Frank Brandebourg

Looking for information on my Grandfather, Frank Brandebourg. He may have immigrated to the Unites States in the 1880 to 1910 period. He was French, and it is said that he had a twin brother. He also may have immigrated to avoid being arrested in France. At any rate, I can find absolutely no record of him, his family, or anything else that you would normally expect a person to leave behind. There is only one Brandebourg family left in the United States. Are there any in France now? Does anyone in France remember an ancester fitting the above description?

I don't know if he married in France or Switzerland. I am going by the US census record which states both parents were born in France. He was a teacher and her family were farmers.
----
Je recherche les familles de DUBUIS et de LUGRIN. Jean DUBUIS est né 17 janvier 1822.

Seeking info on any and all of the following persons:

JULES AUGUSTE COELOS, born 17 JUL 1883, Guillerval, Seine-et-Oise, France. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1889-1890, according to various sources, but have not been able to find him on any passenger lists.

Jules' mother:
(ANASTASIE) NATHALIE FILLOUSE (married names add COELOS & CABASSUD), born about 1863 in France, possibly St. Beriman, Dheune. Immigrated to the U.S. approx 1889-1890. It seems she uses both Coelos and Cabassud names intermittenly at various times after 1900.

Jules' father:
JULES VICTOR AUGE COELOS unknown birth date or location other than France. Death is assumed prior to the previous persons' immigration.

Nathalie's parents:
FRANCIS FILLOUSE
JULIE BARBESAN

Nathalie married a LOUIS ALEXIS CABASSUD (born 1856-1859 possibly in Clammd., Seine, France) on 04 DEC 1890 in Manhattan, NY. His parents are JEAN BAPTISTE CABASSUD and ANNETTE CELINE MANGIN. I think he died around 1900.

I think they had two children: ROGER ALFRED JEAN BAPTISTE CABASSUD born 04 FEB 1892 and LOUIS HENRI CABASSUD born 18 NOV 1893.

Thank you!

Degruy, De Gruy

Greetings,

I administer the Degruy@Rootsweb list. This list mainly focuses on American Louisiana & Le Pays de Illinois history; however, we are expanding to include our European ancestry. We've been thinking that perhaps if we submit a list of some of the families allied to our Degruys, we might find researchers "out there" who might be interested in sharing research on some of these names. So below you will find a list of some of our related names. We are limiting this to our European connections.

If anyone wants to respond, here are some options: you could join the Degruy@rootsweb.com list and submit your contributions and queries to the list. That would make sense if you have a lot of interconnections. If not, you could respond to me at the following address and I will then submit your email to the Degruy list and ask anyone relevant to your research to contact you. If you do this please use this email:

listadministratordegruyl@earthlink.net

This is an "experiment." We'll just have to take it step by step and see how it goes.

Thanks for any participation.
R H

Here are some of our European ancestry names:

Aufrere Baussancourt Chantereine Conte/Le Conte/ Le Comte Dagobert D’Aulnay Grizon Gruy Verloin/ Verloing Hastier Mesnil Pamplume Perry/ Le Perrin Roy Saint-Simon Villeneuve

PS: Our progenitor also had the names Dumenil/ DuMesnil, Valentin, Fouchard, de la Folie [some of these may have been European family names or titles, so I don't know if there's any point in including these at this point. In the beginning Antoine Jean-Baptiste Valéntin Du Mésnil Fouchart Verloin spelled his "last name" as Degruysverloin [all one word with an umlaut on the y.] Eventually that became Verloin DeGruy.

One of our goals is to determine if the family ultimately originated in the Gruyeres, Switzerland area.

Tullues, d'Tullués

Hi all,

I have been trying to track down the origins / ancestry of the Tullues surname, and having very little luck. From what I am told, the "Tullues" surname is of French origin, having been spelled originally as "d'Tullués". Any google searches for similar names have come up naught.

Apparently the family moved from France to South Africa about four generations ago, and changed the name as it was too difficult to pronounce. Any further info I do not have.

The existing Tullues family is extremely small, so there is almost no information that I can find anywhere. I am hoping anyone from France may know about the name, or may be able to point me into a direction I can follow.

Thank you in advance,

-G

I have a birth certificate of the "French time" in the "Rhineland"/Germany again. In this time were written the birth certificates, death certificates and first names in the Rhineland in French language. The "French revolution calendar" was used as a date. Can somebody for me read this birth date from the document? The certificate is from "Barrenstein"; today a suburb of the city "Grevenbroich" close to Düsseldorf and Cologne. The birth person is Christian Wolf.
Many thanks in advance!
Konni

Charles Dorville

Trying to find family of great-grandfather Charles Dorville born about 1851 in France. His death certificate in 1878 in New Orleans, Louisiana states he was a native of Paris, France. I know Paris is a big place with many sections, but this is all I have. I can only hope that his widow Marie furnished this information and the coroner did not guess at the city. I believe his widow was Marie Josephine Neyroud or Chambour and that she was from Lyon, France. She and their son, who was born in America, decided to remain there, even though her family supposedly sent money for her to return to France. She died in 1910 in the state of Mississippi. Her family is also a mystery.
Any help will be appreciated.
Joseph Caudwell in Boulogne, France

Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have recently found an ancestor of mine called Joseph Caudwell. He was born in 1809 in Oxford, England, but due to a case of perjury for which he was found guilty, he was transported for 7 years (country as yet unknown). However, I have recently come across a letter of petition he wrote to the UK government pleading that he was innocent of the charges. His letter was written from Boulogne, France where he said he had been exiled for many years. According to a notice in the London Gazette he died on 13th October 1893 in Boulogne. My question is how I can find out more about his life whilst living in this area of France and where I might go to online to find any further information -newspaper records etc etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks. Nicky

My maternal Grandmother, Lillian CRAGGS, (Sri Lanka, 1882 - 1963), told my Mother of how her Father had fled from his Father in Mahe, India, via Sthn India & then onto Sri Lanka. The story is that his French government (governor?) father wanted him to become a priest and he didn't & so he fled. He grew coffee (no wonder my Grandmother loved coffee instead of the Ceylon tea!), and married Harriet MILLS in Sri Lanka, but nothing else is known, other than he changed his name to Francis (real name?) CASIMIR NAZARETH - apparently a popular name in the area.
The names we have are DELARQUE/DELARCHE/DELASQUE.
Interestingly, an Alexandre DELARCHE & a Dame DELARCHE & son, are mentioned in the lists @ www.ifrance.com/pondichery/index.html.
Despite this info, I am 'stumped' so am open to suggestions /info.
There is an urgency as I am searching on behalf of my very elderly Uncle George who had this mystery given to him when he was a young man but tried in vain to solve it!!
Here's hoping ....

Joubert - FRA, ZAF, CAN

I was born in SA in 1933; left RSA when I was 21 to hitchhike through Europe for a year; then decided to extend my stay for another couple of years while I travelled through Canada and the USA. HOWEVER, I met my lovely wife on the Canadian prairies in Alberta and married, raised a family, and settled down to become a Canadian citizen.

Worked in Banks for many years; then in 1967, (Canada's Centenial Year) did a "Centenial" project of "returning to School". Attended the Univ. of Calgary, Alberta; eventually received my Masters in Clinical Psychology; became a registered Psychologist. Worked in Banff and Lake Louise as their Community Psychologist. Semi-retired with Fern to Vancouver Island where I worked again as a Psychologist - mainly with suicidal Teenagers. Did this for 16 years and finally retired at age 65 south of Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island off the coast of Canada in the Pacific.

I have been researching the Joubert name for the past 40 years and have done some ground breaking research in our ancestor, Pierre Joubert (Jaubert) in the village of La Motte d'Aigues on the Luberon Mountains of Provence, Southern France.

On a map, it is located in Southern France - south of Avignon; north of Aix-en-Provence; off to the right a little, in the "V" of the Durrance river - south of Apt and north of Pertuis.

I managed to trace his parents and grandparents and have their marriage contracts and wills. Very colourful documents.

I hope to establish a web page for the Joubert-Jaubert family during this next year. They were all Protestant french people (Huguenots)

How far have you traced your Joubert family back so far. All families in RSA were from a single ancestor, Pierre Jaubert who escaped France in 1688 on the boat, the "Berg China" on which he arrived with his new bride, Isabeau (Elizabeth) Richarde.

Where do you live in America ?

Kenneth Joubert in Canada.

Looking for some desperately needed help in locating the birth and parent's of my great-grandfather William Cavin who was born in Lille en Flandre, France around 1856. He married Elsy Proctor and I have found a census for them and three of their children from England in 1881. But I have been unable to find any birth information for him. I have even tried to look him up using the french spelling of William but no luck. I wonder if I am spelling the last name wrong.

Any help or guidance would be GREATLY appreciated!

Melissa Patterson

I need help with this name Deaumanette. My ggg grandmother came to the USA from France in 1850. Her name was Leonie Louiza Deaumanette. Her father was Louis Charlemagne Deaumanette and her mother was Clara Patri. Sometimes the name is spelled Dumont or Demont or even Dumonet. I think Dumonet is the correct one. What sort of name is this? Is it common around France? Do the Dumonet, Demont, Patri, etc live in a certain area? The story is that they came from Paris, but that could be because no one in rural Tennessee knew of any other area. Her children had the names Louvania and Ardenia. Please help us at least know the meaning and background of those names.

Thank you, Merci, Amber

HELP NEEDED IN GHESQUIER FAMILY GENEOLOGY SEARCH

Their are only 4 known living members of the Ghesquier family in the United States.

Does anybody know of a Huguenot church near La Valette, Normandy in the late 1600's or around 1700? First question is which La Valette? (It just means Little Valley.) It is possible that it is the few houses called La Valette near Surville, Manche, Normandy but could be any La Valette.
In the Quakers Church minutes, the burial of Charles Francis TIMMONS, M.D. on 22-Jul-1754 lists his birthplace as La Valette, Normandy, France. I assume his French name would have been Timon. He is buried at the French Huguenot flax drying glenn near Edenderry, Ireland just down the Largan river from the French Huguenot linen weaving center at Lurgan.

Ray

Henry Ricketts / Lucy Featherstone -married in France?

Having been researching that origins of a particular ancestor for some months, it has finally come to light that he was probably born in France. He certainly never admitted to it though!

The information has come from the 1851 census (previously undiscovered due to a transcription error) and goes like this:

Henry Ricketts, born abt 1816 Glocs
Lucy Ricketts, born Featherstone, abt 1825, Newington, Surrey
Louis Ricketts, born abt 1846, France
[Harry] Thomas Ricketts, born abt 1848, France
Edgar [Alexander] Ricketts, born 1849, Kentish Town

Prior to reading this I had no idea why they might have been in France but it does make sense now. A man who is probably Henry appears on the 1841 census as a journeyman ironmonger, and he is a railway porter on the 1851 census. He was back in England in December 1849 though as he registered Edgar's birth in St Pancras.

There is no record of Henry and Lucy marrying in England as far as I can see - where would I look for records of a French marriage? I had always assumed that they never did marry, but I suppose I should at least investigate this new possibility.

If anyone has any information, it would be enormously helpful, but in any case this thread has given me food for thought; pretty good food at that.

Cheers,
Henry

Hi! I'm trying to help a friend with her family name, URSIN. She believes that it originated in France. Is there anyone out there who knows whether or not it is, indeed, a French surname, possibly where it originated from and is there a meaning behind the name?

I realize that this is a broad request, but if anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it!

Thank you.

Donna

Anyone in france with these ancestors? Dominique D'Olive was born Tallac in 1739 to Jean Dolive and Marid Savabos Dolive. He immigrated to usa and married Mary Louise Baudin daughter of Francoise Baudin and granddaughter of Nicholas Baudin (Baudoin?) and Francoise Palley who were french immigrants. Nicholas was a capt. in Bienville's army. Dominique Dolive's eldest son, Louis married Mary Louise LaFleau, daughter of Nathiaz LaFleau. These people were prominent in the history of Baldwin and Mobile counties in Alabama. I would like information on these links to france.

My great great grandfather, Oliver Joseph Cogean, emmigrated from France in 1882 when he was about 23-28, possibly through Ireland into NY or Boston and ended up in Missouri where he married Martha Ellen Bradshaw. I have not been able to find any other info about him or his family in France, so I'm not sure what part he was from. I know he had brothers, not sure about sisters. He was well educated, his family had property, apparently well off. He never served the mandatory military service because of leaving the country. I'm not sure how or where to access French records or if there's any available to check. If anyone has any info or ideas of where to look, I'd greatly appreciate any help.
Lael

Can find no information in the British Virgin Islands about two brothers, mariners (perhaps on the Rhone), ship-wrecked in the waters of the BVI in the early 1800's. They remained there, on the island of Anegada and married; descendants: John Bedford, Henry, William and James. It is said that the Creque family are descended from one of the Huguenot generals, a Count who fought to protect their side after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the St Bartholemews Day Massacre. His personal secretary was named Marcou or Markoe. Anybody have information about this?
Explanation from the "French revolution calendar"

I have a birth certificate of probably 1813. To this time were written the birth certificates, death certificates and first names in the "Rhineland"/Germany in French language. The "French revolution calendar" was used as a date. Can somebody for me read this birth date from the document? The certificate is from Oedekoven close to Bonn/Germany. The birth person is Marguerithe (Margaretha) Fassbender; daughter of Jean (Johann) Fassbender and Marguerithe (Margaretha) Langen.

Many thanks in advance!

Where to find Gratacap, Massina

My G-G-G-Grandfather (abt 1793-1850) was French, but lived and died in England. His marriage certificate gives his name as "Jean Charles Dominique Antoine Gratacap otherwise Massina," which I presume in French would be "Gratacap dit Massina". There is no record indicating where in France he came from, and none of the on-line tools associating surnames with particular departments go back to this period. In the more modern period, no department has both Gratacaps and Massinas until very recently.

Is anyone familiar with a department that has a family using both names or where both names exist?

Naturalization record for Jacob Ben Abraham

I would like to know if it is possible to obtain a French naturalization record for Jacob Ben Abraham (AKA Alex J. Benn) b. ABT 1859-1862 - unknown birthplace. He is listed as being a naturalized French citizen in some records as well as being of Spanish descent in another record. Jacob was also married to Serena Tedeschi, an Italian, before the French consulate in Smyrna, Turkey around 1886. Jacob later moved to Egypt by 1889, to London by 1901, and South Africa in 1915. Any suggestions of where to search or who to contact would be greatly appreciated. We are anxious to track down our family roots.

Dear Leslie,

I am the Carobel who has posted on Ancestry. I believe that you have the information that we need to help us document the Cicaty line. There are several of us who have been researching this line for years. My husband is descended from Augustin Beraud de Cicaty and his distant cousin from NC has found a letter sent to Benjamin Franklin from Augustin's father which asks him to forward it to his son. I have other info such as marriage certificates, etc. on the line and will be happy to share anything that I have and put you in touch with others who are working on this. Mary Meyer and I corresponded for several years, but I lost touch with her and put my research on hold due to elderly relatives' needs and my job. I will be more than happy to reimburse you for any info that you have. You can reach me at

cwbelcher@comcast.net
Carol Belcher

TOURNAT (Bordeaux) HORNE (Paris)

My grandfather's name was Raymond Rene Tournat, born June 13, 1888 in Bordeaux; believe his father's name was Alexis Tournat. But I can find neither. Alexis Tournat married a woman from Paris. We have a lot of names, but can't tie any of them together. Her name might have been Marcelle(a?), Clemence, Carolyn, Eugenie, Horne? Alexis Tournat died about 1890-91 and the mystery mother took her two young sons (the other one was George Rene Tournat) to London to live and remarried and the name Englehart (sp?) might be involved there. I am fresh out of ideas and would sure love some suggestions. Thank you very much.

Mystery of a Miss Lucie-Marie-Louise Dolphyn and Tinsley Waterhouse

Hi - I was hoping that any fellow researchers out there and/or anyone who may hold the key to this mystery may be able to help me find any information on a Miss Lucy or Lucie Marie Louise Dolphyn from France and a Tinsley Waterhouse (a retired Engineer) who moved to France (I suspect it would have been prior to the 1939 and in a time when an Englishman might have made some impression on the life of the region) and lived at villa “Les Torrents” at Saint Raphael, Valescure, His death notification states it occurred 23/2/44, at 00.10h. The notification was made by a Josephine Girande, 36 yrs old, who is described as a housekeeper – her address is somewhere else in St Raphael, not Valescure where he was living. In Tinsley’s will it mentions a Miss Lucy or Lucie Marie Louise Dolphyn who must have been a very close friend of Tinsley’s as he left a large portion of his possessions to her. Also mentioned in his will is an association with the agency WFKing in Valescure. Tinsley is my Great Grandfather and very little is known of his time in France so any information that any one may have on him or Miss Lucy or Lucie Marie Louise Dolphyn would be ever so gratefully received. Looking forward to any reply no matter how small or large. Kind Regards Tanya

My gggrandfather George Waters ran a booking agency for the LMS Railway on Rue Brochant in Paris in late 1800's, followed by his son Horace Henry Herbert. I am aware George had other children who moved from UK to France, as well as others born as French citizens. George's wife Adelaide died in Paris approx 1899. HHH Waters married M C Taureau and had at least one child born in Paris (Horace Edmond Waters, 1900).

I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of the rest of the Waters children of George and HHH. We only know about the ones that returned to the 'mother country'.
