In searching for my grandfather, Harry Belmont, I came across naturalization applications and passports of a Harry Belmont with the same birthdate as my grandfather indicating he was born in Pau, France in 1868. His parents were Coleman/Colman Belmont (born in France) and Ventienna Calderon (born in Spain). Harry married my grandmother in Vienna, Austria and was fluent in five languages. His first son was named Harry Emile Belmont was born in Austria. The passports indicate that Harry worked for the Austrian Embassy somewhere between 1892-1910 and that he had also traveled to France and Russia. I would like to find birth, baptism, marriage records to confirm that this Harry is my grandfather, but am not sure where to write or, indeed, how to begin researching in France.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
Jane Belmont
jbelmont@aol.com

Luby Sisters from Clerihan early teachers in Clonmel

On 2 Jun 2004 catemcn_1 wrote:
Researching the Guidera/y family. John Guidera/y married a Margaret Luby and their children born c.1814-1835 all baptised in Ardfinnan Church, Ardfinnan (have details), they probably lived at Morkhamstown, Tipp. Pls advise if you find anything of common interest? There is a Thomas Clarke Luby written up in "Modern Ireland 1600 - 1972", p.392, and another book on Tipperary said there were 2 Luby sisters from Clerihan who were early teachers when the Clonmel sisters began their school. Hope that helps?
========================================================

Here is some additional information on the Two sisters:

Actually there were 3 sisters. Their parents were:

John Luby and Margaret Quirk.

This family donated land and money for the creation of the Ursuline Convent at Thurles, in County Tipperary. All three daughters became nuns at this Convent as follows:

Joanna Luby b. circa 1773 at age 21 entered the convent on 17 Jun 1794. Her NEW name was Sister Augustine.

Mary Luby b. c1775 at age 19 entered the convent on 17 Jun 1794. Her new name was Sister Angela.

Anne Luby b. aft 1775 (youngest of the 3 sisters) entered the convent in 1802. Her new name was Sister deSales.

Their was also a brother, Rev. Thomas Luby, Parish Priest of Clerihan who helped his sisters financially and otherwise until his death in June 1819.

The Ursuline Convent at Thurles was founded in 1787 by Sister Claire Ursula Tobin. 11 years after she founded the convent she founded the school "Scoil Angela Ursuline Primary School" in 1799. This school is still around! Check it out at http://www.thurles.ie/primary_school_education/316/#ScoilAng....

The only other info I can find on these Luby sisters is that Sister Mary Angela Luby resigned from the convent in 1815 (source for this is The National Archives of Ireland
http://www.nationalarchives.ie; Women's History Resources;
Record 11925 from 'Directory of Sources for Women's History in Ireland' Form no: 12025.) In addition there is one other mention of a MOTHER M. Angela Luby w/ the dates 1816-1825 in the National Archives of Ireland.

My own direct line is through a Brigit Luby b. c1810 in Ireland who married a Thomas SHANAHAN b. c1810 in Ireland and had the following children:
Denis Shanahan b. 1830 Co. Limerick,
Michael William Shanahan b. 1841 Co. Limerick and Margaret "Maggie" Ann Shanahan b. ? Co. Limerick.

But I've never been able to find any record of this Brigit LUBY or her husband Thomas SHANAHAN in Ireland.

I'd love to correspond with anyone who has ANY more data on the children of John Luby and Margaret Quirk. Are there ANY descendants? With son being a priest and 3 of their girls being nuns - if they didn't have any additional children then this line of Luby's must have died out????

My G Grandfather Joseph DeClauzel who was born approx 1850 in Auch (by his marriage certificate) settled in Australia & raised his family. The only information that has been saved over the years was that his family back in France were chocolate makers in Toulouse. We have no record of any siblings. He states that his parents were John Declauzel & Maria Desbarats. Can any one help me in trying to locate any information on any of the family. Thanks Sara-Gay

I know that this is an incorrect spelling of a French name.

Would anyone have any idea of the correct spelling for the surname of MESPLEBE ?

This is the American spelling and with many people not knowing foreign language I am desperately looking for the French spelling.

The US information says this person was from Toulotou and I believe that she is from Toulouse.

The person is a Victory Mesplebe ? and was born in about 1895 and came to the US in about 1919. It is believed she was married in France to a Ralph Berger about 1918.

Any and all help and information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Kathleen Huber (Aubert) Bruce (Brousse)

He was born April 4 1853, but I am not sure about the name of the town or city. His father's name was Pierre and his mother's Bertrande. If anyone knows where I could get more information or is related to this Daspet family in France, please, let me know.

Apparently, we are linked to the village of Giroussens between Albi and Toulouse, in the Tarn. Does anyone know where I could find out more about this connection, or Giroussens (the river or the village), or my family name? My French is weak, so it is better for me to communicate in English, but I am willing to try French if people will be understanding.

All have the last name of Raymond. Either Pierre or Jean, was later called William(or the french Guilliam), William and his brother Michel (Joachim) moved to India.

Breil/h
These are the names I know.
Paule, Thérèse, Jeanne(ton)-married into Raymond family, and a possible François, on the baptism for one of the Raymond children he was present, but the last name is spelt Brel.

Perés
Toinette and Jean Baptise - I think Toinette is the mother to the Breil/h's and Jean is their Uncle.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Liz

Belcastel - 1600+ - Huguenot

The English/Scottish family name Bonnycastle evolved from the French family name Belcastel.
The Belcastels lived in and around Belcastel on the Aveyron in Midi-Pyrenees from about 1200 to 1600. In 1597, the local seigneur, Jean de Belcastel, a Huguenot, sold his lands and moved elsewhere - we believe to Scotland/England, although some of the family stayed in France.
Does anyone know what happened to the family in France and whether it did in fact immigrate first to Scotland and then to England, where we can pick up the Bonnycastle family in 1670?

John

Jean Mirande, from a Calmont , Languedoc

In 's-Hertogenbosch, NL (French Bois-le-Duc) I traced one of my ancestors to a Johannes (Jean) Mirande, first record 1697, who cam from 'Calmont', and the Languedoc. I found to towns by that name, but the one in the Haute Garonne is more appealing to me than the one in the Aveyron, one of the reasons being it proclaiming itself to be a centre fot the Huguenot reformation. (I liked the town better too).
I posted a similar question on the Languedoc board, (I followed the historic naming, not the present day boundaries) and discovered my knowledge of the French language to be severely lacking. That's why it appears in English here. (And I visited while on vacation the bastide of Mirande in the Gers).
Anyone who can link this person to either of these places, maybe someone who knows even more?

Maruejouls and Bernussou Families of France

I am hoping that this new year will bring me some luck in my search for the Maruejouls and Bernussou families of Aubin and Decazeville, Aveyron, France.

My Great Grandparents, Joseph Maruejouls, born about 1867 in Aubin, and Celine Marie Bernussou, born September 23, 1857, lived in Decazeville before immigrating to California in 1907. Transcript records for the ship, SS La Savoie, indicate that Joseph left from the port of Havre, France on March 2,1907 and arrived at the Port of New York in March 10, 1907. He wastraveling with his brother-in-law, Alfred Bernussou and their final destination was to a Maruejouls nephew's home in Ukiah, California. This ship transcript does not show Celine or her son Albert as being on board, however census records for San Francisco, CA indicate that they also immigrated in 1907.

I would love to hear from anyone connected to this family.

Happy New Year!
Jeannette Caldwell
I am interested in information on my grandfather. I believe his name was Leopold Francois Pierre Ducasse (?). Born 1883. He came to the U.S. from France in 1896 (U.S. Census record). Lived in Texas under the name Frank P. Simmon. Died 1957. Had cousins (in New Orleans in U.S.?) sur-named Claverie and Maumus. He may have been from Tarbes. I have 4 photographs of him as a young boy and what may have been family (father, mother, two sisters?), stamped with "Delie Photographe, Tarbes." His father was named Pierre Ducasse (?) and may have been a teacher or professor. Mother was Marie Sidonie or perhaps Marie Sidonie Labat. I am interested in establishing the place of his birth and whether I have any relatives in France.

I am looking for a record of Julien Augustine FONTALBAT, born Feb. 27, 2869 in Previnquieres, France, the son of Pierre(b.1824)and Rose Thomas Fontalbat(b.1839). He came to the United States and settled in West Virginia. He had several brothers and sisters still in France when he left-Seraphin(b.1852), Marie Jeanne(b.1854), Jean Baptiste Marcellin(b.1857), Marie(b.1859), Antoine Philippe(b.1862), and Victor Lucien(b.1865), all born in Previnquieres. It is possible that Antoine Philippe also came to the US with Julien. I would like to find any descendants of the Fontalbat family also. If anyone can give me some clues on where to search, it would be a great help.
Sincerely,
Lisa Collins

Bonjour,

Je recherche pour information concernant Jean Delpech dit Parisot, ne a l'eveche de Rodez en 1648.

His parents were Jean Delpech and Marguerite Delnat (Delnau). We believe that they lived in the village of Parisot, Tarn-et-Garonne, but we could not find appropriate records in the archives in Montauban or Rodez, and there are no records in the village of Parisot. Jean Delpech dit Parisot was a soldier who came to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with the Carignan-Salieres regiment in 1665, where his name was listed as "Delpesches". He stayed in Quebec and his descendants number many thousand in the United States and Canada. The body reached New York from Bourdeaux, France last night and will arrive in Syracuse to-day.
Few men have had a career so diversified as that of Mr. Bloom, who was probably one of the best known travelling salesman in America. He was on the "road" for a period lacking less than two months of thrity-four years, and in that time crossed the Atlantic many times and visited nearly every civilized country in the world.

I am in search of information conatining this family name. I have some info dating back into the early 1700's. I believe that my branch of the family was that which travelled to the West Indies during the time of the Revocation. The name had been changed by some members of the family to read "Garrigus" because some wanted to fight in the revolutionary war and some, due to their Quaker heritage, did not agree. The family split and a number of them travelled to America via the West Indies. This is the branch that I am in search of.
