Am trying to confirm that my "DeBusk" (as it is spelled now) came from the Normandie area to South Carolina US about the year 1685. The story that has been passed down through the generations is that our DeBusk ancestor came from the village of Varengeville in Normandy, near Dieppe and his wife is supposed to have come from LaRochelle. The earliest name I have is Jacob DeBusk born about 1734. I am descended from his son Elijah DeBusk, Sr. born about 1760.

Anyone out there that can shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

La Valette, Normandy?

Does anybody know of a Huguenot church near La Valette, Normandy in the late 1600's or around 1700? First question is which La Valette? (It just means Little Valley.) It is possibly that it is the few houses called La Valette near Surville, Manche, Normandy but could be any La Valette.
In the Quakers Church minutes, the burial of Charles Francis TIMMONS, M.D. on 22-Jul-1754 lists his birthplace as La Valette, Normandy, France. I assume his French name would have been Timon. He is buried at the French Huguenot flax drying glenn near Edenderry, Ireland just down the Largan river from the French Huguenot linen weaving center at Lurgan.

Ray

Can anyone tell me what years the French Census was taken & a sorce if possible. I did a brief "google" search without sucess. I am particularly interested in the period between 1813 (when my GGGgrandfather Lo Angelique Maurice married first wife in Cerences, Manch, Normandie, France) and 1827 when his second child by second wife was born in Isle of Jersey.
Somewhere in between, he had a child Peter Maurice, born about 1824, who's birth doesn't show up in either Manche or Isle of Jersey.
Len

Jaeggy ancestry

I was surfing the internet yesterday when I came across your Jaeggy inquiry from last year and thought I could help. Earlier this year I received a similar inquiry from a friend of mine who is a Jaeggy descendent.

The one thing I can say with certainty is that Blasius Jaeggy was born in Alsace. This is clear from the various federal census entries.

The problem is which town in Alsace. According to the Alsace Emigration book by Cornelia Schrader-Muggenthaler a Marc or Mace Jaeggy traveled to the US bound for Texas around 28 Nov 1850. This Jaeggy came from Hirtzfelden.

However, Blasius aka Pleasant Jaggy's civil war service record states "Volunteer Enlistment -- State of Lousiana -- Town of New Orleans -- I, Pleasant Jaggy born in Hirts ?iden or Heiterville (its a little vague) in the State of France aged 18 years with occupation of a farmer do hereby acknowledge to have volunteered this 27th day of February 1864 to serve as a soldier to serve in the United States of America for the period of one year." Jaeggy was enlisting to serve in the Second Texas Cavalry a Union unit. There are other references to Heitsville as place of birth. Unfortunately there is no town named Heitsville in Alsace that I can find. There is a Heiteren, however, not far from Hirtzfelden.

Recently my friend went to Hirtzfelden and obtained a copy of Marc Jaeggy's birth certificate dated 1816 with Franz Josef named as father. I have also come across a web site for Jaeggy's in Oberentzen in Alsace which is also near to in Hirzfelden

I note that you have a precise date 3 Feb 1847. I would appreciate knowing where you obtained that.

Sincerely yours,

Frank Buchholz

Hello,
I am looking for information on the Poindextre (or variations in spelling) family who originated in the Normandy area, possibly the Coutances district. Poingdestres can be traced back to the 15th century in Jersey Isle, Channel Islands, and there is good evidence that they first came from Normandy. I would like to find out more about the immigrants to Jersey. Does anyone have information, ideas, suggestions? They intermarried with various families, including Messervy, Effard, De Caumont, Nicolle, and Hamptonne.
Thanks in advance!
Kim Spangrude

Will of Nicholas Fontaine - London 1583

I have recently found the will of Nicholas Fontaine probated in London 1583.

This Nicholas Fontaine may be the son of Jean de la Fontaine (ca.1485 St. Lô, Manche, Normandie - 1584 Manche, Normandie) and Nicole d'Arguillieres (ca. 1500 France -1584 France). If so, his birth and death dates are most likely: born bet. 1519 and 1530 in Normandie, and died after 26 January 1583 (when the will was probated) in England.

His siblings would then probably be: François, René, Michel, Philippe, Madeleine, Marguerite, Jeanne, Guillaume, Marie, Artus, Georges and an older brother whose name is unknown - all born in Normandie.

Other people mentioned in the will: Marguerite, first wife; Adriene Heindrieg, second wife; Marguerite, sister; Nicholas Fontaine, son; Mary Fontaine, daughter; John Lyonblon, son-in-law; Denys Le Blancq, notary public; and Godefroy de Dagnourte (relationship to testator unreadable, possibly business partner).

I have posted both images of the original record and the transcription in GeneaNet. You can access through the following link: http://doc.geneanet.org/voir_actes.php?mode=voir_acte

Karen
DUCLOS Julien - born approx 1780 Valognes, Dept de la Manche

I'm travelling to France in October/Novemer 2007 and would like to find evidence of my ancestors there. I have my g-g-g-grandfather born in Valognes approx 1780. He died aged 63 in Pondicherry, India, on 13 June 1843.

His parents are Michel DUCLOS and Marie CRETAUX - I have no further info on them.

Julien married Marie Jeanne Colombe JAVON (born 30 August 1800, Pantin, Dept de la Seine, France) on 27 Sept 1827 at Saint-Denis, Ile Bourbon. She died on 11 May 1885 at the Convent Holy Infant Jesus, Singapore. He was a trader who moved around a lot. They lived in Mauritius and had 6 known children.

I have no evidence of when they arrived in Mauritius or Ile Bourbon and on which ship, but I would dearly love to get back further in France so that I can find some connection there for my visit.

Is there anyone out there who can help me get any further back in France? I would dearly love to place my ancestors there and their parents. I'll be eternally grateful to you.
Regards,
Lyn Duclos

Dono is a somewhat common name in Normandy which may have
been a personal name in medieval times. Although it can mean
gift in Latin, some sources define it as early Germanic. Any cooments
regarding this name will be helpful

Vandross's from Normandy

I have been working on the genealogy of my fathers family ( Vandross) and i found the following information on a website:

The vandross family can trace their ancestors back to the ancient territories of France between the 11th and 12th centuries. The vandross family traces their ancestral roots back to French origin, and first appeared in ancient medieval records in Normandy .

That from very early on the vandross family not only held lands and estates in France but were also actively allied with other influential families. They also branched out into other territories and holdings, before taking the long voyage to the new world. .

I was wondering if any one knew how i could find out more information the vandross ancestry in France or how i can be sure that the name is french. One of my cousins thought it was a German name. Thanks in advance for your help Chris, my email is vchristianman@hotmail.com

My Great Grandparents were John George and Catherine Leveline.

Census records have them coming from Bavaria in 1835 or 1836, first to New York and then to Hamilton, Ohio. I can not locate them on any passenger lists.

I have never run across anyone else with this surname that was not a descendant of theirs. I think the name was changed somehow when they arrived in the US.

I do know that some people with this name came from France and went to the UK in the early 1800's..

Would anyone have suggestions as to what the surname in Germany or France might have been?

The name was pronounced as Leave Line.

Any help will be most appreciated.
Vikings, Normans and family migrations

For several years now I have suspected that our deManleigh/deMandley/deManley/Manley/Manly lines were descendants of those early Vikings who settled in Normandy and accompanied William on his "adventure" to England in 1066. Once in England, they migrated out to Wales, Ireland, Scotland and, eventually the colonies.

The surname does appear on the 3 most accepted forms of historical documentation for those times, the "Falaise Rolls", the "roll of Battle Abbey" and the "Domesday Book" which would help back up the theory.

Because of the brick walls so many of us have encountered in this research, we decided to begin a DNA project (as mentioned in a different message on this board). The results are just now begining to come in and seem to back up that theory! We have found, with only 2 of the tests return to date, that we have exact DNA matches to others out there in France, England, Wales, Ireland & Scotland, with matches for The Isle of Man and Shetland only 1 generation removed.

I have not really been able to concentrate on any possible connection for our family in France to date, but now believe it bears closer scrunity.

Since I am not at all familiar with researching records in Normandy/France, I would be most grateful for any suggestions out there.
