Let me add that after the French Revolution in 1792 going up to present times the government of France required that all births, marriages and deaths as well as divorces and adoptions be recorded by the mayor with copies going to the departemental and federal government levels.
You can find detailed information for each person using the "l'état civil" records. Many of these records have been filmed by the Mormons and are online using the Archives of each Département in France.
