Brussels racetrack

I have been researching a daughter line and found that 3 sisters had all married men from England in the late 1890s. Further investigations revealed that 2 of the 3 men were jockeys. The families lived in Tervuren, a village to the East of Brussels. Was there a horse racing track near Tervuren or in Brussels where the men could have worked in the time period from 1890 to 1910? If anyone knows about the track, could you let me know how I can find out more on the site?

I'm hoping someone has had experience with obtaining a birth certificate from the city hall in Ixelles. I have contacted the embassy and received phone and address but no email contact at all. I want to get the forms needed to request a copy of a birth certificate and the proper procedures, costs and acceptable payment methods. I don't speak french or flemish and wondered if anyone has some words of wisdom for me
Regards, Mia

My English grandparents, George Cullen and Elizabeth Bissell met and married in Brussels in 1894, they were both in Domestic Service, a coachman and nurse.

I have the addresses from which they were married, 2 bis rue d'Egmont and 58 Avenue des Arts, both in Brussels. I would like to know if I could find out something about their life in Brussels.
Lambert

My Great Grandfather, Joseph Lambert was born in Brussels, Belgium. He married my Great Grandmother Victorine Dewaele. They had my Grandmother, Alice Lambert. My Great Grandfather was killed in 1916 in WWI. I believe his parents were Camille Lambert and his wife's name was Mathilda. I am working on our family history and am at a bit of a road block with their family. During the war my Grandmother, Alice moved to Middelkerke ( Flanders ) to live with HER Grandparents, while her mother stayed in Brussels to work. Any information on their family would be greatly appreciated. It's hard as they all spoke different dialects of the language. My Grandmother came to America when she was 20 years old and her mother remarried to Cyril Feryn. My Grandfather was also from Belgium, but he was from Kortermark ( corermark ). He came over to America when he was very young. His name was Michel Cool, Parents were Joseph and Victorine Cool. They all settled in Lyon County, MN ( Marshall is the town ).

Thank you in advance for ANY information someone may have!
Cathy
otlakerat@tds.net

ISTAS, ALPHONSE-Brussells

We are searching for decendents of John Istas who immigrated to the US approx. 1897. These decendents were left behind in Belgium. There was a son who followed his father to the US, by the name of Omer Istas. Three children remained behind in the old country, Alphonse, Marie, and Elise. Last letters received by Alphonse were dated 1910-1923, last known address for Alphonse was 66 Rue Wayenberg, Bruxelle. We know that Alphonse had a son, Marcel Istas (Gistas?) Marcel had a daughter Denise. In 1922, Marcel may have been an officer in the Marines (World War 1), who trained in Australia, at a Belgium Training School. Are there any Istas'Surnames out there. Thank you.

I am looking for information on Michael Benoit POITIAUX born in Brussels, Belgium about 1771. I belive his parents to be Charles Louis POITIAUX and Maria Catherine DeStadt. Michael left Belgium as a teen and went to England. He then traveled in an orchestra and turned up as a refugee on St. Dominique before coming to Charleston, South Carolina. He played in an orchestra in Charleston and eventually moved to Richmond, Virginia. He married in Richmond, had seven children and died in March 1854.

I am looking for any information regarding the Newgas family in Brussels. My great grandmother, Dina Newgas, born in London, was educated there from the age of about 16. An Anna Newgas is shown, aged 23 in the 1901 census as having been born in Brussels, a German subject. The Newgas line originated near Frankfurt (Neugasse) and a key member is Henry Sawel Newgas, Dina's father. He had at least eleven children and lived in London and France. Did he also live in Belgium? Any information would be of great interest. I have a fairly comprehensive tree of the London family.

Seeking any information about Thomas Gray and his brother Charlesworth who were glass merchants working in Flanders (Brussels, Etterbeek, Haarlem) at the time of the battle of Waterloo. Thomas Wilson, the Haarlem cloth manufacturer befriended them. I am seeking copies of Thomas Gray's pamphlet "Obervations on a General Iron Railway" in other language(s) than English. It was published in England in 1820 - 1825. Thomas was writing it in Etterbeek in 1818 according to his friend Wilson. Nearing publication of this branch of Gray genealogy. All contributions acknowledged.

My father and uncle were both born in Brussels in 1926 and 1932. I have the names of where they lived and were born but can't find them on modern maps. I will be visiting Brussels in January and would like to see where they originated. The names of the roads the I have are as follows:
Chaussee de Louvain
Rue des Acacias
Place du tir National
Can anyone tell me if any of these names have changed and if so does anyone know what they are called now? Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I don't want to waste a visit to Brussels searching for these places when I can enjoy a beautiful city.
Thank you
Caroline

I will be in Brussels on May 11th and 12th of this year, and would like to know who I might contact in Brussels who could help me trace my great grandfather and grandmother, who left from Antwerp on the SS Pennland, arriving in New York on October 31, 1884. They were from Stockum, Belgium. They settled in Kansas City, Missouri USA. I have no idea where Stockum is located. His name was Mathias (Mathew) Kraft, and her maiden name was Louisa Tock. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Leonard Stonestreet

The Bruxelles city directories from 1948 - 1957 have entries for ARMENTOR at 8^ Blvd du Régent. A search now shows that address to be the headquarters of Electrabel, the Belgian energy company. Does anyone know if it is a modern building built after 1957. I would appreciate any other lookups of ARMENTOR in Bruxelles.. city directories after 1957 or census listings. Nancy

Henri Eloy Joseph LeRoy

I am trying to find family in Belgium that may be of my ancestors. My g.g.g.grandfather was Henri Eloy Joseph LeRoy of Belgium. He was born in Soignies on 12-1-1787 and died there on 1-4-1865. His obituary mentions family names such as Marouse, Francios,Bourdeaux,Bouilliava,DeBacker, L'Ecluse, Bosteela, Moyson and DePage. My g.g.grandmother was Albine LeRoy;b.1825;married a Jules Edward Brady(American name). Do not know his true surname and Brady is not mentioned in the obituary. Maybe one of the names listed above could be his true surname. Henri LeRoy was a doctor of great distinction and was a member of the Academy of Science. Dr. LeRoy was descended from one of the first families of Belgium. He was filled with honor and national credit the most exalted positions in his native city of Soignies, where he reached the very apex of distinction in his chosen profession of medicine. When still in the prime of his life, he was made the recipient of the much coveted m "Croix de fer." Afterwards he was decorated by the Belgium Monarch with the order of "Knoght of Leopold."

My mother was Marie Jose Philomene Eugene Ghislaine Gustin. She was born Nov.26,1919 in Belgium. Her father was Arthur Jean-Leon Gustin and her mother was Therese Marie Ghislaine. She married a Theodore Perry Freeman in Namur on June 13,1945. He was from Atlanta ,Georgia and in the military during World War II . They relocated to Chicago, Illinois in 1945. Any help finding my relatives or any connection to some one from there would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for info on Helene Goossens (could be her middle name). She was born Feb. 17, 1883 in Belgium (all I know) and died Aug. 8, 1959 in Detroit, MI. She married Theophiel Ryckaert in St. Joseph Co., IN on Sept. 16, 1905. I have postcards from Brussells dated 1931 and signed Gustave & Valentine Goossens (spelled 'Goessen'). I've been looking for over a year. I'm thinking that Helene must've been her middle name, as I can't find anything about her. I know she existed because I remember her; she was my great-great grandmother. Can anyone help with info? where to look in Belgium? ANYTHING?

Thanks in advance.

I finally found my grtgrandparents and their three children, who emigrated from Belgium to Kansas City, Mo. , arriving in NY City on Oct 31, 1884. I have several old photos that were taken in Bruexelles, one that I know is that of my grtgrandfather. His name was Mathias Kraft, and his wife was Louisa Tock. The photo that I have of her was taken in Arlon. My question; where do I start looking for the place they actually lived or left a record of themselves in Belgium. The notation of them on the ships manifest say they came from STOCKEM. Any help will be appreciated. Leonard Stonestreet

Can you help locate these people?
I am still seeking help locating the following individuals or their descendants. Each person was a member of the Comete Escape Line of the Belgium Resistance in World War II. They came to the aid of American pilot Lt. William D. Grosvenor after his P-47 crashed near Mariekierke, November 30, 1943. Grosvenor was hidden in Brussels until his capture in June of 1944. Please contact me if you recognize any of these names. I am co-producing a documentary about Grosvenor and the people in Belgium who helped him after his crash. I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone who may know of Mme. Claes-Frix. Many thanks......Ramona Kelly

Elza Raes

Jan Peters

Marcel Harnie

Marie Haine

Camille Leclef (possibly a priest)

Charles Hoste

Prosper Spilliaert

Alphonse Escrinier

Gaston Matthys (died 1990)

Jean Portzenheim

Mme. I'm curious who her parents are.
A lookup would be greatly appreciated.

For compensation can do research in The Hague,Utrecht or 's Hertogenbosch (NL).

Thanks in advance,
Ans.
