A Michael Matter placed lost livestock notices in the local German papers in 1847. These are obscure clippings indexed as direct evidence of our pioneer ancestors in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). A letter from Cammin was being held for him at the local post office in 1860 (clearly someone in the old homeland wasn't aware he had died). I've indexed these lists of stale-dated letters published prior to their return to the originating post office in Europe. There are other possible other matches to your list as well: Frank, Fred., and Gottlob J. Matter. There are about 50 occurrences of the surname in the index, and other surnames referenced with Matter are Heidtke Luebke Staudigel Meyer Wille.
