URNER/1712-1903

Hello,
I'm currently studying the URNER family who migrated around 1650 from Switzerland to Alsace where they had been settled for three centuries.
At different periods of time some members of this family emigrated to the States. The most researched are Ulrich URNER and his three sons : Jacob (1693-1744), Hans (1694-1743) and Martin (1695-1755) who landed in Germantown, PA around 1712 and where Martin founded the Coventry Brethren Church in 1723.

But who could tell me about the other members of the family who arrived later on:
a) 1744: Heinrich U. bap. June 18. 1702 left Rifferswil (ZH-Switzerland) and came directly for the US
b) 1848: Jean (John) born Sept 9, 1813 in Sainte Marie aux Mines (Alsace-France) married in 1845 arrived in NYC in 1848 and was seen in San Francisco in 1872
c) 1872: Robert born July 10, 1853 in Sainte Marie aux Mines was in LeHavre (France) in 1872, did he managed to sail to the US?
d) 1904: Jules born Oct 20, 1869, married in 1898, arrived in NYC in 1903 but may have sail back as he died in Alsace in 1911.
The family name URNEr is not wide spread and I assume there is only one root to this family whatever the period and whereever they were coming from (Switzerland, France, Germany and Banat)

Henrich or Henri KARCHER b. abt 1835-1840

Looking for connections to Henri or Henrich Karcher in probably Wolfskirchen, Alsace-Lorraine not sure if that area is called Bas-Rhin or not. What little our family has gathered is Henri may have been illegitimate. According to family members who have tried to get records, his mother may have been called Karoline, Katherine, or Kristina Karcher and he took her surname. Not sure if they were spelled with a C or K but I noticed a great many French spelled the common names with K's, that are spelled in most English Speaking areas with "C's".

Henri married Katherine Jacobs sometime around 1863. Their one son(there may have been more..not 100% positive), Christian Karcher was born Oct 3, 1863.

Now I may have this all backwards, as to the real story. My grandparents have been dead a long time, but I have a solid birth date on Christian Karcher as the Oct 3,1863. Is there a source of reference I can check for a solid birth record in Wolfskirchen? I have Jacobs, Qurins, Wittman's, Saurer's, and Osswald's, and Jungs in my family in the Alsace Area. My grandmother's side of the family was called Jung,(Young in US) and supposedly the family name goes back to French Aristocracy. But you know family stories, and what really is sometimes. But perhaps it is true.

My grandparent's Henry & Selma (Jung) Karcher emigrated to Wisconsin(central USA) in 1923.

I had a kind gentleman do some research for me and he sent me back records in German, except I don't know of anyone who can transcribe them.

Can someone help?

Thank You
Penny Karcher

If anyone could help me with a search of the 1836 census database it would be much appreciated. I am a student, so the price of the census CD-ROMs kind of puts them, unfortunately, out of my reach.

The search is for an Ohlmann or Ohlman family. Brothers are Leopold b. ~1923 (age 16) and Joseph b ~1831 (age 5), fairly certain that father is Joseph and mother is Marie (unsure of maiden name). I would also guess they have other children (I know of only three brothers who emigrated, but they are about ten years apart).

Many thanks for the trouble.

Looking for suggestion on what I should do next. I just confirmed that my ancestors (Adam and Sitter/Sittler) married in 1831 and had their last three children in Sand, Bas-Rhin, before immigrating to USA in 1846. Source was LDS microfilm, “France, Bas-Rhin, Benfield (Canton) - Civil Registration - Indexes (birth, marriage, death).” Family was German Catholic. Questions are:

a. Since these index records (birth, marriage, and death in 10 year periods) were filmed in Strasbourg, are the details filed locally, if so where to begin the search, commune, canton, where?

b. Where are the 1836 Census records for Sand and who to contact?

c. Where are the church records (1800-1840) for Sand?

Thanks for your time!

Ron Adams

So I need another way to search. There has to be some sort of record on him.
I do know that my GF Paul Louis Lion was born in NJ in 1894, so sometime within those 24 years Alfred also came to the US... but again I cannot find any records on that either.

Would someone know if Puberg was in Alsace France from the years 1770-1838.
I am researching Peter Geyer who is said to have been from Puberg France. Peter, his wife Catherine (Faver), son John Nicholas (born 1794) and other children are said to have resided in Puberg prior to going to America.
Would Puberg still exist and where would the records such as birth, marriage, death and census information for this community be archived today?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Diefenbronn family.

The Diefenbronn side of my family tree seems to be limited and I'm hoping that maybe I'll be able to find out more here. Perhaps even find some relative I did not know existed.

My great grandmother Magdalene/Madeleine DIEFENBRONN (1864-1918) was married to Nicholas SPIEGLER (1853-1921). They lived in Marienthal, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France.
They had seven children that survived into adulthood- Josephine, Joseph, Eugene, Marie, August/Auguste, Charles, and Anna. Charles, my grandfather, and his sisters, Marie, Josephine and Anna immigrated to the United States and settled in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The remaining sons stayed in Marienthal and possibly the other surrounding areas and raised families.

Magdalene/Madeleine had a brother, Antoine DIEFENBRONN (1861-1923), who immigrated to the United States and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. He married Helen Kloes and had six children - William, Dora, Mary, Elizabeth, Emma and Ella all of whom were born in St. Louis as well.

According to birth records I found it gives Antoine DIEFENBRONN and Rosine SCHOTT listed as the parents of Antoine Diefenbronn. His birth is recorded as happening in Gries, Bas-Rhin, Alsace.

If any of this sounds familiar or if anyone can offer any suggustions I would very much like to hear from you.

Alsace emmigration Wuster/Wooster/Wurster

Family lore suggests my Wuster/Wooster/Wurster ancestors came from Alsace and somehow got to Peoria, Illinois by 1850 when they appear on the census as Mary Wooster b about 1805, Mary Wooster Meyer b about 1823,Jacob Wooster b about 1823 and Helena Wooster b about 1832. The 1850 Census reports indicate they were from France, and later reports sometimes say Germany and that seems to fit. I have searched like crazy but can't find any of them on a boat to America. I find a few possible individuals in immigration records from 1830 to 1850, but the record says they are from Germany. I can't seem to find any that show Wuster/ Wooster/ Wursters from France. I have tried all the spellings of the surname that I can possibly think of, but I just can't get anywhere. I need some fresh thoughts if anyone would care to chime in.

Research Help Needed: Morkes Family in Alsace-Lorraine

Hello-

I am looking to begin researching the Morkes family in Alsace-Lorraine, but could use some help or tips for getting started. Here's what I know:

Anton Morkes was born sometime around 1862. His death certificate says in Bohemia, possibly near Chrudim, although there is no parish record of his birth in the town's archives. Census records indicate he may have been born in Alsace-Lorraine.

His father was also named Anton Morkes. The name of his mother is not known.

Anton (1862) emmigrated to the US in 1879, travelling through Hamburg-Lahavre and eventually settling in Chicago, where he worked as a cabinet maker. He did not marry until several years after arriving in the US.

At some point before coming to the US, likely between 1862-1879, the family lived in Alsace-Lorraine for a period of time, but the trail is lost there. I do not have a town name in Alsace-Lorraine, and the above information is most of what I have to work with.

I know there are some registers for the Alsace-Lorraine area during the time period in question, but really have no idea where to start and would greatly appreciate the advice of anyone that can point me in the right direction or assist in my search.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Joe Verzal
Anybody researching Herbsheim? I’m trying to establish a relationship among these families: ADAM, SITTLER, DRENDEL, JENDER. They are part of the German Catholic families from Herbsheim who settled just west of Chicago in Naperville, Illinois, in 1840s. Doubt they emigrated as a group but probably over a decade or so.

They all have ADAM family ties but I have yet to find evidence in Naperville they are related. The first couple married in Alsace with the last two in Herbsheim: Xavier ADAM to Theresia Sittler about 1830, Barbe ADAM to Antoine Drendel in 1833, and Marie ADAM to Xavier Jender in 1815. Xavier and Theresia ADAM are my ancestors.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I've been searching for yearson this one. My GGGG grandfather, John LeGore was originally from Alsace close to the Rhine River. He was born in 1755 and in the states by 1775 in Pennsylvania, where he enlisted in the military to fight in the Rev War. It is possible he was in Quebec prior and was a sympathizer to the American cause. Rumored to be the aide-de-camp to Washington during the Battle of White Plains. Also rumored to have come over with Lafayette (although dates don't match). Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason LeGore

Matthew Boor born Alsace-Lorraine? 1847

This is my brick wall! My greatGrandfather Matthew Boor first 'appears' on public records when he married Mary Ann Alice Parkinson in Darlington in 1873. Family legend, a dotty aunt, has it that Matthew was from Alsace-Lorraine. However on the 1880 & 1890 census birthplace is shown as Germany. As we can not find Matthew in the census for England census for 1871 did he come to England at the time of the Franco-German war and his birthplace in A-L was ceded to Germany.
Is Matthew Boor a A-L name or an anglicised version? Matthew was born 1847 and father was a Peter Boor a farmer (on marriage certificate).
Any help, guidance or suggestions appreciated.
Colin Parkinson, Ashurst, Southampton England

Mallo Ancestry

Hello,
I am inquiring about my great great grandfather Charles Thiebold Malle or Mallo, born 1835 in Alsace Lorraine (or possibly Bavaria), and immigrated to New York around 1854. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Hauck, born 1836 in Bavaria. I do not know if they were married in Europe or the US. They eventually settled in Michigan, with a large family of 9 children. The surname appears as Milton in Hempsted, NY, finally becoming Charles Thiebold Mallo Sr. in Three Rivers, MI. A zip file with documentation including a picture is available at:

http://www.hometown.aol.com/fmalleaux/records.html

My cousin was actually researching this for several years, and I just recently joined with her efforts. Working backwards from the 1920 census, and the family picture, we find Mallo, Charles T., Sr., 84 yrs. old, living in Three Rivers, Michigan, with one daughter Louise. The record clearly states Alsace Lorraine as his place of birth, also his mother's and father's place of birth. The immigration date should be about 1854. The 1880 and 1870 records indicate them living in the same place, only with his wife Mary Elizabeth and more children. Charles' birthplace is listed as France, and Mary's as Germany.

In the above mentioned zip file, you will find a folder named 1859 New York City Business Directory. I have included the first few pages, which show the index. On page 4, you will note Carriage Makers and the pages they are listed on. Beginning on page 330, we find the section T. Charles Mallo is listed under. I have included pages 330, 331, 332, and 333. We find Charles listed on page 333 as living in Hempstead. Now searching the 1860 census, we find one Charles Milton, in Hempstead, same first name, age and birthdate as our Charles Mallo from the later Michigan census records, and his occupation is given as wheelwright (carriage maker). His wife Eliza's first name, age, and birthdate also match with later census records from Michigan. Then we find the children William, Eliza, and Louise whose first names, ages and birthdates match with later census records from Michigan. This seems a bit more than coincidence. We also have obituary records indicating that Caroline was born in 1863, Far Rockaway Long Island, which I believe was then in Queens County, and Hempstead Township. My search for a marriage record has been fruitless. I contacted the Town Clerk in Hempstead, NY. They sent me a genealogical application from NY State Dept. of Health. Their records begin in 1881, surely not quite far enough back. Queen's County 11th. Judicial Supreme Court has marriage records back to 1847, but I think these are only available to the court officials.

OK, so you if you are still with me, you're probably wondering where I got the surname Malleaux. This began with Charles Mallo, who is the youngest, and also my great grandfather. According to the 1990 Census, he's married to Eva Mallo. The marriage was short lived. In 1910 we find his wife listed as Eva Malleaux, widowed, although we know Fredrick was very much alive. We have his W.W.I draft registration card from 1917. Actually they were separated with two children, Marjorie who was adopted, and Frank, Sr., who was my grandfather. It is in this 1910 census where the surname Malleaux first appears. Her sister Grace Darling and the two children are living with her. Eva Darling was her maiden name.

There's an NY passenger list in the zip file. One of the entries is Theobald Malle, age 19, from Bavaria. The 1835 birthdate on the search result from Ancestry.com, matches with my great great grandfather's. I understand from my somewhat brief study of the history of Alsace, that in 1814, parts of the present day Alsace region were actually in Bavaria. It seems Alsace was in a feudal state during the middle ages, reaching back to the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. Further discussion of Alsacean history is beond the scope of this posting.

I would like to enter my ancestors, Charles Thiebold and Elizabeth Hauck Mallo into the Alsace immigration index. The spellings of their given names and surnames may vary as described above. I have tried to be as accurate as possible. Again, documentation for all of the above information is included in a zip file at:

http://www.hometown.aol.com/fmalleaux/records.html

Thank you very much in advance for any information you can provide.
Frank Malleaux III

Louis/Lewis Knab of Rittershoffen, Alsass

I have been trying for a year to find my Knab ancestors in Rittershoffen. Here is what I know for certain: my g-grandfather Louis/Lewis Knab emigrated from Rittershoffen, Bas-Rhin, Alsass to Marion County, Ohio. This was in 1872, based on the Trinity Lutheran Church record in Ft. Recovery. I have been unable to find Louis in the immigration records. There is a Louis Knab in 1876 in Philadelphia, but I do not think that is the correct person. In 1878 Louis married Mary Yaeger in Marion County. They had 5 children before he died on 6 Aug 1892 at the age of 41 y, 4 m, 9 d. He is buried in Green Mound Cemetery in Ft. Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. His name is spelled Lewis on his tombstone and he is variously listed as Lewis, Louis and Ludwig in the Trinity Church records. The IGI indicates that a Louis Knab of the correct age may have been married in Rittershoffen to a Madeleine Arbogast on 11 May 1869. There was a daughter, also named Madeleine, born to this marriage, but there is no indication in the church or civil records in this county of my Louis having been married before. The grandmother with whom I lived was one of Louis's daughters and she certainly didn't have any inkling that her father may have been married before. I found one vague reference to a Jacques Knab who might have been a brother of Louis. I would be so grateful if someone could help me trace Louis's roots in Rittershoffen. I have detailed information on his descendents, if anyone is interested.

I am researching a tree for a friend in which the name "Youngyilligas" appears. I suspect this is an Americanized spelling of a name.
I am looking for Mannhardt's living in or near Lauterbourg. A gentleman once sent me the 1836 census info I needed on the family of Antoine Mannhardt b. 1787 and his wife, Barbe Philipps b. 1798. I have not been able to go beyond Antoinne and have no idea who his parents were. I only have the name of one sibling, Marguerite, b. abt 1785. I am hoping someone can look at the census and provide me with information on other Mannhardt's living in Lauterbourg, as they might be siblings or his parents. Their name was spelled Mannhard on the census. The # of n's, d's and t's can vary with this name. Thank you very much.

Would like to exchange information on these surnames in Alsace, Lorraine, Switzerland and southwest Gemany, 1700s and earlier. I believe my probable immigrant ancestor, Christian Maurer, came to Pennsylvania on the ship Polly, 1765, and settled in Berks County, later Northumberland Co. and what is now Snyder Co., later Wayne Co. Ohio.
Christian Maurer's son, Christian, married Elisabeth Erni in the 1790s in Pa., and their son Johannes Maurer married Elisabeth Baer in about 1819. I think my Maurers and some of these allied lines originated in Switzerland, quite possibly the Berner Oberland, but moved to Alsace before emigrating to America.
Also on ship Polly was a GEMBERLING from Alsace, who later lived in what is now Snyder Co. Pa.
I speak German, too, but only a few words of French.
Thanks to all who sent e-mails to me on this subject in years past.
I am an American, but have lived in Germany for 30 years, near Heidelberg, one hour from Alsace.

Goetsch Spelling Variations?

I believe Anthony Goetsch may have sponsored my German-speaking Catholic ancestor when he emigrated from Elsass to Illinois in 1846. Having failed finding where my blacksmith ancestor lived in Elsass, I’m going to start searching passenger lists to see if I can find Goetsch but would like to be sure to include all variations of this name. If you are Goetsch researcher, I would very much appreciate knowing the variations you have encountered in France. Thanks for your time! Ron Adams

"The tradition handed down to me by my ancestors is that previous to the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697 my ancestors lived in Alsace, or to be more accurate, in the city Strasbourg. ... He emigrated to America and settled first in New Jersey, a short distance north of and east of the city of Philadelphia, Pa. exactly in what year I an unable to say, but tradition says during the reign of Queen Anne, which was from 1702-1714."

Thus states the "Autobiography of Calvin Smith" written by a first cousin of my 5th great grandfather.

Great uncle Calvin does not mention the name of the Schmidt/Smith ancestor that emigrated to America. His grandparents were Abraham Smith (1747-1838) and Catherine Davenport Smith (1754-1845). My 6th ggparents are Abraham Smith (1769) and Polly Truesdale Smith (1782-1847). I descend through Chauncey Billings Smith (1819-1891) and Adaline Elizabeth Butler Smith (1831-1896).

If anyone connects up with this line or has Schmidt/Smith ancestors who emigrated to NJ from Strasbourg as indicated above, please contact me at glenbeth@phonewave.net

Andreas & Christopher Buettel

Hi,I am seeking the connection with my Buettel ancestor in Australia, back to his origin in Alsace Lorraine in France, early to mid 1800's. Andreas Buettel, born abt 1838, arrived in Maryborough QLD Australia in 1861 & died there in 1928. He married a lady, Margareth Leubert or Seubert, possible Alsacian, who he met on the voyage to Australia. All I know is that in Alsace Lorraine he had been, by occupation a Cordonnier, a maker of quality shoes.
His father Christopher Buettel, likely was as well. I don't know whether they owned their own business, or worked for someone else. Andreas also had served as a sergeant of Cavalry, in the time of Emperor Louis Napoleon.
In short I haven't had any success so far with immigrant records this end, or the hamburg shipping lists. Would invite suggestions.

Schandel in Alsace?

I am trying to discover where the Schandel family originated. Wilhelm Schandel and Henrietta Schilling (both born 1820s) emigrated to Minnesota with their children. I had thought they came from Prussia/Posen, as their daughter Amelia married a Huebner from there, but the name Schandel seems more indigenous to Alsace and there is in fact a story that there is French in the family, which would be natural to Alsace. Any information or suggestions welcomed!

My husbands great-grandmother's name is listed as Catherine Bindscheattle on documents he located. She is from Tonawanda New York. Born about 1870. It seems she was married twice. The first marriage produced on son, last name of Hinn ( Helm or Heim) it is difficult to decipher. The second marriage was to Henry C. Wolf. Henry was born in 1866 in France and arrived in New York about 1875. Catherine's father was born in France, but her mother was from New York. Can anyone help trace this side of my husbands family?

Looking for a French surname for Evans

I am looking for information on my gg grandfather John Evans. On the census info I have after 1880, (cant find anything prior) it always states that he was born in Germany in 1838 and emigrated to the USA in 1852. In the 1910 census for his son, it states John as being French German, thus I am suspecting Alsace-Lorraine? His wife Mary b. 1839 in New York states her parents were from Alsace-Lorraine

Does anyone have any suggestions for a French variation of the name Evans?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sara Jayne
Has anyone searched for Civil Records in Mulhouse France (Haut-Rhin, Alsace)? I am looking for a search for death records in the 1877 to 1895 time frame, when the area belonged to Germany. I understand the archive has indexes in 10 year time periods. THe LDS has only filmed deaths up to about 1872. You can order online from the archive, but only after 1902.

All the genealogy websites for this area are only in French. I was hoping to find a researcher in this area.Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi, I'm trying to locate what village etc in Alsace Lorraine, my ancestor Andreas Buettel born abt 1838 emigrated from in abt 1860,61. He settled in QLD Australia. His father Christopher & his family remained, but in 1880 his niece, Susannah Barbara Buttel emmigrated to join his family. I wonder if someone could have a look for me at the Alsace Immigration Book. Essentially I'm wanting to find his village, where by occupation he was a cordonnier, & to research the family line backwards from there. I've had virtually no luck with immigration records in Australia, or the Hamburg port etc.
Would grateful of any information. L.S.

My immigrant ancestor is paternal great grandfather Michael Peter OSTER b 29 Sep 1827 Zinswiller Alsace to Peter and Marie Anne (WALTER) OSTER. They married 22 Nov 1819 in Zinswiller. Peter was the son of George and Marie Eve (BACH) OSTER. Marie Anne WALTER was the daughter of George Marks & Marie Anne (BREINER) WALTER.

That is all I know - I have no more dates nor siblings. Any information or any clues for finding more information will be most appreciated. Nancy Oster Heydt, FL
