He left behind on Gibraltar (12) brothers and sisters, Eleuterio Coll, Isadoro John, Jaime, Rosendo, Jane, Mary, Anthony, John, Lorenzo, Lupito, Manuel and Pasqual.

Looking for information about William Armstrong, who was stationed in Gibraltar with the (English) 11th regiment. Exact dates not known, however 2 children (Robert and Jane)baptised at the local C of E (or equivalent) in 1817 and 1820 respectively. Wife's name given in various records as Hannah, Honor and Norah (surname not known). Robert came to Australia in the 11th regiment in 1845 and stayed. Significant amount of information about his descendants held, but nothing known of William, his wife, Jane, other children. Nothing in English military birth / marriages records for the period. Apparently no regimental records remain. Can anyone help ?

I am researching the family of John and Julia GREEN. John was born c1845 and was a private in the 15th Regiment. They had two children in Gibraltar, Mary Ann b 1866 and Albert b 1867. Albert married Eliza HAYWARD in Gibralter and had a son Henry b c1895.
Mary Ann married James RIRIE in India, and they moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Marriages in Gibraltar

I don't have much to go on but I am looking for the marriage of John Cotter, 3rd Foot Reg - The Buffs.

His eldest son was born in 1852 on Malta and his second in 1858 on Corfu.

Family history records that his wife was Spanish - her mother might have been English as her maiden name was probably Gibson. Luis is the name that is given to their descendants so that could be Mrs Cotter's maiden name.

I'm guessing they might have married in Gibraltar ... John Cotter was in India from about 1840 to 1850 and in Limerick in 1851 when the regiment embarked for Malta.

Is there any way to find out more?

i think he was the son of RABBI R.H.M (Rafael, Haim, Moshe) Benaim and Massuda daughter of R. Moshe Naim/Benaim..? (one of them d.08/04/1920, Gibraltar?).

Is there anyone who may be able to trace a death that may of taken place in Gibralter in between the above years?

I would like to find the death of a Charlotte Glover who would be between her 20's to 40's.She was the wife of a Richard Hay Glover who was a merchant He died in London in 1861 and was a widower,so we think charlotte may of died in Gibralter as it does not appear to be in the uk.

Also was their a census in Gibralter in 1861?

Just wondering if anyone has details of Frederick Pullen, born 1810 in Gibraltar. In the 1851 census he lived in Kensington, Middlesex and had a son called Charles. Looking for The relatives of the Bocarisa family from Gibraltar. Nicholas Bocarisa fathered a son Vicente born 1861. The mother was Ana Sodi b 1863 . They had numerous children one of which was Maria del Carmen born 1901 Gibraltar. She migrated to the USA with her US Navy Husband James Bradley. Her younger brother Harry migrated to England and had sons Braulio, and Vicente and I believe a few more. Vicente was born in 1927. Harry died in England and I believe Vicente died there as well.

I have a relation Gladys Winifred Goodison who was born on 24 July 1916 in Buena Vista Gibraltar. I have searched the FRC for British overseas births but can not find any record of the birth. The parents were stationed there during WW1. Can anyone help find the birth record so I can obtain the birth certificate.

Daniel KELLEY & Maria RUIZ

My husband's great-great-grandparents, Daniel KELLEY and Maria Victoria RUÍZ, were "married by banns in the Kings Chapel" on 17 Dec 1832. We have a copy of their marriage certificate which begins, "An Extract from the REGISTER of MARRIAGES Kept in the Garrison of GIBRALTAR, 1832".

We have been unable to find out much about these two people. We know that Daniel was born in England in 1812, served in the military (apparently stationed on Gibralter), and immigrated to New Orleans, LA 1849-1854. Maria was born in Malaga, Spain in 1818; but, according to the above-mentioned marriage certificate, she was residing "in this Garrison" (i.e., Gibraltar) at the time of her marriage.

All eight of their children are reported to have been born on Gibraltar 1833-1849. Other than the marriage certificate, we have nothing to indicate when, why, or how Daniel and/or Maria came to Gibraltar, or what their lives would have been like during the time they lived there.

Much as we would love to do so, we are unable to visit Gibraltar in person. However, we would greatly appreciate any suggestions about where we might be able to locate records, pictures, etc. which could possibly help us to learn more about these two people and their family.

Also, are there any pictures or diagrams of what the Gibraltar Garrison would have looked like at the time that Daniel and Maria lived there?

I checked the baptismal and birth records at the Catholic church in Gibraltar when I was there a few years ago, but found nothing. I believe there may also have been a relatives: Daniel S. Kelley? (Born around the same time there.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Am helping a friend start her family tree and was wondering if someone could help please.
My friend has been told that her great grandfather was born in Gibraltar abt 1880.
Ive managed to find a possibility in the 1901 census - by then they lived in Cornwall (which links in)which says he and two siblings were born in Gibraltar. Frederick being in 1877.
But we cant find him in 1881/1891 census.
The info we have is as follows....

FREDERICK SAMPSON b abt 1880 Gibraltar
he married someone called Anne, he was in the Navy in WW11
we know they had three children - one definitely born in 1912

I am researching my Great Grandmother, Mary Epsworth, who I believe was born to father, George Epsworth and mother Jane Tudella (poss Turello). I have tracked down a marriage cert from GRO which shows this marriage taking place in Kings Chapel, as George was in the Royal Artillery. I also belive that I have found him in the 1871 census at Dover Castle. I can find nothing before then, so cannot prove that this is him, or that he is related to me! Can anyone asssist at all?

My grandfather's uncle, Thomas MULREADY was stationed at Gibraltar in the English Army during the late 1880s and early 1890s. I have found birth record of 3 children born at that time in Gibraltar.
Where would Roman Catholic baptisms take place? Is there a record to be consulted? Or is there a Roman Catholic church in Gibraltar where it would have been routine for the baptism of army personnel's children take place.
How can I obtain such record?

My ancestor Eleanor Willocks is said to have been born Gibraltar c1796. Parents said to be Robert Willocks and Ann, formerly Collins. Alternate spellings: Ellenor, Wallocks.

I would appreciate any information, especially birth and baptism details in Gibraltar.

Eleanor had a cousin, George Edward Willocks, who in October 1865 when he wrote to Eleanor, was the Royal Engineers Office Keeper at Guernsey, on 14 shillings per week.

Eleanor married John Joseph Pallier 27 Mar 1821 St Anne's, Soho, London. Three daughters were baptised in a single baptism ceremony at St Marys in St Marylebone on 21 Aug 1837. Shortly afterwards, they emigrated to Australia, though John Joseph may have gone earlier. I have not ascertained ships or dates of passage. They lived at Narellan, NSW. Descendants include Lamont, Forbes, Waterworth.

I am looking for a marriage record for John COPELAND b. 1840 in London who married Sophia (unknown surname) b. around 1844 in Gibraltar and her three daughters all born in Gibraltar. Mary, born 1865, Ada born 1867 and Alice born 1871.

It is possible John Copeland married Sophia or Sophie later in England around 1885, and the three girls are not his, so I might be looking for another surname other than Copeland for the births of all four females. Sophie Copeland died in London in 1898 aged 54.

Her surname comes from her marriage certificate - it's difficult to read and could be slightly different (but I think it's correctly spelt as follows).

I was told once that there no-one called Beaman in the Gibraltar census records of 1777 or 1791 but I have not seen the records myself.

I don't know whether the child's surname was changed when his mother Jacintha remarried. I know him as Louis W. Russell, my great-great grandfather.
I do know he always says in US censuses that his mother was from Portugal and his father from Hanover (or from Germany)and was a soldier on Gibraltar when he was born in 1818.
Will a church there look up by date as well? Any advice for someone whose first information search outside the US this will be? Thank you.

1790-1800 was a soldier in a scottish regiment. Became a cook in the governors house. Married a spanish lady and went to La Linea had a son Joseph gaskin who was a boatman on the birth of his son also Joseph gaskin. This last Joseph Gaskin married my grandmother and they both resided in gibraltar near the Moorish Castle. Any information much appreciated. ie where was he married , where did he come from in scotland, which regiment was he in where is he buried.

Arthur Frederick Holmes was my great grandfather I know he was born in Gibraltar on 17th June 1899. He married my great grandmother Mercedes Carrara in Gib on 29th December 1930 and had a son also in Gib (my grandfather) Alfredo Holmes on 1st February 1931. However, Arthur had married once before having five children and once after having another five children. What I don't know is Arthur's death date.

Still no news on John Marstons buriel place, I tried writing to Mr Alfred Ryan at Gibraltar cemetry some ten months ago but he did not reply. I have also tried a phone call but no answer. Could any one tell me if the cemetry still exists or even Mr Ryan. The cemetry is supposed to be in Devils Tower road.`John Marston lived in Dagunin Buildings,Rosia before his death.

Death of Richard Pike

I'm trying to find some information about a Richard Pike was was apparently buried on Gibraltar. What I'm told is that he was a seaman, aged 29, who died of a stroke. He was most likely born at Carbonear, Newfoundland in 1892.

I have found a Sarah Grace in my family who says on the 1861 census in London UK that she was born in 1815 in Gibraltar.
Is there anyone reading this who may have come across the Grace family in Gibraltar about this time? and/or does anyone know where I can find out more about them?
I have checked the military records in the Family Record Office in London but she does not appear in them..maybe a civil family perhaps?

I am searching for information reguarding ANA Suarez. She is my Great- Grandmother. She had a two sisters named Delores and Aurora. I believe Delores was her twin. She also a brother but we do not know his name.
She married Charles Tapp, and had 3 children. Her Parents were Jose' and Rita Suarez. I can get no further in my research. Ana and her twin were born in 1853, so far as we can undersand. When Ana died in 1919 in England , (within about 3 days?weeks?) the relatives had to within a short time travel to Gibraltar and also bury her Twin Delores.
The info above is the only and last info we have reguarding our family. Can anyone possibly link to this information? If not please tell me where I can turn for help.

On his fathers tombstone in Mevagissey it says Also of John beloved son of Robert t Barron and Hester Barron----John died at Gibralter September 29th 1895 aged 23.

I am searching for anyone with any information on WILLIAM KENNEFORD, KENNIFORD, KANEFORD, KENEFORD who was born in Gibraltar around 1806 (roughly). His parents may or may not have originlly come from Lancashire or possibly Pembrokehsire. He married Barabary Thompson in Lancashire (perhaps during the 1830s) but seems to have had a previous wife (whose name I don't know at the moment) who would have been the father of Joseph K born 1825 and Doctor K 1827.

William is listed as BRITISH SUBJECT on one of the Censuses. We know that at one time he was an engineer, but he seems to have spent most of his working life as a coalminer. Interested in hearing from anyone who has made any progress in researching people born Gibraltar around the same time.

William Forbes was born in Scotland about 1858, and married in Gibraltar 15th June 1881. He had two sons John Joseph and William Kenneth. He died before 1903, and I'd very much appreciate help to find his death. He was a private in the 19th Regiment, stationed at South Bks. at the time of his marriage. I don't know whether he died in Gibraltar, or possibly during military service abroad.

I am trying to find the marriage details of my GT,GT. Grandfather Richard Walton, he was a sergeant with the 1st. battalion 25th. Regiment of Foot. stationed in Gibraltar. He is believed to have married a Margaret Perez born 1837, in either Gibraltar or in Spain close to it's border with Gib.They were supposed to have been married in Gibraltar, the date I do not know. I cannot find anything either military or civil to say they got married. Their first child Mary Josepha Walton was born in Gibraltar in 1862. I would greatly appreciate any kind of help as I have been stuck on this problem for months. Thank you.

I am researching Thomas Edward Garrett Barnes (b1843). Parents were Rose Smith Barnes (police officer) and Sarah Ann ????

Rose Smith Barnes was also married to Huldah Bishop as he has a first child to her in 1848.

Thomas married Elizabeth Medlicott in 1872 and then after she died in 1890, married her sister Hannah. Thomas had 20 children in total!!! No wonder his first wife died, probably exhaustion.

Also have an interest in 1st Foot and 88th Regiment (Connaught Rangers). If anyone knows how I can go about researching police records for Rose Smith Barnes I would be really appreciative. With a first name of Rose, I figure he would be pretty easy to find!

If anyone has any links to the above, I would love to share info. I feel sure that with this many children, there must be others searching the same family.

I don't need a large amount of research done as I have exact dates.
I am interested in a James Dust who was in the 46th reg. of Foot. James bought his way out of the regiment for ten pounds and must have made his own way back to England 1841. I am sure his family was with him plus other family members.
I would like someone to see if there are any passinger lists in Gibraltar that would show our James Dust and others leaving Gibraltar at this time.

I'm trying to find out if Polinea b1853, Margaret b1874 & Ada b1874 are part of my Mead/Gonzales/Hodge/Smith section of my tree.

I found a Polinea & Margaret living with a James Mead (b1845) on the 1881 census in Portsmouth. in the 1891 census there is no sign of Polinea or James, but a Margret Mead Shows as living as a step-daughter of another family & I find an Ada L. mead in a soldiers daughters home (Rosslyn Hill)

I think Ada L. Mead (from Gib) might be Ida Louisa Mead. Ida's mother was Spanish/Gib & her father an Irish soldier - possibly called Arthur & there maybe an Isabella Gonzales too, somewhere (what my dad told me) they lived in Portsmouth.

Ida Louisa Mead went on to marry Harry Hodge (b1881) -Portsmouth (m1907) he took some photo's of her (and my grandfather) before he left to join RAN (Australian Royal Navy)

BTW: Polinea the name, I think it means "flower" or "nectar" from the Spanish botanical term "Polinea" which means the mass or area where pollen collects - may even be a sort of "nick name" - like the Devonshire person might say "alright, my flower / my petal" when greeting a woman.

Lotties Bar, Engineers Lane Gibraltar

I recently returned to Gibraltar after a gap of 25 years, obviously many changes have taken place. I used to work for Lottie Roberts at Lotties bar and also Lotties Bier Keller. I discovered that Lottie had died some 17 years previously, I tried to find Lotties grave at North Front but alas I had no luck.
I am returning again the first week in may 2003 to try again.
If anyone has any information regarding Lottie or her bars and how she met her end it would be much appreciated. Is there anyone out there that also worked for Lottie and possibly worked with me during 1977-78. (I was Royal Navy then working at Windmill Hill Signal Station and was known as Joe Fraser)

My great grandmother, Euphrosyne Federico, was born in Gibraltar 1853 or 54. She married William Barrie (a soldier with the Highland Light Infantry - 71st Highlanders) Nd their eldest child, Arthur P. Barrie was born in Malta 1874 or 5.
I'm a descendant of Hilda Barrie, their youngest child.
I'd love to hear from any Gibralete relatives I may have.

There was a family connection to Gibraltar that is unclear – possibly military. The impression that I have from family members was at one point some part of Gibraltar was owned by a relative. I wish that I knew more of any connections between WHITWORTH family and Gibraltar. James Whitworth was born about 1804 and employed in 1855 as a "sexton of St. James in Heywood" in Heywood, Lancashire, England. This family is also involved in running a cotton/textile manufacturing operation.
James' wife Mary was born in GIBRALTAR in or around 1806. I know nothing about her but it seems that her family is likely the key to the mystery. I don't have their marriage or birth/baptismal records, civil records in England start in 1837. I know that their son, James was born in Heywood, Lancashire, England in 1833 so presumably they had left Gibraltar by then. I have an unidentified photo of a soldier that may be James' grandson John. Any help with any of this would be appreciated.

I am researching my Gibraltarian/English roots. My great grandfather, who was Englishman and stationed in Gibraltar around 1911 while serving in the British army. He married a Lala Balestrino in 1911 at Europa Barracks. He then went on to work as a dockyard policeman in 1914. His son Albert Harry Bishop my grandfather joined the British army too and served during the 2nd WW.
He married a Lourdes Adamberry in 1935 they had six children. They were all evacuated to Ireland during the war. If anybody has any info on the above people or any ideas on how I can located information about them in Gib

William Glanville and Sophia Kellam (nee Gomez) are my wife's GG Grandparents. William was in British army as was Mr Kellam. William and Sophia moved to Cork in Ireland sometime before 1851 when they came to Toodyay in Western Australia on the convict ship Pyrenees. William was a warder on the ship and continued in this role at Toodyay prison. Does anyone know where I can find the records for 'dockings' and 'sailings' of ships to and from Gibraltar from December 1943 to February 1944. I am trying to trace information on my father and an American airman who reached Gibraltar via a ship carrying oranges from Seville to Gibraltar. This was the final leg of their escape through Belgium, France and Spain, following their 2 respective aircraft being shot down.

His father was a drum major.I cannot find a birth entry for Charles or a marriage entry for his parents either so am totaly stuck! I do know from WILLIAM WALKER's attestation papers that he served a total of 4 years and 5 months on Gibraltar/ Crimean War.
