and tell us about their life in Belgium. Oddly enough the "Good Gulf' was out of Texas and Belgium when WWII began, and Jack was immediately inducted into the the United States Navy. He could not go home to Martha until after the war. I was born in 1942, my sister in 1947 and a brother in 1949. After the war, Jack and Martha came many times. We knew them as our good friends.
When Jack became too old to work aboard ship, he retired in Antwerp. My folks kept in touch at the holidays with them.
Then sometime in the late 1960's or 1970's my mother remembers receiving a card with a black border. It was a death notice for Jack Devisscher. Martha had sent it. She continued to correspond with my parents, who now had moved from Port Arthur, Texas, to Austin, Texas.
I remember asking for her address and sent her a Christmas card in 1983. She replied to me at my home in California.

The back of the card said all of this on one line:
Mrs. M. DeVisscher - Van Duyststr, 168, Deurene, 2100, Antwerp Belgium.
Can anyone tell me how to find that address and to find the family again.
Jack and Martha had no children, but there were a niece and a nephew. I would just like to say hello to them.

Thank you anyone in Antwerp

Leslie Pierce Royce
A Texas Rose
Living in the Pacific NW
Vancouver, WA.

I am doing research on my dau-in-laws family the Schindlers
Bernhard Schindler was 42 in 1853 and left Antwerp and arrived in NY in 1853 with his family. But other than the ship records stating they arrived in Dec of 1853 I can only find three of the children staying past 1860. What I am wondering is did the parents and remaining children return to Antwerp. Is there any way that I can find this out. I find lists of arrivals in US but how do I find a list of people returning. Thanks Sue

I will be visiting friends in The Netherlands next month, and I am hoping to take a day trip to Antwerp to look for some birth records. I have VERY little information (just birthdate and my grandfather's full birth name), and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how I can locate official documentation.

Do you know where I could look for birth records? Will I be allowed access to the information since I am not a European citizen?

I would appreciate any help at all.
Thank you very much in advance!

Cordially,
Daniel I.
looking for information on my grandfather

I would very much like the help in finding out about my paternal grandfather, PERCY JEURSEN from Antwerp. I am not sure if he left Antwerp for England first or if he came directly to South Africa. (Cape Town) where I am. He married Edith Eliza Pharo, and they had 5-6 children, Cecil,Harold,Lilly,William and Ethel. I think there might have been 1 child that died, not sure as it was never spoken about. As far as I know he was a printer by trade.

Many thanks, Beverly Jeursen
Henry/Harry deVOCHT (b. 1871 Belgium, d. 1961 Saskatchewan, Canada)

I am seeking further information about the ancestors and birthplace information of Henry/Harry DeVOCHT (or de VOCHT). Henry married Joanna Verstrepen (d. 1941 in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, Canada). They had at least nine children: Dena, Emile, Josephine, Leopold (aka "Polo"), Peter, Victoria, Harry, Frank Joseph, and Albert.

The homestead application I have for Henry/Harry's Indian Head, Saskatchewan home lists only "Belgium" as birthplace. Some compiled histories list it as Schilde, Antwerpen, Belgium--but I do not have any documents to prove that.

If you have more information about the ancestors or correct birthplace of Henry/Harry, please contact me.

However all United States records state this family's birthplaces as Prussia. I understand there are city records that list people that stayed in Antwerp prior to their departure. Does anyone know how I can access this information?

In Memory of Frank Van der Auwera

From Hungary/General Forum:
"Kupan family
Author: Frank Van der Auwera Date: 18 Mar 2001
Surnames: Kupan
I am looking for information about my ancestors, the Kupan-Erdely family which has lived near Cluj up to the 18th century, then moved to Germany and later to Belgium.
The family was apparanted to the families Von Griecheim and Falenemes
Any information would be most welcome
kind regards,
Frank Van der Auwera"

Dear All,
Years ago lost contact with Frank, his his email and website was gone. I wouldn't even dream, that to a kind, gentle soul with a new family something so untimely would happen. Perhaps gone on a nature sabbatical, I thought. Now I see it was 4 years ago but seems just a blink.

Our common interest, searching for the Kupan families from Transylvania, wasn't progressing, but wasn't worried or hurried, I know it was going to happen in time, after the political situation improves. Finally it did and got results, so I searched the net for Frank hoping to find his updated beatiful website and share the good news, that found the Kupan connection in the city of Dees he was searching for.

Instead of his website, with great sadness I found the University of Antwerp anouncement in Memory of Frank Van der Auwera: http://www.vvbad.be/files/348-personalia.pdf
I don't know Dutch, so may ask someone to translate for me the end of the first sentence, what seems to be the cause of death.
Thank you very much.

In case the family interested in continue his reseach, I have his notes about the Subject families and the Kupan family Transylvania connections, and gladly would provide copies for them.

With kind Regards,
Joseph L.
My grandfather Charles Ceuppens was born in Antwerp in 1907. He died at sea during the second world war 1942. I am trying to find any family history from this side of the family. His father, my great-grandfather, emmigrated to England from about 1912 on. His name was Andreas (Andre) Ceuppens whose father was called Peter. Andre's first marriage was to a Clementine (Charles' mother). Andre moved to England after her death and married a Hilda Whitfield in 1921. He died in 1945 aged 65. This is about all I know about Andre. If any one has any connections I would be interested to hear from them. Does anyone know about obtaining BMD records from Belgium?

VanWyen Family Info

Looking for information regarding my husband's great great grandfather George van Wyen b.1835 and his wife, Adrianna Fisser b.1836. I believe George (Joost?) was born in Bruinisse the Netherlands to Maartje(Margje) Mulder or Muller b.1800 in Oosterland and Willem van Wijen (also van Wijjen and Weijen) b.1795 in Alblasserdam. Luckily, I have found records of Maartje and of George's siblings indicating births, marriages, emmigration to U.S and eventual settlement in West Sayville, N.Y. However, I have found nothing "official" on George himself. We knew that his son, Rulof was born in in 1871 in Antwerp where George was rigging ships. We thought that he was the only child born there "on the way to the U.S." but the 1880 census in W. Sayille indicates that Rulof was actually the 4th of their children to be born in Antwerpen indicating a longer stay! The others were Wilhelmena b.1864, Mary 1862 and Cornelia 1870 (These particular dates are approximate using census information.) I am looking for any records regarding their stay in Belgium, particularly one that can verify the name of George's PARENTS and perhaps record of his emmigration in 1873. Thanks for any assistance!

Help with Antwerp Research Please

I've just found out that my great grandmother may have moved to Antwerp around the early 1920s and probably died there. I'd like to establish whether this is the case and, if so, find out more. However, I have no idea where to start my search!

She was born Margaret Jane Speck in Sunderland, England in 1864 and spent most of her childhood in West Hartlepool. She had a son, George Lee Wooley Speck in 1884 and then in 1887 married Robert William Gunson and had 6 more children. She was also known as "Marguerite Constance" and as "Madge". Sometime around 1903-5 they separated and I believe that she lived with an actor called Philip Gordon. Her children went to live with their maternal and paternal grandparents and may have had little contact with their mother after this.

I have heard that she may have gone to live with her first son, George, in Antwerp in the late 1910s or early 1920s but have no proof of this. Apparently he was chief engineer on board the Empress of Britain.

George Lee Wooley Speck married Adelaide Atkinson in Hartlepool in 1911 and they had a daughter, Mary Gordon Speck, in 1912. After 1912 I have found no record of them so it could be that they moved at this point.

Sorry that this message is so detailed but hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction to start my research!

Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Take heed. Belgium beer can be a lot more potent than the beer you buy in the U.S. I was never a beer person, but it is served everywhere in Belgium and really better than warm tea or coke (no ice unless asked for). One glass in the big square in Antwerp and I had to be very cautious when walking, almost like I had on bifocals for the first time.

I am trying to find relatives of mine. My Aunt married Ludovicus Petrus Schuermans, in England, in 1916. They then moved back to Belgium. My father always told me that I had cousins in Belgium. He said their names were Pierre, Conisca and Francesca. Ludovicus was born about 1898. From the wedding certificate I can see that his Father was called Louie Jean Baptist Schuermans. My Aunt's name was Louisa Margaret Schuermans (nee Bryant). She was also born in 1898.

I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
Maureen Turner

Charles VAN PRICE mystery

I am researching a mystery. This is the story as told by my grandmother.

Charles Van Price was born in the mid 1800s. He came to the U.S. in 1874, and went to Dousman, Wisconsin. He worked for Mr. Dousman, later moved to Little Chute, Wisconsin, then to Phlox, Wisconsin in 1887. Tragedy struck however, because he, my great grandfather, decided to see Holland again. He sold his land earlier, and was now one of the wealthiest men in that part of the state. While staying with his daughter, Effie, in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1922, he went grocery shopping for her and was not seen again. His daughter found he had withdrawn all his savings (a very sizeable amount) and left for Europe. They traced him to Antwerp, Belgium — then all trace was gone. He was never heard from again. After investigating, it was assumed that he returned to Holland from Milwaukee.

Charles is originally from the Zeeland area of the Netherlands and his last name was written as VAN PARIJS in the old Dutch records. If anyone can help me find his final destination, possibly using cemetery records, etc. I assume he went back to Zeeland, but the only "record" is him in Antwerp. You can get more detailed info on Charles at my family tree website - http://www.zalewskifamily.net/family/individual.php?pid=I031...

Any leads, tips or helpful information would be greatly appeciated. Thanks in advance!

I am trying to locate my grandmother's passage to the U.S. in the 1st half of 1898. She was from Ghent. Is Antwerp the only port from which ships sailed from? Her name was Julia Alice Waelkens. She may have been traveling with her mother, Sylvia van der Pierre Waelkens. Another relative, Omer Valentine, also arrived in 1898. I believe they arrived at the port of Wilmington, NC but can find no records of their arrival. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for British family Members in Antwerp

I have discovered that some members of my fathers's family were born in Antwerp in the 1870s and the 1880s.

The twist is that they were born to British citizens, Henry Liddell Mabb, sr. and Eleanor Mabb.

The two children that I have names and dates handy for are:

Mabb, Louis Albert - 20 July 1883

Mabb, Herbert William - 1 November 1879

There were other sibling born in Antwerp as well.

These two men had older siblings that were born and christened in Hull, England.

The oldest son, Henry Liddell Mabb jr. attended the college d'Athene? in Belgium.

I have been told that the family were either piano makers or cabinet makers.

Why would they be travelling back and forth from England to Belgium in the 1870/80s?

Was there a large British population in Belgium at the time, and why?

What would have been the historical/economical situation that would make a family pull up roots and end up near Winnipeg, Manitoba.(Brrrh).

I have been told that my great grandmother, Beatrice Annie Mabb, at the age of about 11 or 12, came up to the Winnipeg area by Red River oxcart fron St Paul, Minnesota with her family to homestead.
The family emigrated to North America in 1887.

I do not know what port they left from, the name of the ship, or the port they disembarqued at.

I do not know how they got from the East to St. Paul. I am assuming by train.

If any one could help me out with information, I would greatly apprecate it.

Eileen Kellner

Kuylen Family of Antwerp- Hannuth family

Hello,
Trying to obtain information on the Kuylen family of Antwerp. My great-great grandfather Carlos( Karlos, Karolus, Carolus) Kuylen was born in Antwerp in the early 1800's. Possibly around 1820. His sister Amilia Kuylen ( Aemilia, Emilie, Amelia) was born either 1827 or 1828. His wife Eliza Hannuth was born 1834 but I am not sure she was born in Antwerp, might have been a neighboring area. Can someone help me find records of their birth or direct me where to look. Thanks Dawn

Speck Gunson family

I'm trying to trace my great grandmother and her eldest son, my grandmother's half brother, who I believe moved from the UK to Antwerp sometime after 1912.

The son's name was George Lee Wooley Speck and he was born in West Hartlepool on 4 Dec 1884. In 1911 he married Adelaide Atkinson and they had a daughter, Mary, born in 1912. I can find no record of them after this date but a distant relative has heard a rumour that he was an engineer on the SS Great Britain and settled in Antwerp, possibly in the 1920s.
My great grandmother was born Margaret Jane Speck and married Robert William Gunson in 1887. They separated around 1904 and she may have ended up living with her son, George, in Antwerp. I have found no record of her death in the UK so she possibly died abroad. My grandmother unfortunately lost contact with all of her family.

I have no idea how to research records in Belgium so if anybody has any ideas I would be very grateful.
