well sir,

I am an Inghels, here in the USA myself. My grandparents came over from Belgium shortly after WW2 dragging my dad and his sister with them. There are still a bunch of Inghels, and Engels, and Angles in the family tree. Sorry if no longer searching for an answer. I just recently came upon your search and created an account to say hello.

Hello and Bonjoir.
I am seeking the date of death of my great grandfather Francois Joseph Quewet and great grandmother Ursule (Ninane). I believed they may have died in Yvoir between 1880's to 1900. They lived in Yvoir around 1900's.

Pierre Scarcez

Hello,

I wonder if you anyone can assist me. I am trying to trace the roots of my g g grandfather, (Pierre or Petrus or Peteris) Scarcez, who emmigrated to England on 30 March 1849 from Belgium, via Seville. It seems that he obtained the passport for himself and his family from the Belgian Consul in Seville. His trade was a glass engraver.

The 1861 UK census has him noted as being born at Warie, which doesn't exist so is more likely to be Wavre, in about 1805 but the 1851 UK census has him born in Brussels in 1809.

His wife was Adele Marneuf, born 11 DEC 1808 in Ghent, Belgium. His fourth daughter, Adelaide became a dancer and subsequently married the world renowned magician, Alexander Herrmann, and ultimately became a highly respected magician in her own right.

I am new to all this and, apart from my lack of French language, I have no idea how to tackle this aspect of my research with Belgian records. I have done some basic searches but, so far, with no results.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This woman is not a relative, but her Belgian ID card (in both French and Walloon) was found in the WWI Army paybook of my great-grandfather, a member of the British 48th Highlanders Regiment.

I have tried searching all the usual ancestry suspects and it seems as though no one is looking for her and no one has her listed in their trees.

I would love to hear from someone in her family or otherwise find out what became of her. For a family member I'd be happy to send them a scan of the card.

Ancestors of Benjamin Gregoire Dit Nantais

Hello,
I have been researching about 2 1/2 years and have hit some errors in fact checking etc.
Benjamin Gregoire dit nantais Sr's father was Jean Pierre Gregoire b. 1739 d. 1805 married to Mary Anne Lepine b. 1747 d. 1782.
I am now stuck finding information on Jean Pierre's parents:
I believed them to be a Jean Pierre Gregoire Sr. & Mary Anne Leveille but have not been able to find any marriage proof ect on ancestry archives. I originally had most of the ancestors afrom Jean Pierre Sr. to Lyon, France. But now that I have been looking at the archives closer I see that most of them died in Naumur Belgium, which leads me to believe that Belgium is perhaps the next 3-4 generations of Gregoire before France possibly.
I foolishly entered information from other people that the dates don't even make sense of birth vs death and marriage dates. So I am starting over from Jean Pierre Sr. I have verified the other generations with many archives.
Thaks for any assistance.
I was told there was another daughter named Ann but I have no other information. If any one can tell me where to start that would be great thank you so much Wilma

Hello Pierre,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your message. I want to thank you for taking the time to write about the Belgian history. In many cases the history has affected my ancestors' lives. Do you know of a Belgian history timeline on the internet ?
I have found our ancestors' records back to 1750 in the Family History microfilm for Athus and Tontelange, Province de Luxembourg (now Belgium). As you probably know the villages are north of Arlon, Belgium.

The film for these church's records do not extend far beyond 1750. However the marriage record refers to the ancestors' parents for an earlier time. My other question is :
what church would the parents have attended before the churches of Athus and Tontelange existed ?
Please e-mail me at: koeunereunion@gmail.com for the
family surnames. Thank you for taking the time to write.
Best wishes for a good summer, Jeanne

Jeanne

You should tell me ho you are looking for exactly and where ?

Belgium has always been an invaded territory since Julius Caesar..France,Spain,The Netherlands and Austria always made their wars on OUR land cause they always wanted it and keep it ...That s why we had our own revolution in 1830, we were fed up being constantly invaded and our people killed and ruined....Our coutry is not an invention of the super powers , we earned it , there was nothing they could do ...we became independant in 1830. Our frontiers have changed a few times though.. People in the 16 ,17 ,18 th century were mainly farmers, poor people ith no education at all ...all wars on our territory almost starved it to death more than once..that s why some people emigrated ..Many ilnesses killed sometimes all people in a village ; the soil was also unproductive..and some parts of our countries went from hand to hand according to those winning the wars..That s also one of the reasons records are sometimes in different languages..

SO tell me who you re looking for, give me as much as u know so far...i ll tru helping you but won t promise to succeed
Best regards
Pascal

Hello Pascal,
Thank you for responding to my query. I have researched
my grandfather's family to the mid-1700s (before Napoleon) in the Province du Luxembourg. However I am having trouble finding the correct church microfilm. Also there is some confusion regarding the surname which was always written in French, now the old church records show a possible connection to the German spelling !!

So I am wondering what was specifically happening in Province du Luxembourg during the 1700s that would have affected the family to possibly change their name and/or their residence.

I would appreciate any suggestions you have for informa-
tion about this time period, and location.
Thank you, Jeanne

Pascal - merci. I will contact Michael Baudry. I was looking for the location because I was to visit the area several years back - unfortunately my trip has been delayed. Just a note - when I posted the original message in 2003 there was no such thing as google earth.

One brother was named Camille as well. Her father was a WWI veteren.
Surely there is a book about the history of the Benelux
countries. . . a history that would encompass the different rulers for that part of Europe. Any suggestions ?

Looking for the name Bourgaux in Charleroi 1860s-1880's.

My records show Michel Bourgaux(born about 1840) and Josephine DeGreve as parents. They had at least two children who were born in Charleroi:

Emile Joseph Bourgaux (born 26 Nov 1866 in Gilly according to obit) and Julia Stephanie Bourgaux (born 29 April 1876).

The family immigrated to the U.S. and eventually settled in Louisiana.

Any help is appreciated.

Did Belgium keep records of emigration? My great great grandfather Henri Schortgen and his family emigrated to the USA in about 1860. Would there be any records showing what members of the family came with him and exactly the dates involved? He was from Udange - records, if any, perhaps in Arlon?.
