Looking for information on
Carbon Joseph Thomas Blanch b circa 1843 Marseilles.

His father was Frederick Blanch, Mariner.

Thomas sailed to Liverpool and changed his name to White prior to his marriage in 1865.
Family are unsure of his original name, it mat have been Blanc or Blanche? (Details of his father came from marriage certificate.)
Although he dropped the Carbon Blanch and became Thomas White he named 6 of his 8 children with Carbon as their middle name so feel this may be significant?
Have been at a dead end with this line for some time & look for ways to gain information on his French roots?

My mother in law was Marguerite Therese Tortarolo and she was married to a Roger Gillardi both from Nice.
we are trying to make contact with any remaining family members. She is now in her 81st year and we should just like to find anyone who knew her or any of the family that may still be alive or connected to her in any way.

I am seeking information on Dr. Paul Barbe Bremond (1770 - 1874) Dr. Bremond may have been born in Martinique, went to Marseilles, France and then to the United State in about 1805. He may have been a cousin of Empress Josephine and he was a physician. He settled in New York City, married Catherine Green of Fishkill, NY in 1812 and raised a family of 8 including Paul Bremond, Clarissa Bremond, John H. Bremond, Caroline Virginia Bremond, Eugene Louis Bremond, Jane Louise Bremond, Bierre D. Bremond, and William Augustus Bremond. He died in New York 4 Mar 1874 and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Manhattan, NYC.

Donneaud from Larche, Haute-Alpes

A little information for anyone else who is looking for Donneauds...and a request for more information, hopefully also more genealogy of the Donneauds.
My gg grandfather, Pierre Donneaud, was born in Larche, Haute-Alpes but grew up in Aix-en-Provence. I believe his parents names were Casmir Donneaud & Marie Olivier. No one in that small side of my family knows the birth date or the exact death date except it was sometime after 1921 when he returned to Aix because of the Prohibition here. I know that he was apprenticed in Paris to Georges Auguste Escoffier shortly after the Franco-Prussian war in which they both served in the Navy. He married Eugenie Van Roosebeck Hostens in NYC around 1890. From what my grandmother told me, he worked in some of the finer restaurants of the day in New York City.
I cannot find him on any passenger lists to or from the States. It is possible he signed on as crew as he was a chef. Any ideas how I can look up crew lists? He is not on any census records, my gg grandmother is listed as head of house with their sons' names, but he is absent. I would also like to find out how I can get further information from France, what government agencies do I contact? How do I find out where he is buried? Does anyone out there have any genealogy for his family, any more information about the families Donneaud & Olivier?

They had four kids together, three of which were born in France and the fourth born in Sask. Canada. He emigrated to North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1892. His family followed him in 1893. Born in Orange, Vaucluse, France on April 15, 1922, he served in the Free French Navy in World War II under the Allied command and in Indochina aboard the Richelieu. Post-war, Mr. Viau rejoined the family business, Viau Freres, an agricultural machinery business serving the vineyards of Provence. In 1947, Mr. Viau and his wife Elizabeth Uhaze, returned to the United States where he was employed by J.A. Roebling Inc. and then by Cooper Industries as a member of its management team. After several years in retirement in Sarasota, FL, Mr. Viau moved to Vista Oaks, Lakeway, TX. He supported many charities including veterans and organizations supporting the disabled. We are searching for information on Ship Passenger Lists for Marseille for the year 1876. Would anyone know if there are lists surviving from this time period and if so where one would write to request information from them. Or if there are researchers for this in the area.

We are looking for our family who left France abt 1874 and went to South Africa. They left South Africa in 1876 under duress because of war, came to Marseille for a stop over period where my Great Uncle was born on 22 Apr 1876, then left for Brazil, South America.

Hippolite Martin born abt. 1848 in St. Jean St. Nicolas and died sometime after 26 March 1927.

Zoseme Escalle born abt. 1847 in Benevent and probably died in 1916. He was an Emigration Agent for the government of France.

Lydie Disdier born abt. 1858 in Infournas and died in about 1898 of childbirth complications.

I am looking for any information about a man named Alain Gibert who worked for the French Resistance during World War II. He was a waiter at a restaurant somewhere near or in the town of Marseille (I think). He was a member of a group who ran a safe house for people escaping the Germans. The safe house was found out and he was captured, tortured and killed in a mass grave in the woods along with others. Not sure where the grave is. Any information would be helpful. Thank you!

My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Gastaud and she, along with all of her ancestors, came from a small town north of Nice called "Sclos." My mother left me with an extensive, but poorly written, family tree for this side of the family (with last names missing, etc.), but containing birth and death years! Do I turn to local parishes to obtain records or how do I proceed?

Also, my maternal grandfather came from Briancon. The way the message board breaks down into regions, I am not so sure under which heading I should post a message.

My aunt Carolina FORNARO was born in Marseilles, France in either Feb or Mar 1893. For reasons yet to be discovered, my Grandfather Giuseppe FORNARO was still in Itri, Italy while my Grandmother Rachele FORNARO nee CANNELLA was staying in Marseilles with their first child, Angelina. While still in Marseilles, she then gave birth to Carolina.

According to notations on my Grandfather's birth act, he left Itri, Italy on 23 Mar 1893 and soon after boarded the SS Massilia of the Fabre Line in Naples, Italy. The ship stopped in Marseilles, France to take on more passengers among whom were my Grandmother and the couple's two daughters, Angelina and Carolina. The SS Massilia arrived in NYC on 15 April 1893.

This birth in France creates several questions that I hope someone will be able to help me with.

Was there an Italian community in Marsielle at that time where Rachele might have been staying?

Would a child born on French soil to a couple of Italian citizenship be considered a French citizen or Italian citizen?

Would the birth be registered in Marseilles ? If the birth wasn't registered in Marseilles, where might it have been registered, if at all?

If the birth is registered in Marseilles, is it possible to acquire a copy of the birth registration/certificate?

I believe my great grandfather Leon Donat was born in Marseille in approx. 1866, the son of Francis Donat, a captain in the French Merchant Navy. Leon left home at around 12 years of age and settled in Birkenhead, England.

My Great Great Grandfather Amadeus Isnardy was born in Nice around 1840. At 14 he stowed away on a ship bound for Mexico. He eventually ended up in Canada in British Columbia where he married Julienne Willmatkwa. Does anyone know anything about Isnardy roots in Nice or elsewhere in France? I am looking for info on Louise Jacoutot (nee Mullaire) who was born 12/2/1856 in France and died ?/8/1832 or 1882. She is buried in Berry Lawn Cemetery in Carlstadt, NJ (USA). I can't read all the info on her tombstone, but she is buried next to Calixte Mullaire, who emigrated from Marseille to NY, and M. Mullaire .

I do not know who she married, other than his last name was Jacoutot. Any help would be appreciated.

Genevieve Marie Dragon b. 8 Sep 1898 Marseille, France

Hippolyte migrated to San Francisco, California, USA through Mexico. He owned the Dragon Bakery in SF. He brother, Paul Emil, helped him in the business. Genevieve and her mother Marie came over from France and lived with Hippolyte for a time but Marie eventually returned to France.

Both Hippolyte and Paul died in San Francisco. Genevieve died in Reno, Nevada.

Charles Cronier b 1-15-1804 in Marseilles, France. At age fourteen, he was apprenticed as a cabin boy on a French warship.. After having endured a torturous whipping with a 'cat-'f-nine-tails' while aboard that warship, Cronea deserted in New York in 1819 and signed aboard an American vessel bound for Charleston.

My GG Grandfather Stephen Bavouset (b. 1820) and his brother George (b. 1817) came from France and immigrated to America. We think that Stephen was born in Paris. His wife's given name was Francis and they had a daughter named Phelamene. When in the United States they had a son named August, who was sent to France for his education.

Je recherche désespérément tous renseignements ou documents sur mon père Armand Prat, né à Relizane en Algérie le 8 avril 1923. Mon père est ancien combattant de la deuxieme guerre mondiale.

Il est le fils de François Prat et de Joséphine Hatagnera et il a marié ma mère, Mathea Polidori, le 29 août 1945 à Moltifao en Corse. Je suis le seul fils né de cette union.

On m’a raconté diverses histoires contradictoires au sujet de son décès. Ma mère m’a dit que quelqu’un a dit à mon grand-père qu’il est mort à Lyon en 1947, mais qu’il a été enterré en Algérie.

The good news is that the LDS church has microfilmed from what we can tell all of the Hautes Alpes records. The bad news is that unless you live in the Salt Lake City area you will need to find a contact to find the films for you. The films can only be found on Web View, which is only available in the Salt Lake City library. These films were microfilmed in 1999 from what we can tell. Lynette-Renee Escalle Packer had a contact at the library and found out about Web View and passed the information to me. It means that extensive research can be done now in this area if you happen to know what town your family came from in the Hautes Alpes. If you would like to know more, drop me a line on my email and let me know if you could use some assistance.
