Ebenezer Vicessimus and Elizabeth Ann COOPER

My family comes from Bolton in Lancashire. I have been looking today at a distant branch with probably connections to Samoa or Tahiti.

Elizabeth Ann ALLANSON (born near Bolton ABT 1855) appears to have married Ebenezer Vicessimus COOPER in 1880 in Bolton.

They cannot be found on the 1881/1891/1901 censuses but he seems to have died in Bolton in 1902.

Her mother emigrated in 1881 to the USA and her obituary records

"Her second daughter went to the South Sea Islands as a missionary after 2 years was called to her heavenly reward"

We found this reference

"On December 18, 1900, the chiefs of Tutuila congratulated U.S. President William McKinley on his re-election, and expressed their admiration for Governor Benjamin Franklin Tilley, saying "...you gave us a leader, a Governor, a High Chief, whom we have learned to love and respect." The Reverend Ebenezer Vicesimus Cooper of the London Missionary Society added his praise, writing that 'I cannot conceive of your finding a better man to represent your government in such delicate matters as must always be be associated with the task of 'annexing' than Commander Tilley.'"

Also (referring to Tutuila)

"In 1892 a new start was made when Ebenezer Vicesimus Cooper took up residence on the island...."

Another book has of Tahiti

"Mr Seville left in 1874, from ill-health, and for a time native pastors carried on the work; eventually Rev E V Cooper became the resident missionary and he still occupies the field"

So perhaps he went to Tahiti first after marrying then transferred to Tutuila.

I just wonder if anyone knows anything about them and particular where his wife died, which would probably be around 1882 or 1883.

Martin Briscoe
Fort William

My mother-in law was born in Papeete and I know her father - Robert Walker - was killed in an accident there. Her mother's family - Josephine Brault - lived there and seemed to have travelled extensively through the the islands and to NZ and Australia as well. Looking for any relatives or information about the Walkers or Braults anywhere in the South Pacific. I also have a book written in the 1980s about the Pinder family that also are related.

TAHUI/TEHUI

Can SKS tell me if the surname "TAHUI" or "TEHUI" is a familiar or common one for the Tahitian area.

Our 'oral' family history says "a young man was shipwrecked on the island of Savaii."

That first sentence alone is the first "brick" [one of many] to my familys' "wall".

Where is 'the young man' from? Tahiti? Tonga? Fiji? Southeast Asia? South America? Now, do you understand the gist of my "brick wall"?

The 'young man' remained on Savaii; married a woman from the island Manu'a; given a matai title, "SAVEA"; has 3 daughters, all having big families.

Why do I bother with asking you?

A family clue that may be a connection. The 'young man' had one son [past away as a child, but his name continues on to this day]
- Ta'iti = Tahiti. Samoan word for Tahiti = Ta'iti.

The 'young man' -TAHUI- is my GGG-Grandfather, c.1830. No, I have no knowledge of the name of the ship - there's a thought, I've never tried immigration records.

Can 'some kind soul' help?

--manaia
(USA)
__
==

My grandmother's name was Elizabeth Nawahine Makaokekai Paakaula as she was hanaied by Iowane Paakaula when she arrived from Tahiti. My grandfather whose name was Solomon Piimauna Palau Kaluanawaa had brought her back to Hawaii from Tahiti. Later, he married her and lived in Napoopoo, Hawaii. Grandmother was from the Gilbert Islands and was sent to Tahiti when she was a child because food was scarce and illnesses was rampant. Any information to a list of the children sent to Tahiti during 1855--1870 would be greatly appreciated.

She had hurt her leg and become depressed. I know from her daughter her body was not bought back to England for burial
she came from Coolinge Farm in Kent her maiden name was Lynette Ida Muriel Lowe, married to John Austen Heritage.
Probably known as Muriel. Born 1889 Stroud Green
As far as I know she was buried in Tahiti, I have tried "deaths abroad" but found nothing, so here's hoping
all info gratefully received , many thanks
Marie

I am looking for any information to find out about my grandfather Emile Francois Fourresse (Foures ?). This is very important to my father Rene Raymond Foures who lives in the US. I would like to find out what happened to my grandfather in Noumea. He married in Papeete, Tahiti and then divorced and moved back to New Caledonia until he died in 1940. I would also like to have this information because I am taking part in a genetic study for health reasons.
merci beaucoup pour votre assitance...
Hi,
I am looking for the decendants witht he last name Knowles. The only information I have is that a Eurpopean or american sea captain had married or fathered a child of a tahitian woman, the child then made their way across the pacific and eventually decendants ended up in Fiji, one of which is my husbands grandmother. Our records only go as far back as WILLIAM KNOWLES born in Tonga in 1865 and then married in Fiji. An old Aunty gave us the info.So any additional info would help.Am wondering if there were any children from Captain Josiah Knowles who landed in Tahiti in 1858?

Kind regards
Seruwaia Sanday

I have a Y-DNA match to 6 (of 96 sampled) individuals who who were part of a Dr. Hammer's world wide Anthropological studies and were of European ancestry but located in Polynesie. Because of the nature of the study the participant's names are not available. This would represent a common ancestor probably circa 1500 to 1700 and could not have occurred after about 1750. My ancestry is heavily English. So the question becomes who, now in Polynesie, would be a descendant of a Englishman named Cook?

Looking For Info on the FORTES or TUMANAVA Surnames

Born in Portugal (????), Seraphin Manuel Fortes travelled to Tahiti in the late 1700s-1800s. ( The above name could be spelt incorrectly) he married a Tahitian woman by the name of Rei Tumanava in assumably Papeete. They had one child born in Rarotonga on the 27/12/1878, in the Cook Islands, by the name of Manuel Fortes, who later married to Mere Mitchell. Manuel Fortes was baptised on the 15/04/1895 in Rarotonga by Fr. BERNADIN CASTANIE, and the sponsors being, TEHEMA (Tahiti) and MARETA CUMMINGS. ( Info from the Dioceses of Rarotonga). Mere Mitchell's mother was Roimata-nui from Mitiaro, also in the Cook Islands. If anyone can help me in my search, please reply to me, by email or by posting a message

These people were born on Tahiti. Alice Woodthorpe's father was French/UK, mother UK. She was born 1858. All came to the USA after her birth, including French grandmother and Lydia Foster, born Tahiti 1857. Are there records that far back? If not, would they be in France? Non-existant? Or?
