Hotel Opal, My Great Grandfather and the rest of the family

My mother Rochelle Opal married Norman Schwartz in New York, NY. My Mother was born from a marriage between David and Bella Opal. David Opal was the son of Isaac Opal and Bella Ashenfarb. Isaac had a brother which is believed to be Henry Opal. Henry supposedly either started, owned or operated the Hotel Opal In France before WWII and was assumed by our family to have been killed by the Nazis. The hotel was then in the hands of Isaac and the rest of the family - which of course many were sent to concentration camps, killed or forced to leave the area. I would like to know how folks find out about the lives of the people that have owned property in France, the records or how real property was transferred, how to determine whether there were burial plots for such individuals, vital records for potential marriage between Isaac and Bella and the way to determine the true surname of Opal . . . eventually leading to discovery of all the dozen or so siblings that were part of the Opal family and if any survived to produce offspring that are still in Europe (or came to US much later after WWII).

I know that my Grandfather David Opal came to the United States originally in 1920 (Declaration of Intention documented), before WWII, but according to some boat records might have went back to France after WWII, maybe to take care of family issues, and came back to the U.S. because there is a record of such name re-entering.

In this type of situation, whereas records might be difficult to obtain, is it worth an effort to contact directly the 8th District in France to ask about any Vital Records relating to the Opal family? Would they help?

I'm specifically interested in learning where Isaac actually came from or his Grandparents, if not from France. If the name Opal is a changed name from something like Opaletsky, then it could be Czechoslovakian. But here, like other records, my Grandfather, David Opal was born in Warsaw Poland. That MIGHT indicate that both Isaac and Bella at one point lived in Warsaw....to give birth to my Grandfather. That could mean the Opal family has roots in Warsaw, not really France.

Huard & Vannier

Looking for any information birth/baptism, or marriage certificates of Charles Joseph Huard, and his wife Eulalie Vannier. Charles was born 02/12/1856 , and his wife was born 12/12/1856. I believe they originated from Nice, France. They were both Catholic, and immigrated to Canada approx. 1894. They had three children born in France before they imigrated.Charles Joseph Huard, born 16/12/1883. Louis Eme Valerie Huard 03/12/1884 (my great grandfather), and Camille A.P. Huard 13/02/1888. They had two more children after they moved to Canada. Alphonse, and Eugene. I recently found Eugene's baptism record, and it finally had the correct last name of Charles wife Eulalie, took me a few years of waiting on that one. I was originally told by my grandmother that Eulalie's last name was gautier but turns out it's Vannier. If anyone could help locate these two in and around Nice, France. That would be greatly appreciated. I am not 100% certain they lived in Nice, but they could of lived somewhere nearby. -Regards Bradley

Claude Brunette death?

Im looking for the death of my ancestor Claude Brunette after 1793 probably in the Paris area. Also a second marriage for his son Jacques Joseph Brunette who married first in 1801 Julie Sirie and divorced her in 1802.

You should try looking at RECEL.

It is a site that let's you locate area records. Where it says "Commune ou code" start to type in the commune you are interested in. It will give you a dropdown box of possible matches. When you select your commune it will take you to the page for that department. Once you have selected it, Recel will also have a drop down box that says "Dans un Rayon 10 Km" or something like that. If you click on it, it will show you all the communes in a 10 km radius. From 1793-1903 the entire country of France made TABLES DECENNALES, which indexed their vital records for each commune by decade. You are looking for the records that say "Marie" or "Mariage" for marriage records. "Naissance" are births. I have seen them "Nouveau-ne" too which means "New Born". "Deces" are deaths. If you need more help maneuvering these, let me know. These are only indexes so if you find something you actually want to look at, let me know, I'll help you figure out how to access the actual record. You also might be able to figure that out for yourself if you remember that "N" meant that records are for births, "D" for deaths" and "M" for marriages. Was the area of Reynies included in your search? It is North of Toulouse, South of Montauban and Northwest of Puylaurens (approx 50 miles/80km). I found that was the family seat of Seguin--- so perhaps Pierre and Charlotte would have married there as it would be her family's area?

In your reading... did you happen to come across the surname SEGUIN?

I've been trying to just search generally and I have come across this being the root name for the variations of both SEGUINOT and SEGUENOT. The variations coming from the various dialects that crossed the region It seems, as of right now, the family itself originates from the Languedoc area... so perhaps the family could be in the area around Puylaurens?

I'm not sure about finding surname history for the region. I didn't read or speak French when I started doing genealogical research. I still really don't speak it but I can read it. You can use translate.google.com to help you. The I sent you site requires you to create a user name and password. I looked at the tables decennials (decade tables) for Puylaurens and didn't find a marriage record for Charlotte Seguinot but there seems to be a marriage record between a Pierre Affigne and Jeanne Carrie in the early part of 1800. It makes me wonder if he had a first wife that died and he remarried. It is possible. I just don't think he did it in Puylaurens.

Are you familiar with how to find a surname history for this region? I think an alternate spelling of Seguinot may be Seguenot (I have run across that spelling in Louisiana and Fr. Canadian reference--but I am not sure and usually the surname histories have variations of spelling listed with them)

I did not find Puy de Laurens but I did find Puylaurens in Langeudoc which is now part of Tarn. Here is the site to view civil registries. I hope you can read french:

From what I have been able to gather (not much admittedly) the Sequinot surname is coming from the west coast central region of France. I read it somewhere a grouping of family names that traveled from the coastal region of France into Mayaguez. I'd love to find a Surname history of some sort to try and narrow the field of ports and thereby narrow the geographic possiblities, but I am coming up a bit short on that front

The earliest DOB I have is for Francisco/Francois/Francis SEGUINOT b. 2 Apr 1865 In PR So I figure that his parents or grandparents may have been part of the wave of immigration after the Spanish opened up the Island for colonization in the early to mid 1800's.

There are a lot of French Records out there, easily accessible if you know where your French ancestors are from in France. It gets a bit harder when you don't have an actual locality but it can be done. What are their full names?

Hello,

I have stumbled upon a French surname or two in my digging. From what I have read I am figuring that the family of at least one, SEGUINOT, may have immigrated from Mainland France (as opposed to a holding in the West Indies or Corsica)in the first 2/3rd of the 19th Century. There is also the name Lacourt (Fr: Lacorte) but I don't know which French holdings the family may have moved from.

Are there any French records that I can access? They would have sailed into Mayaguez (western Puerto Rico). I have no idea where to look. Any help would be appreciated.

There would be many variations. The "Ch' sound can convert to "C" or to "S". You could try a Soundex coding.

Francoise Germaine Genoud is my great aunt. She was born in Grenoble, France in 1896 and died in Aubagne Bouche du Rhone on Jan. 30 1974. She was married to George E. Hamman from 1919-1932. She then married Joseph Louis Vesin in 1943 in Ammemasse, later divorced him in 1952. I am looking for a death certificate for her. She had much tragedy in her life.

Hi, I am trying to find more information about my French ancestors. My great, great grandfather, Theophile Semblat de Tenon was born on the 2nd of February, 1839 in Bordeaux, Gironde, Aquitaine, France. His parents were Guillaume (William) de Tenon, a Doctor of Medicine and Marie Semblat. On Theophile's marriage certificate his Father's name is written as Guyon, however this is more than likely a phonetic spelling of Guillaume.
