Hello,

Here are some additional infos to complete Ian's excellent message as I had also searched the matter (but was slower to answer!) :P

First I was confused by the mention of Ste Trinité as the parish exists nowadays but not in that time. La Trinité is a small village (626 inhabitants in 1793, about 290 in 2006) made of a dozen hamlets (see http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Trinit%C3%A9_%28Savoie%29), southwest of Chambéry: https://maps.google.fr/maps?saddr=Chamb%C3%A9ry&daddr=73...

From what I've seen while browsing the records, there are several SALLIER and VULLIEN (sometimes spelled VULLIEND) families there but the village being so small, they very likely are all related one way or another.

Here are Michel and Jeanne' children that I've noted down (I may have missed some though). In brackets is the corresponding Latin name from the baptism record:

1745 - Benoît (Benedictus) - page 268
1747 - Joseph (Josephus) - p.270
1749 - Pierre (Petrus) - p.282
1750 - Marie (Maria) - p.287
1755 - Martin (Martinus) - p.301
1758 - Pétronille (Petronilla) - p.315
1761 - Louise (Ludovica) - p.330 (died 1763 - p.337)
1763 - Anselme (Anselmus) - p.340

Also, Michel's father name is Hugues SALLIER and Jeanne's is Antoine VALLIEN. Anselme's godparents were Benoît EMERY and Benoîte GOLLIET, from the parish of Villard-d'Héry.

Lastly, you'll find another interesting record on page 308 (1st on the left) as it relates a family matter:

« On May 22, 1756, in the church of La Trinité, was baptised Joseph, illegitimate son of Jean Joseph LOZAT (son of deceased Nicolas Eugène LOZAT) from the parish of Villard-Léger, and of Françoise SALLIER, daughter of deceased Antoine SALLIER dit L'ABBÉ, from the parish of La Trinité. Based on the declaration of said Françoise SALLIER as she made it in front of the chateau owner VALLIEND from the comté of Montmayeur and in front of Mr the Judge of the marquisate of La Rochette who ruled a sentence, as evidenced by Pierre, son of late Antoine SALLIER and brother of said Françoise. Moreover, said girl also confessed and declared on May 22, 1756 to Michel, son of deceased Hugues SALLIER dit L'ABBÉ and to Claude, son of late Jacques EMERY, both from the village (hamlet) of La Cochette, parish of La Trinité, that said child and another, born together, the latter baptised at the home of his late father by Michel SALLIER, because of the danger of imminent death and who died later and was buried in La Trinité on May 23; and that both children were of and belonged to Jean Joseph, son of Nicolas Eugène LOZAT, from the parish of Villard-Léger. The two witnesses above mentioned, meaning Michel SALLIER and Claude EMERY, having recounted the declaration and confession of said Françoise SALLIER, mother of the twins, that they thus were born from the acts of Jean Joseph LOZAT, I (priest) baptised the one named Joseph and also buried the other, of whom godparents are Claude EMERY and Marie MASSET, from La Trinité. »

Note the county name of chatelain VALLIEND : Montmayeur. That sounds very much like Monmayer/Montmayeaux, don't you think? ;)

Good search!
Amandine

Hi Michael

Anselm SALLIER, son of Michael and Joanne SALLIER, was born and baptised on the 22nd March 1763 according to the Parish Register of the church of St-Jean-Baptiste (St. John the Baptist), La Trinité, Savoie. These registers record a marriage between Michael SALLIER, son of the deceased Hugo SALLIER, and Joanne VULLIEN, daughter of Antony VULLIEN on the 28th April 1744.

These parish registers are on line via the Departmental Archives (AD) of Savoie. They cover baptisms, marriages and burials for the period 1646-1773 (Type d'acte: B M S - Cote 3E339 - Registres paroissiaux : baptêmes, mariages, sépultures).

http://www.savoie-archives.fr/

http://www.archinoe.net/cg73v2/registre_liste.php?PHPSID=a03...#

The information I have given above is my translation from the medieval Latin used in the registers at pages 340 and 263 (AD view numeration).

Today, La Trinité is a commune in the arrondissement of Chambéry, Savoie, France. When Anselm was born, it was part of the Duchy of Savoy and not part of France which annexed it in 1860.

I have printed out the respective entries which includes the names of the officiating clergy, baptismal sponsors and nuptial witnesses and can onsend them if you have trouble navigating the AD website.

Regards
Ian Jordan
Sydney, Australia
Salut - Hello,

I looked at your family tree on Ancestry.fr and I found a match for the person furthest back in your family tree at GeneaNet : Jacques LOVAT-LOVATIERE (Né le 17 août 1755 - Miribel-les-Échelles, 38380, Isère, Rhône-Alpes, FRANCE) --- Marié (le 1er février 1780, Miribel-les-Échelles, 38380, Isère, Rhône-Alpes, FRANCE) avec Marie JACOLIN

He did not live in Savoie, but rather the Dauphiné, but he seems to be the person you are researching.

His occupation was a weaver of cloth.

The GeneaNet researchers' family tree also shows three additional generations of family members, with all of the children and sources noted, which you do not have seem to have in your tree. All of the ancestors appear to have lived in the same town: Miribel-les-Échelles.

May I suggest that you go to GeneaNet and continue your research there. --- Or, of course, you can do this research yourself. The records should be available to you at the website of the Departmental Archives of Isère, which I am certain you know.

Please note: Here are other variations of the name you are researching : LOVAT, LOUVAT, LOVAT-LOVATIERE, LOVATIERE, LOUVATIERE, LOUVAT-LOUVATIERE, LOVAT DIT LOVATIERE, LOUVAT DIT LOUVATIERE.

LOUVAT and LOVAT are Francoprovençal language spelling variations for the French word « LOUP », which means "WOLF" in the English language.

Bonne quête !

Thank you for those insights John. My journey in genealogy has been a very long one. The Pigman surname in Ky. was spelled Pigmon up until the 1940's and the family has said that it was originally French.

I have recently found records in Correze and in Rhone-Alpes with the spelling Pigmon currently transcribed as Pimond and Pimont. The confusing thing is that before coming to North Carolina before 1748, I believe our family was in England for around 3 generations. There are records there of Guilliame Pigman, George Pigman, and Francis Pigman in Old Hunstanton, and Norwich, Norfolk.

The earlier ones in Correze are even spelled Piemond which is the Italian-French version of Piemonte or Piedmont. With the "g" as a "j" sound would change the meaning from "foot of the mountain" to "to take the mountain".

I think I remember reading that either in Piedmontese or occitan if there was a "g" in the middle it was dropped and a "d" added at the end.

My y-DNA currently places my R1b L2+/Z49+ and Z142(currently being tested) in the region of the Swiss, French, and Austrian Alps.

Could it be that Piejmon or Piejemon was the original in Piedmontese, Latin or Occitan and the conversion to French is the reason for all the variations?

Common throughout the Romance languages and sometimes beyond, g followed by e or i is generally not the sound in "gold", but the sound in "generally" or another "soft" (palatized, aspirated, etc.) sound. Also, the treatment of the letter "j" in some languages is similar to the g in "generally", at other times similar to the y in young. Certainly in French and related dialects, subsituting a j for ge at some point in the past 5 centuries is not very surprising.

As for the DNA situation, France is considered vastly under-represented in the current databases, so any conclusions based on hapltypes found in the neighboring areas have to be regarded as tentative. Also, those haplotypes are of ancient origin, and there is abundant evidence that a large number of families now in France and Switzerland have traveled widely during the past 5 centuries, and likely also before that. National boundaries have changed -- consider the once flourishing empires of the Burgundians, the house of Savoie, etc.

Ultimately, we have to rely on evidence to build a genealogy, one generation at a time, and that usually means we have to deal with local sources. The linguistic and genetic clues have their place, but documentary sources must come first.

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

John,
I am really interested in the "g" versus "j" sound.

By doing extensive y-DNA testing, I have learned that my R1b L-2 matches are mostly in the alps in Switzerland, French alps and in Tyrol, Austria.

What language determines the j sound from the g? Is it the German language, Piedmontese, or something else?

Curtis Pigman(Pigmon/Pimond/Pimont)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my research efforts regarding one EDWARD FINEL I wish to communicate with anyone researching the surname of FINEL that might have someone, or know of someone, who would have been in the Massachusetts U.S.A. area in the time period of 1700 to 1748. This man EDWARD FINEL 1, we believe had ancestry from France and was probably Christen Baptized named EDWARD, or his father was at this time. Because this man birthed a son named EDWARD FINEL; born 27 October 1748 in Massachusetts and because of the naming patterns in the U.S.A. at that time period he could have been named for his father, or his grandfather.

It is not known at this time in my researching if the first FINEL immigrated to the U.S.A., or if he might have been part of a military unit stationed in or near Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. I have been unable to determine any information relative to this man; birth, country of origin, death, or whatever.

The lady we believe to be the mother of his child could have also been a friend or relative of the real mother. Although, there are indicator’s that this lady was his mother in some of my findings.

Thank you

Hi Sylvia,

I've browsed through some of your previous messages and I must say this isn't a clear-cut case at all! No wonder you weren't able to find the record if you can't find the town... It's an absolute required step in France as we keep records locally and there isn't a national database as such, though some genealogical companies and associations are slowly indexing almost everything.

Anyway, as you've been told repeatedly, I couldn't find a Bouen in the (French) Alps. I've found mention of a "Bouën en Forest" in some records from Lyon, but after research I think it could be misspelled and refers in fact to Boën in the Forez area, now called Boën-sur-Lignon: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo%C3%ABn-sur-Lignon It is is surrounded by mountains, but they're part of Massif Central, not the Alps. I checked the records just in case but found no Winton or even Louis born during this period.

But if your source is to be trusted (and again, I agree with those who said a photo would be welcome to allow direct reading and interpretation) and your Louis Winton is indeed born in 1814 and English, not French, I wonder if there is in fact any record to find! I mean, if it was before the war and his father was regularly established in a French town/village, he would have to record the birth, of course. But during this conflict, do you really see an English citizen going to the town hall to record the birth of his son while his fellow countrymen were fighting the French troops everywhere? Frankly? I don't. Another possibility would be the mother was French and they weren't married so she recorded the child under her maiden name. Then, after the war, he either married her or/and recognized the child. This I could see, but without additional information, it's just an hypothesis amongst other ones anyway.

I'm sorry to say I have no idea where to look after that. I guess you haven't found any relative of Louis to work with? No sibling, cousin, uncle or anything? No mention of family as his children godparents? Who raised him and where did he lived? At this point, any clue would really help.

Best regards,
Amandine

Well, hello to you too!

Your family is from Giromagny so checking their registers for André's marriage would be a good idea, wouldn't it? Take a look first at the 10-years indexes (TD = Tables Décennales) to have the exact date: June 10, 1809 then go for the record itself in the registers.

You'll find it here: http://www.archives.cg90.fr/ark:/12997/a011341578574ouYrQf/1...

Also, as I've said previously, http://www.lisa90.org/ indexed some of Giromagny records (detailed list of their archives: http://www.lisa90.org/lisa1/pages/data_list.php?lang=en) so it'll help you going further too:

- André CACHELIN birth: http://www.lisa90.org/lisa1/pages/AffAct.php?numA=142971&amp...

- Marie Anne Adélaïde MARSOT birth: http://www.lisa90.org/lisa1/pages/AffAct.php?numA=143201&amp...

- Jean Baptiste CACHELIN & Anne Baptiste DOLET marriage: http://www.lisa90.org/lisa1/pages/AffAct.php?numA=145081&amp...

- Joseph MARSOT & Marie Anne TRAVERS marriage: http://www.lisa90.org/lisa1/pages/AffAct.php?numA=145074&amp...

- Henry CACHELIN & Anne Barbe KINCHELER marriage: http://www.lisa90.org/lisa1/pages/AffAct.php?numA=144538&amp...

Before that (the records go back to 1685), you'll have to either browse the parish records yourself or try to find a connection with other people data (don't forget to check Geneanet).

Regards,
Amandine

Hi Sylvia,

I'm sorry you had such poor luck with your dealing with whatever administration you've contacted but I can assure you French archives are quite easy to access if you have the exact place and date. And privacy laws of course don't apply in that case, and even for vital records less than 75 years old you can still get an extract, only without ancestry if you're not directly related.

Maybe there was a misunderstanding somewhere. You don't have to "buy" a certificate, town halls usually sent recent ones for free though it is good form to send some (French) post stamps to pay for copying and sending costs. For more older records, by law they have no obligation to send it to you but they usually do if they still have the records and are no too busy. Finally, departemental archives have at least one set (sometimes both) of records and though they generally don't do research for you, many of them have already put vital records & censuses (and sometimes more like military service or notarial records) on-line where you can access them for free.

You can see that there: http://fr.geneawiki.com/index.php/Archives_en_ligne
In dark green are all the departements who put on-line parish records (before 1792) AND civil records (after 1792 & less than 75/100 years old). The websites links are detailed below.

Another list page with the content of each departement website: http://www.francegenweb.org/~archives/archivesgenweb/?id=adf...

And another one with a click-able map: http://www.archives-departementales.com/

You'll find some other links & infos that might help you in my message here (scroll down if necessary): http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.weurope.france.general...

Let me know if you need more infos to find your G-grandfather birth certificate and I'll be pleased to help you further if I can.

Regards,
Amandine

Hello Leslie,

What a merry chase but I've got good news for you! :P

Firstly, I thought your ancestors came from Viry as Germagny in Haute-Savoie is a very small hamlet attached to it, but there were no trace of them there.

Fortunately, Cachelin is a very rare surname in France (see the births recorded from 1891 to 1990 here: http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?nom=c...) and mainly present in the 'Territoire de Belfort' departement and Giromagny is one of the birth towns. Close enough spelling for me to check and it paid off!

Giromagny: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giromagny

The birth dates you gave were close but not exact either, but a look in the T.D. (Tables Décennales = 10-years indexes) gave the information easily. And bonus, I've found their marriage there on September 3, 1840.

Territoire de Belfort archives: http://www.archives.cg90.fr/?id=recherche_guidee (état-civil = vital records, recensements = censuses, matricules militaires = military service records)

How to access the archives: http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=...

Tip: at the bottom of the pictures, on the right, just above the toolbar, is a very small line containing the direct link of the record. Copy it and you'll be able to access it easily any time, like this:

Joseph Constant CACHELIN - b. 11 oct 1813
-> last on the left : http://www.archives.cg90.fr/ark:/12997/a011341578574ouYrQf/1...

Marie Elizabeth GROBOILLOT - b. 16 oct 1811
-> 2nd on the left: http://www.archives.cg90.fr/ark:/12997/a011341578574ouYrQf/1...

their marriage: 3 sep 1840 in Giromagny [Territoire de Belfort]
-> 2nd on the left: http://www.archives.cg90.fr/ark:/12997/a011341578574GilwF7/2...

main content of the certificates:

1) Joseph Constant CACHELIN birth certificate
***********************************************
- recorded: Oct 14, 1813 in Giromagny [Territoire de Belfort]
- birth: Oct 13, 1813 - 05:00 pm
- parents: André CACHELIN, weaver aged 35 & Marianne Adélaïde MARSOT, living in Giromagny
- witnesses: Jean Baptiste BRUN, mason aged 37 & Benoit PAROT, weaver aged 46; both living in Giromagny and who signed as well as the father.

2) Marie Elizabeth GROBOILLOT birth certificate
***********************************************
- recorded: Oct 6, 1811 in Giromagny [Territoire de Belfort]
- birth: today Oct 6, 1811 - 07:00 pm
- parents: Jean Pierre GROBOILLOT, weaver aged 35 & Marie CHEVIRON, from Giromagny
- witnesses: Henri HUMBERT, farmer aged 61 & Benoit PAROT, weaver aged 44; both liv. in Giromagny and who signed as well as the father.

3) Joseph Constant CACHELIN & Marie Elizabeth GROBOILLOT marriage certificate
***********************************************
- recorded: September 3, 1840 - 08:00 am in Giromagny [Territoire de Belfort]

- groom: Joseph Constant CACHELIN, storekeeper, aged 27, born in Giromagny on Oct 13, 1813, living in Mobile (USA).
Hi Leslie, I too have been trying to find out info from the Alpes in France. After many emails I finally got a reply from France to say they could not find any info on my gt grandfathers birth in 1814 and even if they did they are not allowed to let out any information or let me buy a birth certificate etc which is crazy as he died in 1890. Its not like we were going to invade his privacy or anything. We have gone back to him and have now come to a standstill. We have his exact date and place of birth but can't get any further as we know nothing of his parents or if he had any siblings.
Good luck with your search, I hope you get further than we did.
I have not been able to find any information on Joseph Constant Cachelin. He was born in 14 Oct 1812 in Germagny, Haute-Savoie, Rhône-Alpes, France and died in 1896. He was married to Marie Elizabeth Grossboillat, who was born on 11 Oct 1815 in France and died 11 Aug 1879 in De Soto, Washington, Nebraska, USA. Together they had seven kids that I know of. If you have nay information at all I would really appreciate it!

I have a theory about the Jean Marie thing. I have the birth records for both Jean Marie and Antoine. They were both born in Entre-deux-Guiers, Isère (south side of Le Guier River) while the other three children were born in Les Échelles, Savoie (north side of the river). Jean Marie was born in 1879 and Antoine in 1882 - they were definitely two separate people.

The first census both could show up in was the 1886 but only Jean Marie is there BUT his ages makes him born in 1882 not 1879. This continues on until the 1906 census by which time his father had died (he was in the 1901 census). Now it shows Antoine with an 1882 birth year, living with his mother.

I think Jean Marie died either in infancy or as a young child, probably close to when Antoine was born. I haven't been able to find a death record. I think Antoine's dad, for whatever reason, started calling Antoine Jean Marie, because it's as soon as his dad had died that he is able to call himself Antoine. I would certainly understand if that caused Antoine some major issues with his dad.

The other hint for this theory is that in the 1901 census Jean Marie is living with his parents and is employed as a locksmith. In the 1906 census Antoine is a lathe operator which advanced locksmiths usually were.

There's usually some truth in family rumours. Sometimes they provide wonderful clues. I had one friend who's dad claimed his great-great grandfather came over from France and married an "Indian Princess" but most of the family said it was just a pipe dream and laughed about it. I recently "found" her and discovered not only was it true, she and her French husband were extremely important in the local history, there are plaques in their memory and citing their accomplishments, and she was Tecumseh's cousin. They aren't laughing anymore - lol.

Soosi
Thank you Soosi, You have been so helpful, and have given me hope. I truly am in awe of all you are helping me with. I had a hard time finding Tree pages, but I think I did okay. Let me know.
My email is cdayhoyt@yahoo.com if you need to contact me. Just put "from soosi" in the subject so I'll know. Thanks again. Our whole family thanks you. I am less than computer savvy, but I know it will be the key to unlock many mysteries.... so I try to go about it the best I can. Most of my family who are doing this...well, cheering me on from a distance....are in hopes of some answers also.
I admit, there is a bunch of weird or odd things to finding out about my Louvat family from the start. I've heard many rumors over the years, but nothing that is tangible at this point. My Mom wanted so desperately to find these connections to her beloved Father. She traveled to France with her Mother twice or three times (while he was living too), but never seemed to find more about her Dad. He never talked about his home, but went back twice that I know of. One of my cousins said he was named Jean Marie at birth, but changed it once in America because of it considered a woman's name here. But the ship records says his name was Antoine from the start.
Oops, typo with the wedding date.

Yes, sending me an invite would be best. Go to your tree. Near the top of the page, next to the tree name will be "Tree Pages" (underlined). Click on that and from the menu that drops down select "Share your tree". On the page it takes you to chose to select by "Username". In the Username type "Soospad" and change the type from "Guest" to "Editor". Then click on "Send Invite" and it should get to me. Then I can add all sorts of information and document to your tree.

I live near Victoria, BC, Canada.

Soosi

What I'll do to make looking at things easier for you is to start a Louvat family tree. Then I can post documents to each person and provide translations. I'll send you an invitation to it, once I get it going, that will give you complete access to it - you'll be able to edit and add to it even if you don't keep an Ancestry.com subscription.

Just thought I'd add the distances of the places mentioned as it always seems they're so far apart, but they're all very close.

From Les Echelles
to Entre-Deux-Guiers: 0.53 km
to Miribel: 3.73 km
to La Bauche: 4.85 km

Cheers,

Soosi

I'm at a loss for words, and so appreciative that a total stranger would offer such help. Totally amazing!
I can not understand how to find those documents in the two sites you gave me. I tried clicking on "translate" but still unable to get to those records specific to my Grandfather.
Again, my computer know-how is so lacking. Also, I found records of his US WW1 Draft Registration, but an older cousin has a picture (I've not seen yet) of him in a French military uniform, I believe. It might be a US uniform, but she thought it was French. Also, he came here with a trade, and the ship occupation looked to read engr. I'm assuming it's short for engineer. Would there be any record of French military and/or schooling for engineering? He may have just put that, but I know he did have that type knowledge during his working years. He was also extremely talented in musical instruments and in song.
I don't mean to have you looking for a needle in a haystack, but wondering if you could steer me in the direction of the haystack, anyway. Thank you so very much! You've been so kind. Kiki

Hello Soosi!
I can't thank you enough! I've printed off this information and will read it over and over and share this with others here. I am thrilled!
I don't speak French so those sites are difficult at best. It has a "translate" I can click on, but the maneuvering is tricky as I'm not that computer savvy. But I've saved those sites also to look again with help from someone here who knows how.
Antoine's only daughter, my Mother, has passed but had searched for years through writing snail mail letters to the town officials asking for help in locating more information, but was not able to find help from anyone. Thank you again, you have helped me tremendously! Kiki

Hello!

I managed to track down Antoine for you. I couldn't find any record of his birth in Les Echelle. I looked at his available Ancestry.com documents and on his passenger record for his trip in 1930, he put his birthplace as Entre-deux-Guiers which is in the the Isère department and I found him there.

He was born 2 September 1882 at 1 in the morning to Antoine Louvat-Louvatiere, age 39, a labourer from Miribel, Isère and Annette Despine-Dagaz, age 28 from La Bauche, Savoie.

Antoine senior was born 14 May 1843 in Miribel, Laurent-du-Pont, Isère to Antoine (who died 30 January 1863 in Miribel) and Marie Berger.

Annette was born Anne Dugaz (not sure where the Despine came from) on 20 April 1851 in La Bauche, Les Echelles, Savoie to Joseph Dagaz and Françoise Gonneton.

Antoine and Annette were married on 14 May 1843 in Miribel. Besides Antoine they had the following children:

1. Joseph born 18 October 1874 in Les Echelles and died 24 March 1876 in Les Echelles.
2. Adéle, born 7 February 1876 in Les Echelles.
3. Jean Marie, born born 10 June 1879 in Entre-deux-Guiers.
4. Marie Mélanie, born 2 August 1893 in Les Echelles, died 12 November 1897 in Les Echelles.

Now for the odd part. I decided to look up the family in the censuses and found them in the 1891 and 1896 Les Echelle records living on rue de la Gare, Le Bourg, Les Echelles.

The 1891 Census lists Antoine senior, Annette, Adéle age 14, Jean Marie age 9, and Antoine senior's sister Léonie age 24. No mention of Antoine.

The 1896 Census lists Antoine senior age 52, Annette age 42, Adéle age 18, Jean Marie age 13, and Mélanie age 2. Again no Antoine.

I searched the 1891 and 1896 censuses for Les Echelles, La Bauche, Entre-deux-Guiers and Miribel but didn't find Antoine. Who knows why his parents left him off of two censuses or maybe he was away.

Last, on that landing record of 1930, Antoine lists his closest relative in France as his nephew Georges Routin of Les Echelles.

I checked the 1906 census and found the Routin's living at 15 rue de Grenoble and they were:

François Routin born 1870, head of household.
Adéle Routin née Louvat-Louvatiere, born 1877, wife.
Margeurite Routin, born 1901, daughter.
Georges Routin, born 1905, son.

Two doors down at 19 rue de Grenoble, Antoine was living with his widowed mother, Annette. No sign of his brother Jean Marie.

The 1931 census has Georges Routin and his wife Marie living at 73 rue de Chambéry in Les Echelles. No one else was listed so I presume they'd all passed away. Georges and Marie were still at that address for the 1936 census (the last one available online) - it was just the two of them, no children.

You can look up all the documents at:

http://www.savoie-archives.fr/1380-etat-civil-en-ligne.htm

and

http://www.archives-isere.fr/2369-registres-paroissiaux-et-d...

I'm happy to help with translations or any further research.

Cheers,

Soosi
I've found out that the name was shortened to Louvat from Louvat de la Louvatierre. I would just love to know more about this man, his family, background info, etc. He came from Savoie, France. Thanks!

My Grandfather is Antoine Louvat, born 1882 in the small village of Les Echelle, Savoie France. He went to Canada in 1906 and then to Maine USA around 1907 or 1908. I know of one cousin, Louie Bieaux (or Beaulieu) whose family owned a working farm. I believe he had siblings but can't seem to find any information beyond that.
His father was Antoine Louvat and mother was Annette Daguez. Both remained in France. I'm new at this. I would appreciate any direction given or any help.
