Hi Andrew,

I been doing some research on Roger Vanderhoeft lately, he an offshoot of the John Gillard Stapleton and Evelyn Elizabeth Snowden family.

Have a look at my site on My Hertiage:
http://www.myheritage.com/site-family-tree-30928272/gillard-...

There is a lot of information on Stapleton's (my family) and Snowden's here. Also a little bit on Roger Vanderhoeft family.

Regards

Tim Gillard-Stapleton

I am looking into the family of Roger Vanderhoeft who lived in Brussels. He was married to an english women, Evelyn Snowden which is where my link comes from. He was involved in helping Allied soldiers escape back to the UK during WW2 and they had 2 children, Patrick Jean and Anne-Maire Evelyn who were both born in the early thirties. I would like to know if there are any family connections out there as I drawn a blank on any further information

Charles William Pearce Lane Belgium bigamy

Charles William Pearce Lane disappears from the UK Electoral rolls in Birmingham after 1935, and family folklore has it that he absconded and bigamoiusly married a Belgian girl.

I wonder if anyone has any record of this man in Belgium after 1935.
Bearing in mind he may have used any permutation of his names to escape detecton!

He was born illegitimately to Rose Pearce in 1894 in Birmingham. She died of TB soon after. He was brought up by Charles Lane (who we believe was actually his father), and Laura, alongside his four sisters, who all held him at arms length, for being a 'bad 'un'.

He was sent to Monmouthshire for four years for stealing, and at 17 was drafted from there to serve in WW1 in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, becoming a POW in Sennelager, Germany in WW1 by 1916.

He returns by 1919 to Birmingham, to marry Fanny Louisa WIlson, and having a son, William Lane. He regularly uses his mother's name (Pearce) as a middle name, in various official documents.

I am keen to trace Charles WIlliam Pearce Lane's movements after he disappeared, so I hope that he has turned up in someone's research in Belgium.

He is seen as a black sheep, but had a particularly rotten life which led to some desperate choices, and I would like to make sure he is acknowledged properly in our family and not hidden away as he has been thus far!

Hope you can help. Can supply further UK details if necessary.

lorraine at lolpayne dot co dot uk for correspondence please.

Re: looking for a professional genealogist in Brussels

I think the custom in Belgium was the same as in the UK, i.e. the marriage took place in the paish church of the parish where the bride's family lived. However then as now there were a lot of non-Belgians living here in the 19th century as Brussls was the administrative capital of the Habsburg Netherlands and then of the Bonapartist United Kingdom of the Netherlands. There were sizeable Protestant and Jewish minorities whose births deaths and marraiges would not have been recorded in the parish church registers. I think the first censuses were held in the late nineteenth century. Like in the UK the situation is harder to follow in the cities than in country villages where everyone was Catholic and didn't move far in their lifetimes. The situation is probably further complicated by the use of Latin in the parish registers.
Good luck with your research!

Thanks, Chris. That is very nice of you. Since posting, I have actually had some success with the digitized archives. I was able to find several ancestors, and am very happy about that. I was surprised however, to learn that most of the records have very little information regarding the person's origin - and marriage records do not list parents' names. So it is difficult to continue searching, especially given the number of parishes. In other words, I am stuck. However, I am not sure that I know all there is to know. Was there some custom in place in the 1600 - 1700s that determined in which parish an event was recorded? For example, in other European countries it was customary for the marriage to take place in the parish of the bride - was this also the case in Belgium? I have a marriage record from the 1690s - but cannot seem to find the births. I actually searched all indexes -nothing. I am willing to go page by page in the actual register, but there is no indication on the records as to which parish (i.e., the marriage records does not reveal the bride and groom's origins) - and that makes it very difficult. Any input would be much appreciated.

This information sounds promising.
My grandmother was Alice Istas Ahrendes, Octave's sister. I knew most of grandma's brothers and sisters, as I lived in Aurora.

I am also looking for Belgium history for John Istas. John worked in the family brewing business in Belgium prior to migrating to the US. I have not been able to find anything on his arrival. It has to be between the year 1869, when Omer (Homer)was born and 1886 when Octave was born.

You can contact me at jjune9@yahoo.com
June Hebert

Any recommendations for a professional researcher in Brussels? I am at a brick wall in a branch of the family tree that suggests a Belgian ancestor from Brussels (later family lived in Austria). I have no experience with research in Belgium, but have discovered that digitized records do not exist. I am therefore looking for a professional. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I was in Brussels this summer and came across the town of Overijse on the south and east side. There I found a restaurant named Masion Istas or Huis Istas. On the old pictures it also has Joseph Istas as the owner. Also on the photos there shows the building to have been a tobacco shop and perhaps a saloon. They used to brew beer there from what the locals told me.

To make a long story longer,,,
My father-in-law was Leo Ernest Istas, his father was Octave S. Istas, his father was John Istas, born 1845 in Belgium.

Does anybody know who John Istas' father would be?

Thank you.

I am looking for information on my family with the surname Mertens. My great grandfather was born in Schaffen (West Flanders?)in 1893, his name was Arthur Mertens. He moved to France where he met my great grandmother, Zea Bourla. They then moved to Brussells with my grandmother and great aunt. My great grandfather was a decorated war hero and owned a hardware store at 10 Eisenhower AVE. He had also been the president of a bank. I have some info on them but am looking for more. I also know that I still have family there and am curious to contact them. My grandparents and great grandparents came to America in the 1940s after the war.

Van Mechelin – I am trying to trace my Belgium ancestors and I am having difficulty finding any info like census etc. I am looking for a Gustave Van Mechelen born about 1848 his father was called Francois who was a calico printer I do not know his mothers name. He had a sister called Ellean who had a lace shop in an arcade in Brussels. I am not sure if the family may have lived or worked at rue des Chartreux . Gustave moved to London I am not sure when but he had his first child in 1881 at this time he was a Hat Maker. I can trace his life then on in England but I no little about his earler life & family in Brussels.

Hello,
The school was called Institut Commercial Funck and it was in the rue du Vautour, 69, 1000 Brussels but it does not exist anylonger. I believe you would have to contact the Institut Coremans. You could write to the Ville de Bruxelles and try to get a copy of your certificate as it was a state school. Good luck.

I would suggest that you contact the Belgian Embassy in Washington, D.C. They should be able to give you info on how to get a certificate for a living person.

If you are looking for deceased persons for your ancestry searches, you can go to the State Archives in Belium
http://arch.arch.be

Most of it is not in English, but you can probably find your way around by translating the website in www.babelfish.com
