Hello! I'm Jose A. Tollinchi. I was borned in Ponce, PR. My grandfather was Dimas Tollinchi from Yauco, PR. The Tollinchi surname is not Italian. It is from Corcega, which is a French Island south of Italy. A lot of puertorricans are under the false impression (including myself until recently) that some of our names are Italian, when infact they are French. If you go to the Yahoo! French web site and type the name Tollinchi you will see a lot of people with the name. You will not get this result in the Yahoo! Italy site. I have maintained e-mail with Tollinchi in France, Germany, and Venezuela. A guy named Charles Tollinchi in France explained to me that the name is Corcegan NOT Italian. He was very offended that I thought the name was Italian.

In 1822, a member of the Negroni Family (Anton Francesco Negroni Mattei) came to Puerto Rico (Yauco) and established the Negroni Family there. I am searching for any information on a Juan Guilfo. This last name may have been phonetically spelled, as I have found it spelled numerous ways. My ancestor was Juan Guilfo, born 1756 in Corsica, Italy, which is how it is stated and spelled in the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge, LA Vol 2 marriage, baptism and burial records. I have found where possibly two of his sons may have gone to Puerto Rico around 1804 to 1815 to live with family there. Juan's parents are listed as Antoine Ghilfuchy and Maria Streglia, Italianos in these records. Any information or direction as to where I might find information is much appreciated.

Reportedly a "noble" family from Corsica by the end of the XVIII century, which had to flee Corsica due to the French Revolution and it's anti-noble spirit. Has anyone heard the name ZAMAFTA (or similar) associated w/ Corsica, either as a name-place or as a family name...? Any info or suggestion greatly appreciated...

I'm Corsican but I wish we were still part of Italy. We had throughout history been a part of Italy one way or another. Our last names are Italian, our language is a dialect of Italian. Napleon's family was from Pisa and Corsica. We should revolt and vote again for autonomy from France. Then we can start the process of reunifying with our mother country Italia!!!!

I'm interested to learn about a DELEPIANI / DE LEPIANI / DELLEPIANI family from Corsica in the 1700s. One of my ancestors, "Eugenio de Lepiani" was living in Venezuela by 1787. Several distant branches of the family have the same "oral tradition" that the family originates from Corsica (perhaps from the Genoa area before coming to Corsica)

I would like to know of any organization, historical society, etc. in Corsica or elsewhere that could have records (such as birth/bapism, marriage and death) that could aid my genealogical research.

I am a great great grand-daughter of Francois Ferrandini who was born in Corsica in 1855.

According to family legend he was the youngest son of a vineyard owner and left to seek his fortune. He married a swiss girl from Lausanne called Louise (surname unknown) and moved to Bristol, England.

Does anyone have any information about the remaining Ferrandini family in Corsica, or the swiss connection ? We would also like to track down any details of their marriage - place, date, etc.

One of my grndaunts was Juana Badea Echevarria.
She married or was in a relationship with a man who arrived from CORSIGA in the 1800s.
His name was, DOMINGO MASSINI, OR MASINI PIAZZA. As far as I know they lived in Yauco, when the boys were born abt 1898 and 1905. The boys are listed with the maternal surname, not the paternal name, Daniel Badea and Francisco Badea. My grndaunt already had a son by a previous relationship,
his name was ,JUAN BADEA.

I am at my wit’s end, so ANY information or ideas that anyone could suggest would be greatly appreciated.

My great-great-great grandfather was said to have come from Corsica and settled in Mississippi. It is said (from older family members) that he was well educated, had an accent and NEVER spoke of his homeland. Other than one postcard with water on it, and in a different language, from Corsica, nothing was ever brought up about where he was from.

The only information that I can find out about him was from the 1880 census:
William A. Williams. birth Corsica– 1-Sept-1843 (also found as 1841), death 10-Mar-1907 Amite Co. Mississippi. Married to my ggg-grandmother Ann, His occupation was a teacher.
Parents: Father Birthplace: France, Mother Birthplace: Switzerland

I have been told that ‘Williams’ is not exactly a common name found there. And my inability to read/write French has somewhat hampered my search. =(

I have read part of the Tollinchi's post that you presented here in Ancestry.com back in 2002, I wonder if you can tell me, how my last name Tollinche change.. My great-grandfather was Tiburcio "Tollinche" he used to live in Peñuelas..he was agriculturist and he was owner of a coffee grower property.
My grandfather (one of Tiburcio's oldest child) was Dr. Jorge R. Tollinche Rodriguez, my grandmother was Mariana Puig. My father is Jorge Luis Tollinche Puig.

Can you tell me more, about the history of this family or can you referred me any book that I can look over...? I really want to know about this because; it's part of me that I do not really know. Not including the missing part of my grandmother who was from Spain and I do not have solid information. I have lots of photos of before and after World War II, Spain Civil War, but nothing else... My grandparents used to be very private I believed this is because affliction and pain that provoked that time. I was a child when my grandmother past away, this is way I never had the opportunity to ask her about this.

Rumor has it that his ancestor hid as a stowaway on a ship headed for Puerto Rico due to some kind of "persecution".... does anyone have any clue what they may be talking about?

Spelling Corsican last names

In Corsica, the correct spelling of Corsican last names ends with the letter "i". However, when the Corsicans arrived in Puerto Rico, many Spanish functionaries would write the Corsican last names ending with the letter "y" because in Spanish "y" was considered both a consonant and a vowel. Spanish preferred to have last names end in a consonant and therefore would write with a "y" at the end. Some Corsicans would not complain and would continue to end their last name with the letter "y". Nonetheless, the majority would correct the error and insist that their last names be spelled by ending with the letter "i".

My family came to Australia from Corsica over 120 years ago. I have some information but need someone with knowledge of Corsican history and culture to look over the information and guide me.

My great grandfather was Giovanni Cortesi FANCELLI. He was born around 1860 or so in Bastia Corsica. I cannot find his birth certificate but there is a Marie CALVELLI married to an Andre FANCELLI in Bastia at that time who have a child named Jean.

The only other record of a FANCELLI in Australia is Orlando FANCELLI who came out the same time and I think might be related. My great grandfather named his children:

I am looking for a woman I knew in Karlshruhe Germany.Her name was Edith Giovanni(?)...she helped my father take care of me and my brother( Rita and Jimmy)and we loved her. She was short and had long black hair. Though she was a maid/nanny...I always had the impression that she may have come from a more wealthy family. She mostly wore kilt type skirts and always dressed so nice.She loved horses and had pictures of them on her wall. My great grand father was born in France or Corse November 15, 1827 his name was John Paul Picheloup. He came to the USA 1850 and continued to write to his family in france and send his mail by Joseph Lombard, French consulate. That is all the information I had. He tended the Jail and Commisary at Arkansas Post Arkansas until his death. His trade also was trapping, tanning and saddlery.

Les seules choses que je connais au sujet de mon père sont qu’il s’appelle Armand Prat; qu’il est né à Relizane en Algérie le 8 avril 1923; il est le fils de François Prat et de Joséphine Hatagnera et il a marié ma mère le 29 août 1945 à Moltifao en Corse. Je suis le seul fils né de cette union.

On m’a raconté diverses histoires contradictoires au sujet de son décès. Ma mère m’a dit que quelqu’un a dit à mon grand-père qu’il est mort à Lyon en 1947, mais qu’il a été enterré en Algérie. Je crois que mon père peut encore être vivant, et s’il ne l’est pas, j’aimerais tout de même trouver des parents qui pourraient me donner des renseignements à son sujet et au sujet de son côté de la famille.

I have had a hard time tracking down my ggGrandfather.

All I have found is that he was born and france and was married to Esther Scaife in Cleveland, Ohio - USA in 1885. They had several grandchildren and he died in Ohio in 1947.

I have no further information. If anyone can be of assistance I would grealy appreciate any information or advice you can give me.

I am looking for information on the Graziani and Francioni families. My great, great grandfather, Joseph Graziani was born in Marseilles in 1812 (according to the1850 U.S. Census for Assumption Parish, Louisiana). However, my grandfather always said that Joseph Graziani came from Ajaccio, Corsica. Marie Francioni was the wife of Joseph Graziani. Marie was born in Marseilles in 1827. It is my belief that she was the daughter of Antoine and Madeline Francioni. Antoine Francioni was born in Corsica about 1800 and Madeline (Francioni) was born in Marseilles about 1810. Antoine Francioni, Madeline (Francioni), Joseph Graziani, and Marie Francioni (Graziani) came to Louisiana before 1850.
