Y is a commune in the Somme department in Picardie in northern France. Y bears the shortest place name in France, and one of the shortest in the world. The inhabitants call themselves Ypsiloniens

Y is situated 32 miles (50 km) east of Amiens, at the junction of the D15 and D615 roads, in the far eastern side of Picardie in northern France.

French Picardie, région of France encompassing the northern départements of Oise, Somme, and Aisne. Picardy is bounded by the régions of Nord-Pas-de-Calais to the north, Champagne-Ardenne to the east, Île-de-France to the south, and Haute-Normandie to the west. Small stretches of the border adjoin the English Channel to the west and Belgium to the northeast.

ecause Picardy was never unified in the feudal period, its boundaries are disputable. Linguistically, Picardy extended beyond its geographic boundaries to Artois, Cambrésis, Tournésis, and parts of Flanders and Hainaut; ecclesiastically, it embraced not only the medieval dioceses of Amiens, Noyon, and Laon but also the northern parts of those of Beauvais and of Soissons. The province of Picardy from the 16th century to the end of the ancien régime in 1789 comprised the Somme River basin from Saint-Quentin to the English Channel, the basins of the Serre and of the upper Oise, and Montreuil on the Canche beyond the Authie.

Occupied by the Salian Franks in the 5th century, Picardy was divided in the feudal period and encompassed six countships: Boulogne, Montreuil, Ponthieu, Amiénois, Vermandois, and Laonnois. King Philip II Augustus gradually united Amiénois and Vermandois to his domain (from 1185), but Ponthieu was held by the English as a fief almost continuously from 1279 to 1360 and then as an outright possession until 1369. The dukes of Burgundy acquired Ponthieu, the Somme towns, and Montdidier under the Treaty of Arras in 1435. Reconquered for France by Louis XI in 1477, Picardy was thereafter a frontier area invaded frequently from the Habsburg Netherlands until the French acquisition of Artois and southern Hainaut in 1659.

Some of the bloodiest fighting in World War I occurred in Picardy, reflected in the melancholy English popular song “"Roses of Picardy"” (1916) and also in the large number of cemeteries that mark former battlefields in the Somme valley. Picardy was also the scene of bitter fighting in World War II—in May 1940 and August and September 1944.

I've been trying to clear up the eternal confusion over the "Y" phenomenon whenever I find it. Please forgive me if I've addressed it previously, but I don't see myself on this thread yet, so here we go:

Your ancestors probably NEVER set foot in "Y, Somme, Picardie, France", or even heard of it. It's misinformation caused by people carelessly accepting a drop-down hint as to place of death offered by the ancestry software. It's NOT a software problem, it's entirely human error that keeps getting perpetuated.

Here is a link to a site I put together a few years ago that tries to explains how this confusion began and why it keeps popping up. Happy hunting!

http://ysommepicardiefrance.blogspot.com/

ooo lala! Sweet success. I was enamored with the slovak online church records of the Presov region, when I found my maternal grandfather's birth record and then went back further into the 18th century registers and then figured the format was the same whether slovak, hungarian or latin... but the French "Naissance" narratives and ledgers are soooo beautiful!... or at least the ones in Angy! Still not finding any online in the H Pyrenees, but many wonderful town mtg docs and maps... but I'm a bit bleary-eyed at the moment, so the search will have to wait a bit...
Many more thanks for all the great source info and links that you have provided... I will have a busy weekend :) Bon nuit! ... or bon jour! (are you in France?)

Salut -- Bonjour

« Tables décennales » are the 10-Year Indices which began in 1793. The ten-year ranges for each index (« table ») begins in a year that begins with a 3 and ends with a 2 : i.e. 1793-1802, 1803-1812, 1813-1822, and so on through the decades.

After you find the record in a « table décennale », you may quickly and simply go vital record you are seeking. The word for "vital records" in French is « état civil », however, in genealogy and historical record sites, it usually means "vital records since 1793". Vital records BEFORE 1793 are in church parish registers, called « registres paroissiaux ». most of the time, there is no index, although a few parish priests in a few cities made indices.

Large cities often have separate indices for births, marriages/divorces, and deaths. Some medium size towns combine births with marriages & divorces, and put deaths in a separate index. For small towns - which is most places - all of the vital records (« état civil ») are combined in annual registers.

Here is the link to the homepage of the Departmental Archives of Hautes-Pyrénées (dept. no. 65):

http://www.archivesenligne65.fr/

Digital images for all of the towns in Hautes-Pyrénées are not online yet, but many are there and more are being added one-by-one over time.

Here are some useful instructions on how to use the website for your research. (It is a bit more complicated than all of the other sites.) The instructions are in French from the website of GeneaNet. (You can use Google Translate to translate the page if you need to do so.) Here is the link:

http://blog.geneanet.org/index.php/post/2011/11/Les-archives...

Here is the link to Google Translate :

http://translate.google.com/

(Of course, it will not translate words inside of images; only words as text.)

And finally, here is the link to your town of Bizous at English Wikipédia :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizous

Bonne quête !
Salut! et Merci, merci, merci beaucoup!!!!

I was a bit thrown at first by the french, but was able to follow the format... it's wonderful! I have definitely found Albert, and a possible for his father, altho I'm not sure if I'm just in the indices and maybe there's more... but off to a great start... thank you again for your suggestions...

I also tried wiki info for the town of Bizous (which is the 'Duthu' family line), but was not successful at using your format for a link to the Hautes Pyrenees archives, so perhaps they are not on line at this point. Any other suggestions?

with appreciation, dorothy

Salut -- Hello

Angy is in the département of Oise in the Picardie region. (It is located halfway between Chantilly and Beauvais, about 60 km north of Paris.) And, Gennevilliers is in the départment of Haute-de-Seine in the Île-de-France region (by Nanterre, very near Paris).

A fast and very reliable way to find the names of the départements and regions of cities your are researching is Wikipedia. It includes all of the 35,600+ cities in France and brief descriptions about them, with an Information Box that has basic information about each place. (The French Wikipédia version usually has much more information than the English site. (Simply click on the direct links to the French or English website in the column on the left side of the page.)

Here is the link to Angy at Wikipédia.fr :

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angy

All of the birth, marriage, and death records from earliest times to about 1903 for Oise have been digitized, and are searchable online for free.
I need some guidance. I am trying to find info for my mother-in-law. Her Maternal line, "Leclere"'s (Albert and his father, Amedee) were from the area of Angy. Is that in Picardie region? They also lived in Gennevilliers for a time, which seems to be a suburb of Paris. I am pretty good at searching church records, but am stymied by not knowing the correct regions. Can anyone help me out?

FINEL 1700 1748 Massachusetts, E - U

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my research efforts regarding one EDWARD FINEL I wish to communicate with anyone researching the surname of FINEL that might have someone, or know of someone, who would have been in the Massachusetts U.S.A. area in the time period of 1700 to 1748. This man EDWARD FINEL 1, we believe had ancestry from France and was probably Christen Baptized named EDWARD, or his father was at this time. Because this man birthed a son named EDWARD FINEL; born 27 October 1748 in Massachusetts and because of the naming patterns in the U.S.A. at that time period he could have been named for his father, or his grandfather.

It is not known at this time in my researching if the first FINEL immigrated to the U.S.A., or if he might have been part of a military unit stationed in or near Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. I have been unable to determine any information relative to this man; birth, country of origin, death, or whatever.

The lady we believe to be the mother of his child could have also been a friend or relative of the real mother. Although, there are indicator’s that this lady was his mother in some of my findings.

Thank you

At some stage someone tried to answer yes to death and the computer picked up the place name Y Somme and people copied thinking that this was correct. I am deleting slowly Y Somme as place of death on as many of my ancestors as possible. Hope this is of help to you.

Thank you for the information. So far I haven't been able to find anything similar on the ancestry.com site, but others may well succeed where I haven't. Meanwhile, I'm still deleting "Y, Somme" Picardie, France" manually whenever I find it, unless of course I can find some corroborating evidence (other than undocumented info on family trees), and so far I've never found any. Has anyone?

But I do hope to find that I truly AM related to someone who actually died in "Y", or better yet, to someone who was born there! I know it's a tiny place, but I have a big tree with many ancestors in France, so qui sait?

I'm sure everyone posting on this thread is well aware that there is such a place as "Y"; we all know where it is and what its history is, but thank you for sharing. That's really not the point at all, nor is it the point that there really IS such a place as "Europe, Fayette, Georgia" or a "Rome, New York", etc. The point is that accepting information generated by careless acceptance of drop-down suggestions from a computer have led to ridiculous "data" on family trees.

I assure you we all take this seriously.

I'm quite late finding your message but I feel I have to add to it. There really is a place Y, Somme, Picardie France. It is the shortest name in France and one of the shortest in the world accodring to Wikipedia. It is in the north of France.
Yes you do have to be careful about what you type in and what you read other people have typed in. I hate it when someone is older than their parents or died before they were born. That is the quality of the person really doing genealogical work and the amature just playing and messing it up for the rest of us. Proving your sources is the most important thing you can do. Please take this seriously.

The answer lies way up in all these threads. It's a download error. None of your relatives lived or died in France. Someone who shared this portion of your tree has a program that asks: "Deceased?". They have answered "Y" for Yes. When that tree was downloaded to ancestry.com, the only "Y" they had was this town in France.
Your ancestors were not transported to France and died over many years by some plague. They are merely a victim of an old software program. Hope this helps you to find their real demise.

I know we all use different software; following directions are for PAF, but you should find something similar in your software.
On individual screen, click "Search" at top, then choose "advanced focus/filter". Select "all" [persons]. Under Field filter, click Define. Select "any place" from list of possibilities, move that to right [or open] area. Choose the "contains" option from drop-down menu. Type Y Somme Picardie France in box. Click Retrieve. If you have the option of "show results only", use it. Hopefully you don't have too many entries. Probably best to eliminate unwanted Y Somme Picardie France one by one.
My instructions aren't the best, and I'm not familiar with other software, but hopefully you can find something similar & accomplish the goal of getting rid of unwanted data.
Good luck!!

Hi Cathey,
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way of searching all locations. I have nursed the same fantasy. It should probably be on the list for future software upgrades. Another one on the wish-list would be an easy way of identifying and linking up ancestors from different branches of the tree who intermarry, thereby avoiding having repetition of names in the list. There are a few dodgy aspects of the software, but so far it has been an amazing resource to use, and we all learn from our mistakes.
Jill

Honestly I just stumbled upon it when that drop-down list of suggestions rang a bell: "Europe, Fayette, Georgia" was my "Aha!" moment.

Re: the tedious task of purging our imperfect trees of these mistakes, don't you wish they had a simple way of searching through a "List of All Locations", as there is a "List of All People", on our trees?

Or maybe there IS one and I just haven't looked hard enough. I'm afraid I'm one of those idiots who doesn't bother to read directions when something appears to be user-friendly, which is lazy and very bad form, especially for a genealogist!

Happy hunting, jillgrw and all.

Dear Cathey Thomas, let me add my name to the grateful multitude thanking you for solving that mystery. I have spent the past couple of days combing through all of my family trees, deleting references to Y Somme Picardie, and also to any ancestors from the Orkney Isles who managed to die in Chicago in the 11th century, or any similar historical impossibility. I've also been going through the middle ages deleting people who born after their parents died, or in some cases before their parents were born!!! PLEASE, PEOPLE, don't just download stuff willy-nilly. Do a bit of proof-reading once in a while!!!
jillgrw

Then, other people began pointing out just what you did and I eventually realized what was likely happening.

Don't worry about eliminating the examples of yhe glitch that you have in your tree - when you run into them, erase them. I revisit people in my tree for a lot of reasons and if I see Y Somme Picardie it's gone.

It has been obvious that something was wrong with the many deaths in this little village. People born in the early, early history did not travel from all over the world to this place to died - they could not have yet the death locale continued to surface. I am happy to remove all of the listings in my records though I am not sure this is even remotely possible at this late date.
Thank you for a logical answer to what happened.......Judy I

Bonjour !

1) Jean Alphonse LONGUET
né 01 fév 1884 - Marle (02) -> p.55 en ligne
x 02 sep 1909 - Signy l'Abbaye (08) : Ernestine Léonie GOBRON

2) Marie Eugénie LONGUET
née 15 sept 1885 - Marle (02)
dcd 21 sept 1886 - Marle (02)

3) Louis Isidore LONGUET
né  20 oct 1888 - Marle (02) -> p. 355 en ligne
x1 25 oct 1913 - Paris 15e : Marcelle Georgette CERISIER
x2 16 avr 1946 - Paris 15e : Marie Louise BESSAC
dcd 01 mai 1975 - Concarneau (29) section Lanriec

4) Camille Marie LONGUET
née 01 jun 1890 - Marle (02) p. 122/123 en ligne
ép. 03 fev 1912 - Signy l'Abbaye (08) : Henri Louis CHENONIER
dcd 04 mai 1962 - Wasigny (08)

5) Adélaïde Camille LONGUET
née 17 déc 1876 - Signy l'Abbaye (08)
dcd 23 jan 1890 - Marle (02)

***

André Joseph LONGUET
né 18 mar 1875 - Signy l'Abbaye (08)
ép 16 oct 1899 - Epernay (51) : Marie Emelie Zélie LONGUET (née 12 oct 1879 Epernay, fille de Jean Isidore LONGUET & F Marie Louise MISMAQUE)
-> source: http://gw4.geneanet.org/doffam?lang=fr;iz=12123;p=andre+jose...)

Bonnes recherches généalogiques !

Amicalement,
Amandine
Read all the prior posts! The "Y" is what some folks put in the "died" column to indicate "Yes," they are dead....Unfortunately, the Ancestry software takes this fill in the blank response as gospel and makes the assumption that it is the tiny village of Y in the Somme, in France. Nope. It just signfies that some folks cant leave a blank space when they dont know.

"Y" means "Yes" they are dead. Unfortunately folks use this to fill in an empty blank, not realizing that the computer thinks it is the city by that name in France.
